Description

Legendary’s Godzilla is an Amphibian NOT a Reptile.

According to Monarch and Monsterverse lore, Godzilla came from the Permian period. A time where reptiles and mammal-like creatures called Therapsids ruled. ( and a time when dinosaurs did NOT yet evolve) But another class of animals also ruled during the same time --- these were the amphibians. These Permian amphibians were very unlike amphibians of our time, many growing to super large sizes that match crocodiles today.

In fact, there was a real life Temnospondyl amphibian by the name of Platyhystrix that had spines growing out if its back and rough Godzilla-like skin. This creature coming straight from the Carboniferous/Permian border, matching the time Godzilla’s species existed as well. It proves that a small amphibian could indeed evolve very Godzillaesque traits.

Some of these amphibians were also very terrestrial, developing reptile-like skin and also laid their eggs outside of water in moist areas, similar to the way many Caecilians and Salamanders do today. Godzilla spends much time underwater, in some cases months and even more. This would lead to the notion of Godzilla not only having gills, but some type of oxygen respiration apparatus, where he could absorb oxygen from the water right through his skin, just ike amphibians do. Godzilla has GILLS – yes, GILLS, and in no part of reptile history do they ever have gills! But gills do appear in amphibians numerous times.

The fact that Godzilla has gills and comes from the Permian period, is suggestible of a convergent evolution to dinosaur form, but in this case not a reptile, but a convergent form of amphibian. As for salt water, some ancient amphibians such as Prionosuchus even learned to conquer the open ocean, a feat no modern amphibians can do in today’s time. So knowing these traits, it is far more reasonable to agree that Godzilla is in fact NOT a reptile, but instead a monstrous Amphibian.

In Godzilla lore, it is said Godzilla absorbs radiation and it is this that is later converted into his atomic breath. Reptiles do no such conversion in real life, but many amphibians do. The poison arrow frog develops some of the most potent poisons known to man, by eating acidic ants and using their biochemical defense to their own advantage, making use of it to convert into the poisons the frogs have on their skin.

Another natural conversion is the use of electric fields, like the Electric Eel some researchers believe a few amphibians such as the Sirens and Olms can produce a weak electric field around their bodies, this done to warn of a predator or to find prey in the darkened waters of caves or murky rivers. More so, it is well known that it is Amphibians that actually mutate commonly when exposed to radiation.

This could be seen through studies on salamander larva and tadpoles in irradiated zones such as Chernobyl. This coincides with the mutative aspects of the Titans that Godzilla’s entire biofauna belong to. It is these bio-abilities that Godzilla fits more in tune with, thus pointing to an amphibian lineage. – Dark Riddle

This argument is pretty much debunked on several cases. Legendary Godzilla isn’t the only one with gills, other incarnations do have gills but they are still classified as reptiles. This is likely just convergence evolution, having same traits, but not the same clade.

I think he's a little bit of both.

This had been one of my three theories of what Legendary Godzilla's species could be.

-Archosaur and also the ancestor of all dinosaurs (Including birds) and reptiles.
-Synaspid with convergent evolution (Crocodilian armor-like skin).
-Descendant of an proto-amniote amphibian from the Carboniferous period (Especially given his gills) with convergent evolution (Crocodilian armor-like skin).

I love all three I can't really choose although I love the idea he could be an amphibian with convergent evolution that gives him reptilian like skin.

He doesn't really seem like he'd be either. There are classes of animals that don't exist anymore, and I think Legendary Godzilla would be one of them. His skin is crocodilian, his gills are closer to that of a fish than a tadpole or axolotl, and he's bipedal like a dinosaur.  He kinda defies our current, real-life methods of categorization.

Same goes for the rest, honestly (well, 'cept Mothra I suppose).  Rodan, while shaped like a pterosaur, is bio-volcanic in nature.  It has volcanic rock for skin and is filled with magma.

I'd love a MonsterVerse Titan bestiary that really gets into this stuff, however.

True - there are certainly many mammal and reptiles and amphibians species that do not exists today. He may be in a class of his own...
