Description This is a little something that I did for Kizer's !!DRAW YOUR FAV CHARACTERs DOME!!! journal entry.
[link]

My favorite character at the moment is Guts from Berserk. This is such a great story and it's very compelling. The characters are well thought out and make you care whether they live or die. Very gory and quite sad. To be honest I'm not quite sure what to expect from this series as it is right now things look quite bad for the main character Guts who doesn't seem to have a chance against the powers that be(namely grifith)...

Plus there are a lot questions on why things happened the way they did. and what to expect once Casca, guts' love interest, regains her sane mind. Will it even happen, should it even happen? Considering what has transpired... It's very questionable.

Also this is the first story where I truly hate the villian of the story. I've never hated an evil villian character quite as much as I do Grifith. There's a lot of pondering as to his thoughts as well. Did he ever really love Casca? Was loving Casca something that would have betrayed his dream? Did he ever really consider Gats a friend? Etc etc.

I could go on...

There were actually times in the manga where he broke down quite a bit. Like during the beginning of the series where He was walking away at the end of the present storyline probably pondering the futility of what he's trying to do after confronting Grifith again and as well leaving the girl as she was with revenge on the brain, also when he talked with Casca about his past. Another one being when he rescued Grifith and still cared about what a mess he'd become.

But yeah, this was a somber sad mood, I mean this guy has a right to feel depressed a bit... Seriously.

i can't believe i forgot to add this to my favourites! and i saw it many times when i was scouring DA for berserk fanart :3. oh well better late then never XD

btw- i agree on your sentiment on Griffith to a certain extent. He is not one of the villains i hate though (i think the only characters i ever hated was sasuke from naruto, and light from deathnote). But I dislike griffith less because of watching the golden age arc again on the web. I loathed him completely the first time around though- giving it a second read may bring a different perspective of the story to ya!

Well I think my anger with the character was strong mainly because I watched the anime first, and thought the series ended so abruptly when everything was going wrong that I hated Grifith even more so because I really wanted the story to continue. So it probably just boiled over because of that. But of course I find out later that the story was indeed continuing, as I saw that the manga did indeed continued the story. But yeah I don't think anyone hated Grifith when the story was first starting out, maybe those that read the manga first sure. but watching the anime, Kinda hid what he had done way better then the manga. The manga illustrates their relation a bit more, and So I think it's much better to be in the dark about them both like the anime did.

Just my opinion on that, plus no puck.

redchinese In reply to danimation2001 [2010-03-29 07:46:31 +0000 UTC]

to be honest - I almost forgot about puck hehe, at least while watching the anime i didn't mind since i knew that the anime would only focus on the golden age arc.
But i think you are right that people who read the manga first will more likely hate him: I am one of them.

It was just that after watching the anime I felt I understood him better as a person. Watching the show/reading the story becomes less of a drive to find out what happens next on the second time round. For me i got the chance to actually think more about the story and the characters. Anyways enough rambelling on my part. One of the reason i dislike Griffith less now is because it took me a while to realize how much griffith was at the center of the story and how much he influenced guts character in the positive way, not just the negative way.

And also thanks, since this deviation prompted so many comments about the series as a result. I have been reading since I first came across this manga when I was stationed in korea even though I couldnt read the writing I was drawn in by the art and the conflict that it showed. Since then I have read almost all the published mangas played all the games, and seen the anime. I have enjoyed the constant struggle which Guts has endured to become who he is. From his brith beneath his mothers hanging body to his killing of Gambino(sick bastard) and his eventual life as a member of the band of the hawk. It has shown him to be someone striving for purpose in his life. Which he finds in Casca even though that is stolen from him even his child that was crouppted in Casca's womb. It saved Guts life even though he still does not know the whole truth as the Skull Knight has called him part of a cycle he will strive to break that cycle and save his friends. I started rambiling.lOl

berserk's the best! they need to continue the anime or at least make a next-gen game...but Susumu Hirasawa needs to be involved in the process

Guts is such a cool character but you cant help but see Griffiths side as well, he was just spitting game to this princess chick and Guts/Caska overheard him and just gave thought to what they were actually doing with their lives and what their priorities where, Guts decided to go solo and get on Griffiths level so he can be his friend (as i vaguely remember the speech Griffith game outside, haven't watched my dvds in a couple of years). After the second fight between them, when Guts finally beat him, Griffiths spirit was broken and for the first time he was not in control, it made him loose faith (involving the Behelith in the process) and he felt betrayed. And of course the torturing, the agonizing, long term torturing...that just did him in. I love both characters just the same, in their own respect. Very emotional series, i get goosebumps, excited almost every time the series is mentioned.

Great image btw sorry to rant

danimation2001 In reply to remark666 [2009-01-16 23:01:37 +0000 UTC]

It's ok to rant, I love rants

You know it's my belief that his dream ended the moment that he was defeated and lost his friend. Think of it, he never had a friend before he met Guts, A friend to him would have to be someone on equal par with him, maybe Griffith already thought of him as such. I mean guts was the only one who ever saw his ugly side and was the only one he trusted to work with on doing such things. Plus yeah he felt betrayed. There are still so many questions that need to be answered for in the series.

