The last versions of Photoshop are better to work with, but if you're gonna change, it's better to try out CS5.

Do you use references for the figures? How did you learn anatomy?

Regards

dark-spider In reply to JoseArtist [2010-07-15 21:02:45 +0000 UTC]

I use references when needed, usually from live models. I learn anatomy studying from books and at school, and of course practising a lot

Any special anatomy book to recommend?

Thanks a lot

Try reading books from Andrew Loomis or Burne Hogarth. Their books are common references for painters.

As an illustration student, I wanted to thank you posting this, it really helps me see the various ways of doing things digitally, which in the stage of my learning process is very important, since I haven't quite found "my medium" yet so to speak, and I have the most trouble with taking my drawings and adding color/shading. ^_^

Once again, I love your work, and thanks so much for offering us a look inside your head!<3

Okay. firstly your work is very beautiful. You should be very proud of what you accomplish. I have a question though. I have difficulty putting such detail into my artwork, so i'm curious as to what sizing you tend to work with. Your close ups are wonderfully detailed, your files must be huge! =]

(Sorry for the late answer ^^)
Indeed, my files are very huge . I usually work with 50x70 cm at 300 of resolution.

this is interesting to see, but doesn't really help as a tutorial. your technique is too complicated to follow, the jump from pic no.1 to 2 was already too much. it would be more helpful if you described EXACTLY what brushes you used, what size, etc. so that people who are inexperienced can follow along.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dark-spider In reply to desertflame [2009-03-18 14:19:29 +0000 UTC]

Well, I didn't say this is a tutorial, but a step by step. Here I show how I do an artwork, since a lot of people have curiosity about my progress in a painting. I'm not a master but an illustrator, so I'm not trying to teach anything; if this step by step can help somebody to improve, that's a bonus .

Of course it's complicated, it's not for inexperienced ones since the picture cannot be done by a begginer. It took me ten years of daily work to be able to do that, don't expect somebody can do the same at first try . By the way, don't lie yourself: a tutorial can help to improve but it can't teach you how to paint, for that you will have to work yourself.

About what you sugest, I don't think you will find that helpful. If I explain exactly what I do it will be more difficult to follow and totally bored. Because I just paint. I took a brush and paint. That's it. It doesn't matter the sizes or the kind of brushes, this work can be done with only a custom brush and the result will be the same. Differente brushes are only to be quicker and only if you're an experienced artists, but are not the key in any way .

desertflame In reply to dark-spider [2009-03-31 01:49:36 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I disagree that describing exactly what settings to use etc. would be useless and boring, because once people know how one person does it they can always play around and adapt it to their own technique. Imitation is easier than straight experimentation, you know? But I do understand where you're coming from, and for a step-by-step this is actually quite neat. So thanks for putting it together.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dark-spider In reply to desertflame [2009-04-10 14:39:09 +0000 UTC]

That's ok . Of course it could be useful to know the techniques, but when I said that it could be really boring it's because for me it's a constant of taking the same brush and do strokes, there's no more mystery . Most of people seems to think that you do some "miracoulus trick" and then the painting appears (no kidding, they say me exactly that dozens of times! ^^). What I show here it's what I do exactly, there's no more than repeat and repeat the same things .

Hellooo Dark-Spider! ^^ I'm a big fan of your art and I saw your step by step. I draw with a tablet with Corel Painter X that I love but I have a problem... I drew a lot of faces with references and I have images in my minds that I want to draw and I can't draw them T_T I'm sad because I would like to draw things from my dreams. Because I remember my dreams. I know it's really hard to draw without reference but I'm very lost and I don't know where starting. I'm sorry, I'm French, so, my English can be wrong ... ^^'''' (What is the first thing to learn for draw without reference??) thanks in advance

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dark-spider In reply to Mutsumipat [2009-03-18 14:05:46 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much ^___^.

Well, reference is very helpful to learn how to draw, since it's a good way to practice . You can't draw without reference and have a good result at your first try. My advice is that you try to work part by part. Draw eyes until you do them ok, then began with noses, lips, and at the end do the full face. But tons of times, the only way to learn is to practice a lot . It will be difficult to draw things from your dreams, it takes a lot of patience and experience. But you don't give up and you will do it. My first faces were totally awful, lol .

Also, there's something you can try: draw a face with reference, and then try to do the same face without looking at the first draw or reference. There will be differences that you can check to improve yourself when you draw .

Thanks . It's great to see some people of elfwood around. I hope I could find more time to be around elfwood more ^^.

I would no lie to you: photoshop is not easy to learn. You will have to work a lot of time on it until you achieve a good result. It's like everything in life: you can't know how to do it right at the first attempt . So don't worry if your work doesn't seem right at the beggining, it's natural (my first works sucked pretty much ).

The best advice that I could give you is to practice a lot with it and try every button, every option the program has. It's the way I learned. But perhaps could be helpful to take a look at some begginers tutorial. I don't have any, but there's a lot of them on internet (epilogue for example has a good amount of good tutorials of several levels: [link] ).

I'm curious as to what size canvas and what resolution you used for this, and is that standard for most of your work?

I'm so so sorry for not answer your message before. I have so many to reply and so few time that sometimes messages are left on the way .

My usual size canvas is 50x70 cm (equal to 19,6x27,5 inches), resolution 300. It's the size I use the most, but some times I change it if required.

Thanks for the tutorial- very informative!!
One question: what size canvas do you work in, usually? I tend to have the problem of either working too small, and get the right size or dpi.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dark-spider In reply to Alura6702 [2007-12-20 15:10:05 +0000 UTC]

Thanks I'm glad you find it useful.
I usually work with big canvas, about 50x70 cm (that would be 19x28 inches more or less) and 300 dpi. But if you work better in small sizes, a solution could be to do the rough and less defined strokes in a small canvas and then resize it and work on details.
