Description I think I'm done! I was going to add some more wildlife (lizard, snake, bird, etc) but my eyes are buuuurning! I've worked so hard on this! Gah! I know it isn't perfect, but it was definitely a trial for my amateur skills.

Print coming soon so I can buy one for my son's room.

Close up of dino and merboy can be seen here: [link]

RESOURCES:
*Some textures and waterfall from sxc.hu (restriction free) Original waterfall picture can be seen here [link]
*Dinosaur, balcony, and some vines were originally rendered in Poser 5 (though it was just a base - MUCH painting and texturing done post-render) You can see the original dino render here [link]
*My own reference photo for the merboy can be seen here [link]

idk if you noticed, but the waterfall looks like a guy with angel wings, I just thought that was cool.

β€œThe attitude is we live and let live. This is actually an amazing change in values in a rather short time and it's an example of freedom from religion.”
β€œThe modern picture of the artist began to form: The poor, but free spirit, plebeian but aspiring only to be classless, to cut himself forever free from the bonds
of the greedy bourgeoisie, to be whatever the fat burghers feared most, to cross the line wherever they drew it, to look at the world in a way they couldn't see,
to be high, live low, stay young forever -- in short, to be the bohemian.” Thomas Wolfe

This is my favorite of all the things I've ever made. My son loves it, thinks he's some kind of famous celebrity now because he's featured in this. I now have the task of making equally creative artworks for my two daughters. I'm much better at scaly dinos and green boys than I am at flowers and sparkles, but I'm going to have to give it a try. The things I do for my kids...

sorry for being so late -once again-

you're really talented!! What a wonderful composition. The reflections created by the water, for example, are absolutely stunning. And the dino is so "real"... the whole work is full of small details that make it being really complete. Great work!!!!!!

This piece is excellent! You have a strong sense of composition, and your textures are gorgeous. You really know how to convey a mystical mood.

When I first saw the thumb, my first notion was "Oh my god, the dinosaur is going to eat the little boy!". But when I took a closer look, I immediately noticed that the boy appeared unafraid of the creature. Is there a story to go with the merboy and his dinosaur friend? Please share with me where you got your inspiration ^_^

Kudos on this.

DaniMyrick In reply to femme-digitale [2006-03-11 22:14:08 +0000 UTC]

My son was actually the inspiration for this. I made the wall first, then added the vines and the waterfall. I struggled with how to finish it. I posted the WIP in my journal asking for some advice and got some great suggestions. Though I didn't use any specific one, it did get me thinking. My son agreed to model for me (I can't paint people otherwise ). I wanted something lurking out in the misty jungle, and the T. rex was the natural choice since dinosaurs are one of his great loves. I wanted to leave it a bit ambiguous as to what exactly is happening. Are they longtime friends, or is this their first meeting? Is the little merboy just being foolish and is going to get chomped, or has he called the T. rex and has it under his control? It is up to the viewer to decide.

I will be making similar pieces for my two daughters that will hopefully also have a reception. Thanks so much for your comments.

I am amazed by this. The brilliant storybook feel to the concept and the way you've presented this is just wow. I love the feeling this gives and the webeed fingers of the little boy!! You are very, very talented.

May I suggest one thing? The dino's head looks like it's coming from out of nowhere, the rest of his body should be on the other side of that pillar.

Please do let me know when this is available for print! I would love a copy.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DaniMyrick In reply to thedaemonspawn [2006-03-04 17:42:32 +0000 UTC]

I've had comments on the disembodied dino head before. I had hoped it looked better in this version (the first version was even worse ). His body is actually on the other side of the pillar. It just blends too well into the brown behind him for you to see well. I uploaded an extreme close up of the dino and body so you can see what I mean. [link]

Thank you for the kind comments. I really love the feel of this piece, what you call a 'storybook feel'. I'm hoping to be able to continue making works with the same feeling. I think I've finally hit my stride.

I will have prints available soon. My original files were corrupted in the transfer and dA requested that I upload them via FTP, which I know nothing about. I'm currently in the process of setting that up right now! It would be awesome for someone besides my own family to buy a print.

Thanks so much for giving me the link to the detail! I was thinking as I was looking at the whole piece, omg, I hope this person doesn't have to go back and redo a whole chunk of this gorgeous piece.

You're so very welcome, and I can't wait till the print is available of this! I so love images like this, that tell a story, and wisk me off into a world of fantasy. They're so inspiring, a breath of fresh air in the art world, they make me feel so good. You're so very talented at making these kinds of pieces, and I'm going to add you to my watch to hopefully see more!

My goodness, Dani, this is awesome!
I really like how you enhanced the dinosaur - it really wasn't up to snuff until you did your post-work on it. But you've made it very realistic!
You have just the right amount of light and mist in the background, and the moss on the bricks really complements the green of the merboy (who
came out great, as well!)

I honestly can't tell you what I'd change in this - it's perfect the way it is!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DaniMyrick In reply to RetroZombie [2006-03-02 01:12:35 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

On the dinosaur, I cut and pasted tons of swatches of lizard skin from some stock photos from sxc.hu and tediously stitched them over the render. I also used a second layer of the render set to overlay to blend over the patched together textures. After that, I touched up, painted, and cloned until it looked right. Oh, and I also ran a plastic wrap filter over the scales at a very low setting to make them kinda shiny. It took me most of one evening on the dinosaur. I just couldn't leave him alone! I was thrilled with the results though. *pets the pretty T. rex*

Heh...when I originally read your post, I thought you said "I really would like to know how you enhanced the dinosaur" so that is why you got that huge explanation.

RetroZombie In reply to DaniMyrick [2006-03-02 04:41:15 +0000 UTC]

that's ok - I'm glad you wrote the description, it was quite interesting! All the work you put into it sure paid off - you got an amazingly realistic effect! Using the plastic wrap filter for the sheen was clever, too.