Also it's my belief that Griffith will do the unthinkable again and sacrifice all his new allies just to be reborn again once he perhaps gets defeated by Guts, I don't know if you've read the manga, but the first chapter story that wasn't in the anime kinda foreshadows this, one of the apostles is about to die and they give him a chance to come back just like before when he sacrificed his wife, he must now then choose to sacrifice his daughter and he would be reborn again. Griffith now would be sacrificing The princess, his new human comrades maybe even the apostles themselves as well. Just so his dream wont die. Meanwhile It's my feeling that Guts will never sacrifice his friends even when it comes down to him dying, that's the difference between him and Griffith, he wont sacrifice his friends for his dreams, only himself. It's been said in the series that he gambles with his life on the line all the time.

I am not sure if Gutts will be able to defeat(or even kill) Griffith in his current state as of now, well not until we see what the witches(or wizards) that live live in Skellig can do.

I would be amused, terrified, heart broken and eventually will cry if ever a crimson Behelit came upon Gutts to fullfill his wish to get revenge on Griffith. I mean, there are internet rumors that there is already 6 incarnation of sin also known as the God hand existing. But of course, they are still rumors.

Brain dude = Pride
- cape and all, and being pride as the chief sin and since he seems to be the leader.

Flying shade dude = Sloth
- Flies around, etc etc

Beautiful naked gal = Lust
- Oh my... Just look at her

Fat round dude = Gluttony
- Fat, mouth open, appears to be

Femto(Griffith) = Envy
- His determination to be no. 1 and the way he stares at Guts and Caska before the feast(when he is already crippled) appears to be a large factor why he is envy.

Skull Knight = Greed
- Rumors that a kingdom is beneath Windham and that a feast occurred there. Appears not be likely though.

Gutts = Wrath
- If ever a crimson Behelith has been given to him. A terrifying avatar of fury, terror, anger, hate, violence, contempt and rage will be spawned that will doom us all.

Not sure but still I hope it do not end in this terrifying theory. More power and good health for Gutts and for the author Kentaro Miura. Thats all.

danimation2001 In reply to ishkampoddle [2009-05-11 18:42:56 +0000 UTC]

I have a theory and it's been for shadowed throughout the story. Grifith will lose again to gutts some how some way. And again he'll sacrifice those closest to him in order to stay alive. One of the main reasons for these apostles becoming who they are is because of one major theme really if you look at right. They all have been betrayed by those they loved. and in a moment of weakness or what have you they didn't care whether they sacrificed them.

Of course this is just theory, but I'd like to think that everything is being foreshadowed as such.

and good points on the note of seeing the skull knight as greed, I mean he does have a hint of it being that he's been collecting a ton of Beheliths, hording is a sign of greed. And yeah Femto if anything is envy, definitely from the way he was looking at them with his eyes he was definitely feeling that. I mean he says that only a friend can be his equal, but what of someone that is better then him, his enemy? it would make sense anyone trying to be better then him would be his enemy and not his friend, for only his friend can being those on the same level as him no higher no lower.

Also haven't you noticed it yet, but Gutts is massing up quite the allies around him, he not only has a couple of friends but some what of a naval strength as well and apparently a good one. He's building himself an army with out even realizing it.

Also side note, I plan to create a piece down the road of Gutts in his god hand mode, I seriously doubt that he would ever take the road that Grifith has gone down, but it is a road to take none the less that will be there for him and most likely when he will be at his weakest will it be there like it was for Grifith.

In order for Gutts to become a God Hand he would have to give up what he cares about most. So Caska is the most likely candidate. I don't see that happening. What I do see happening, he accidentally kills Caska while fighting Griffith or Femto. Like she regains her sanity but only remembers everything before the feast so she is still loyal to Griffith and thus willing to give her life to protect him.

Now that would call for one might Wrath.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

danimation2001 In reply to Riixie [2009-08-25 18:10:01 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I don't see it happening but it is going to be thrown at him no doubt.

as for Casca's memory

I don't know, I think she'd have her memory and still even after still knowing what Grifith did to her in front of Gutts, she's still going to not want Gutts to fight Grifith and just let him be. Not because she's loyal to Grifith, more like out of guilt or shame, remember if it was not for her knowing his dream and doing everything for Him to get to his goal for him, she'd have no doubt have fallen in love with him and been with him no doubt, but his dream and way of attaining that dream hindered on him not having a relationship with Casca. She knows that and stood by the way side even still. That's why she may feel guilty about what he did, because damned be it all if she didn't want to do that with Grifith from the start. So she might feel guilty for wanting it but completely ashamed for how it came about.

It was already hinted that it was going to be that way or at least not the way Gutts would want to go about it because of what the Skull knight said. That Gutt's wish may not be what she wishes.

