Description
Doing mocks for the first version of AppCenter. That means the feature set needs to stay simple. No reviews or anything crazy yet. Just what data we get from a regular debian repository (plus screenshots).I want to have some nice looking banners to spice things up a bit, but we don't have the resources to go design a ton and we won't have the bandwidth to host them. So, the idea here is to automatically generate a nice color scheme based on the icon's colors and created banners based on a few different layout templates.
Also, in the category grid, it should dynamically resize. So if you have an ultra-wide window, it can go to 3, 4, etc columns. But if you have an ultra small window, it should shrink back to just 1 (a list basically).

The concept here was to generate banners in code using a few templates and a color scheme generating algorithm. We don't really have to resources to maintain banners for 3rd party developers and large images take up extra space on our servers.

Ah, I am following now. That indeed would cause a large server load. For such a task you would need a heck of a server and possibly a MPLS in place. Good luck to you

Looks great!
It's a bit difficult to tell which ones are local apps and which are web apps, though. Maybe that could be improved.

There shouldn't be any web apps. Only native apps.

Ok, so Facebook, Twitter or Gmail are out of place there?

Or maybe they have native apps like they do on iOS and Android

Or are counting "desktopified" web apps like GWoffice as native apps?

GWoffice is very much a native app; it has a lot of plumbing in there for tabs and Granite stuff and account management. It _does_ use a webview for the editor, but it's actually a native, compiled Vala app.

Interesting update. I specially like the icon/banner idea.
Regarding taxonomy, I do feel that there could be other ways for a person to find the application they want, perhaps through the use of tags (I'm thinking of David Weinberg's book here).
I'd be interested to see how the other screens would pan out, as the navigation is not complete here. Are you thinking akin to Google Play for the categories?

What do you think about a 'featured apps' section on the front page showing GUI applications depending on granite (omitting the packages needed for development)? Otherwise it might be a bit hard to find (3rd party) elementary apps, once they're available in the ubuntu repos.

Oh man, you're a freaking genius. That's a brilliant way to find elementary apps.

(referring to the updated version) won't the application initially have a way to browse applications by category? You said "So if you have an ultra-wide window, it can go to 3, 4, etc columns", will it have a limit on how many columns it will adapt to? If you have a really large display, e.g. retina, and you have 8-10 columns it will be practically impossible to scan the list for what might interest you. I suggest that you have a limit on 3 columns and have the view centered in the window (like websites usually are). Then you can use those constraints to make a proportional and well designed view.
I guess that when you search you will get applications in a single column list like slingshot displays it?

hmm the icon placement in the banner looks odd :/
Mght be because it's looking inset, but if ywe use a outset look it looks like a button .... Maybe a flat look with the banner being from left to right and maybe a slideshow?

How about a 'Launch' button when the app is installed?

CassidyJames In reply to DanRabbit [2013-02-03 20:09:33 +0000 UTC]
I don't think the icon is entirely obvious. I wouldn't know that clicking it once it's installed makes it launch, when clicking it before it's installed doesn't do anything (or brings me to its app page if I'm somewhere else in the store).

Would AppCenter be a frontend for APT? If there is still going to be a package manager, I think it might be more user-friendly to bypass APT for most operations and just use DPKG and read the repos directly. If there isn't going to be a separate package manager, maybe a switch for "APT mode" could be devised.

I'm not 100% sure whether it would be a frontend to apt-daemon or package kit or what. That would be for an engineer to decide

I admire your work! Hope to see this in luna soon. Have you considered the idea of opening the preview photos in a lightbox-style window? Opening a new window inside an other and having to click the "x" icon to close it is what i consider bad design.
