Description
EDIT: I painted over his nose because it bothered me for years. ._. (3-10-15)My shark man/merman character “Delmar”. Yeah, you may have known him as “Aiji” but I didn’t like that name anymore since it was from my first few months of studying Japanese.
I used SAI and several references. I’m nervous about the quality of the coloring…
Plus it took over 12 friggin' hours! XD

Thank you! Yeah, I really didn't put that painting out too much. It's been about three years. I guess I was pretty nervous about the result and tried to hide it. Now I am a little happier about it since I fixed up the nose so I made sure to update this time. ^^

I find stuff on my drawings sometimes years later and then it's like *eye-twitch...eye-twitch* I could fix that, but....I haven't tried it yet, but maybe I'll just bite the bullet.

Okay, I'll comment on the colour one since it's something I do myself and I like some of the same artists that you do who do this type of work. For me you've stopped too early on this piece and needed to work the details up more. More stranding in the hair, particularly in the fringe close to the face. Work the hands up a little more and the fins on his legs plus perhaps a few scales at the human skin, fish skin interface. You'll be surprised at how just working up small areas of detail gives your painting depth and makes it look finished. I really like your colour choices in this picture. Don't worry about the time it takes to do a painting if it's for yourself. Working on a commission is another story as you want to work fast to earn more. Hope this helps for your next painting

Hey, thank you very much for this critique! I appreciate it! I understand what you mean. I'm just an impatient person but what you said does make a lot of sense. Something did feel a bit off. I mean, I was never good at digital art anyway and because I never bothered with the software due to time (and concentration) constraints, I don't really know what to expect from personal experience compared to when I draw on paper because I'm more used to that. Hopefully, I can get better at digital soon. I'm glad that you could point out these things for me. ^^
I never submit to critique groups (or good quality groups) because I get nervous about the quality of the critique and I am very thankful to have fellow artists like you who can point out these things without making me feel bad. "Feeling bad" isn't about the critique, however. It's about how I get angry with myself if I ask for the evaluation at the wrong time because I could have better prepared for it myself or when the critique seems like a "good riddance, don't come back" message. lol But yeah, thanks a lot and this was really helpful information. I shall try these techniques out sometime.

This is beautiful, truly! The shading is breathtaking, the wispy stroke effects in the hair are breathtaking, and even with the almost dreamy fuzziness you don't lose any of the detail in the anatomy. You can clearly tell where all of his body parts are and even though they aren't crisp, they're still very appealing to look at. 10/10 on this piece from me.

Sad that I didn't stay till the end but looks freaking amazing. I was hoping you would of went a bit of a different route with the hair. I love the colors and the coloring looks great a few iffy lines but otherwise I love this more than the original design.