She's going to have to face what happened and deal with it with Gutts. That's the whole reason she went insane, her mind did that because she ultimately couldn't deal with it. So her mind coped with it by going insane. I believe that's one way that the mind works, if something is to traumatic it's blocked out, in her case she went completely blank... I kinda actually don't know if her getting her mind back is actually a good thing... but oh well. We'll see... in about 10 more years...

Riixie In reply to danimation2001 [2009-08-26 13:45:19 +0000 UTC]

Something I completely forgot about when I wrote about Caska being accidentally killed by Gutts. She can't be a sacrifice for Gutts, b/c she's already a Sacrifice for Griffith. So I guess it would have to be someone else : / Farnese maybe?

Usually the sacrifice(s) betrays the Ascendee some how. (Caska and Gutts decided to leave Griffith) And I can see Farnese betraying Gutts with how floppy her emotions are and un-confident she is. Especially considering she is developing romantic feelings for him and may or may not realize he loves the retard (as seen from the not so fully disclosed conversation on the boat).

@.@ yeah I know, I wish Muira would publish on a steadier basis. But I guess you can't rush genius.

I remember, back in my shallow "that anime character is hot" days, I thought Guts had a really boring design. Like, how freaking basic could you get? And a big sword? been there, done that.

Years later after I've wizened, it turns out Guts was pretty much the inspiration for the big-sword deal for those OTHER guys. Ontop of that, after reading the manga, I've come to realize he's quite possibly the sexiest male character, unintentionally I'd say he hits all the right turn-on keys that would appeal to women, (alpha male, protective, one-woman man, handsome, vulnerable... um, giant f*cking sword? lol)

By the way, I love that Casca isn't the typical blonde girly heroine of the story... too bad by now she's been disabled longer than she's been lucid. We'll just have to be patient to see how that pans out.

Oh yeah, and awesome picture. Glad such a beastly artist is a fan.

most of the things you mentioned above are also the reason why I Berserk is my most faved mangga of all time.

Guts, beneath the ferocity, fury, aggressiveness and monstrous strength lies a superb, deep, cunning and morally good character. I can rarely see a male anime character that will compare to what this normal human have endured and have faced with such limited resources to meet the dreaded future that fate will throw at him.

I can confidently tell many people, most anime male characters, if they ever be in his condition will have their will crushed and their resolved be dissolved to dust. But he did not go and cry, whine or just wished to die in a corner after all the evil things that had happen in his life, instead he stands up and take it as a man and answered it with hate, rage, determination and with the sword. He has the Gutts to fight back even when the odds are impossibly against him. What makes him so bad-ass is the fact that with all of the shit that life throws him, he responds back and he responds back not as a "cool guy", or giving out quotes or being a stereotype or waits for help no... He responds back as a human.

TL;DR: This is an epic story of something so incredible that my little introduction does nothing for it. Damn that Miura guy really does this well.

Spread the rage!

Though I've come to wonder if bringing Casca back to normal is the best thing, given that her mind went into that state because of all the trauma. But being the type that guts is who practically faces anything, he'd want her to endure and be strong as well. But I guess we'll see.

Love how you made the goblin armor look! Regarding the story of Beserk, I originally saw the Anime back in the late 90's in high school and I've been hooked ever since. It just shows how epic this story is on so many levels that true fans can start having philosophical debates on it the minute the story is brought up.

But anyway, I'm waiting for Guts and the crew to get to the Fairy King's island were Casca could possibly be healed. And who knows, Guts may receive something that could aid him in the fight against Griffith. But on the flipside, the Skull Knight has already mentioned that Guts' fate will end up like his own, so Guts sacrificing himself for the greater good is definitely on the table.

I'd just like to see him happy, at least one more time before the end.

Always loved your work, including that pic I won from you way back of Roberto. And you just get better, and always with my fave characters..damn, son.

Guts is mah boi, though. Best character, best manga. Definitely.

And Griffith did what he did at the eclipse not 'cause of any feelings towards Casca (beyond a certain possesiveness he clearly felt about all his officers), but just to hurt Guts as much as he could. He tried to reclaim possesion of her, sort of, in that wagon right before the eclipse - the failure to do so, his powerlessness, really is to me what finished pushing him over the edge.

Anyway, TLR I like your picture and agree that Guts is the man.

danimation2001 In reply to ruphia [2008-06-25 13:20:30 +0000 UTC]

Well I actually had a feeling that maybe all along he really wanted to love her, but couldn't because it would have betrayed his dream. I think he said it himself that he wouldn't betray his dream. Maybe he wanted to all along to be with her but couldn't because he needed to marry someone of high status, namely the princess. Marrying a common soldier girl or even loving one would greatly hinder his dream. Plus he did say that both Guts and Casca at one point in the story were both valuable to him.

There's a lot to think about Plus he's never explained his actions. Other then he will not betray his dream and that he does what he wants. Other then that it's really still not explained well. And damn well needs to be explained. If not he's in need of a beating from Guts, that's for damn sure. Regardless.
