"A bit," I say, gently laughing, "I haven't stayed up in years so I'm used to start settling down to sleep around this time."

"Okay then." I said, then put you on my nightstand for a moment as I settled down, then grabbed you and put you on my stomach

I look at you confused for a moment before smiling and stretching out a bit on your stomach, "...Just so you know, I couldn't have wished for a better child to have been given to."

I smiled a bit. "Really?"

I nod, yawning a bit, "Really."

My smile got bigger, and I placed one of my hands over you gently

"Goodnight," I whisper, as my eyes slowly drift close

I smile as I settle down to sleep, a few tears slipping from my eyes. Looking over to the chest in the corner of the room, I feel a slight ache in my heart.

"You okay?" I asked, glancing at you

"I'm fine," I say, not completely sure of the truth of my own comment, "Just...remembering the old days."

"Oh...well, we'll still have a lot of days together...the old days were fun, but at least you're still around..."

I stay silent for a little while before gently clutching at you, "...At least I'm still around..."

I smiled, gently touching you. "I promise you one thing...I'll always keep you around. I'll never throw you away or give you away...I'll keep you forever, because I will always need you around."

"I know..." I whisper, "...I-I'm just glad that you picked me as your favorite toy."

I stay silent for a long time before softly saying, "...I-I really shouldn't be telling you this but...but I'm...I mean..." I sniffle a bit, "A-All the other toys have fallen into their deep sleeps expect me!"

"What?" I asked disbelievingly, taking you off of my stomach and sitting up. "You think...you think playing with them will bring them back? So you're not alone?"

I shake my head, "No. Just playing with a toy will not awaken them. There has to be a need for them to stay awake. The greater the need, the longer they get to stay with their child. In fact, a lot of toys get played with without ever waking. A child does not always need every toy given to them."
I gently rub my eyes to rid a stray tear, "Basically, it is the favorite toys that last the longest most of the time and they stand by their child as long as they can before drifting off to their sleep."

"Why do they have to go, though? The kid'll cry, wanting their best friend back..."

"By the time the child realizes that they miss their favorite toy after they have fallen asleep, the toy has normally already been passed on to another child or...or thrown away," I explain, "When we fall asleep, it isn't because we want to. It's really just a safety thing for our hearts so that if we are thrown away, when we find a new child, we don't hate children for what the previous one did to us...If we can sleep through the dark times, it just makes life a little easier."

I smiled a bit, then looked at the clock. "Whoa...midnight..."

"Really? Wow...I didn't realize it had gotten so late."
