Description I took this a few mornings ago at about 8 AM while I was walking my dog before work.

I really liked how the insect was clinging to the shell that (I presume) he emerged from, as though he were clinging to his past. It reminds me of the way so many people cling to thier own pasts, from the former jock who peaked physically and socially in high school and spends the rest of his life reliving the "glory days" to the middle-aged divorcee who still finds thier identity in thier ex.

When I shared this with a friend yesterday, she saw a different interpretation, that of a metamorphosis from a dry, bland husk to a bright vibrant insect, a sort of growth and evolution.

So, interpret this either way you wish, or make up your own. But if you make up your own, be sure to share.

Another angle of this can be found in my scraps here [link]

Ughhhhh, *shudder* Thank god they only come out every 17 years. Do you know how hard it is to get these out of 3 feet of hair???
Like how you captured him before he dried and turned black.

cicadas aren't they?

as children, we use to play with the shells of these when playing in our club house in the old oak tree in the backyard!

ah...memories of the good 'ole days!

Yes, it's a cicada. We had a huge swarm of them a couple years ago. I heard that every 17 years they emerge in mass numbers like that. Weird.

Thanks! Our big cicada cycle was last year, but I'm seeing quite a few this year as well. Late bloomers, maybe.

yep he came out of that alright, it's a cicada and we have them alllll over the place where I live, I'm always finding their shells everywhere and they're green and soft like that when they first come out., My friends and I watched one for 2 hours while it emerged from it's old skin.

I always thought they were kind of cute cuz they look like frogs to me

Amazing!!! I have these in my yard right now like crazy...the kittens catch the cicadas and eat all but the wings, hee hee. Several years back, we captured one emerging from it's shell on video. It was awesome! Pretty incredible creatures.

I think I prefer the second interpretation of renewal and starting over again -- emerging from the things that once constricted us and poised to take flight once again.

Yet it's frightening to stand at the threshold of such freedom. Should I hold on to what's familiar and comfortable?

No; life is for the living.

Beautiful.

Very nice inner meaning. The bright green insect is a LITTLE out of focus though If you could find a way to sharpen him up, or blur the background somehow. BUt uh.. this also comes from a non-photographer O.o So... I still adore it ^^

that's really freaky o_o I thought it was just eating another insect, but you were there so you know better *doesnt have insects as weird as this in Scotland * This little beast is a good capture tho

Maybe this is a mother who's given her own body up to host some eggs, and she's now watching over it? One interpretation that likely doesnt have a shred of truth

nice photo! I love how you've got it in such clear focus..the light shades of green are quite beautiful too!

My interpertation, if you didnt have a title, would be "Mine!" I thought the insect was eating the bug-like thing it was holding.
