Description
Cries of alarm carry over the night sky, drawing hardened warriors to their feet. As men rub the sleep from their eyes, a dozen heavily armed creatures descend upon them, swords and flails gleaming in the moonlight. The cries of combat quickly turn into screams of slaughter as warriors are cut down before their red eyed assailants. The ground runs red with blood.All the while, Imira Hornpine, Hero of the Everlasting Plains, Champion of the Loving Forest, Legendary swordself of great fame, lays in a deep sleep. It soon becomes an eternal slumber.

In my experience, this situation tends to go the same regardless of whether or not the Hero is awake, at least as far as the outcome goes.
Unless of course, the Hero has managed to transcend Noobism and become a Badass.

Well, most of the fantasy stuff I've been doing lately is based on Dwarf Fortress. I do enjoy drawing over on their forums and there is a bit of a 'choose your own adventure' style story I was working on for quite a while... I should probably get back to working on it.

Of all the people in the picture, the one with the arrow through the neck is the one I feel most for. And thus this is why sleep is a status effect in most RPGs, can't fight back while under it's effect.

The only problem with having sleep as a status effect is that you get situations like what I've drawn above there. Sleeping through a swirling melee. One would think the sounds of combat would wake your character
