Very cool.

I am loving this all in one titlebar/menubar that I'm seeing in newer Elementary designs. Is this intended for implementation? If so, how is this likely to be achieved?

Yes it is. We're just waiting on upstream GTK+. There is already work being done on client-side-decorations (having the app draw its own titlebar instead of the window manager) for Wayland support. So as soon as that makes its way into a stable release of GTK+, we can start moving out apps over to a more condensed design

Oh my. Fantastic stuff! Will they be functional regardless of the window manager then? Will other window managers, such as Compiz and Mutter, need to add some kind of exception to prevent them trying to draw a window decoration onto them or will GTK draw the app decorations in a similar manner to Google Chrome and Steam?

I'm looking forward to seeing how your designs evolve for the core elementary apps with the ability to streamline the titlebar like this.

Yes it should work regardless of window manager.

Yep, you're spot on. Apps can already tell the window manager not to draw decorations. So we'll hand that responsibility to the toolkit instead of the window manager, and in the process we'll be able to now add items to the window title
