Looking good as usual. I guess this is a remake (or should I say "reconstruction?") of the deviation, "Releasing ASHWORTH," right? I think you should use some of the previous dialogue in its description box. It will save you from having to type up new dialogue. It's all on this [link] Good luck.

Hmm that's odd, the link ain't working but I know which one you're talking about.
Nah I'm using my updated script for the new pages so it's all good.
The previous idea was that he was stuck by some magic crystal and that he was asleep for over 500 years! There as going to be a major reason explaining why that was so but it was too complicated so I scraped it and put a more simpler idea instead. ^^

I see. And yeah, sleeping in a magic crystal for 5 centuries does sound quite cheesy.

This is looking awesome, Ash's expression is just priceless
can't wait to see the rest of the story when it gets published and distributed ^_^
just one thing; will the book be sold to other parts of the globe or just online ?

It's going to be sold physically in my local comic book store and globally online. The accessibility is high and cost of shipping is cheaper if you're in North America (cuz it's printed from their HQs there). *thumbs up*

love the use of screentones on the last panel of page 134 too bad the page is black and white though cus I cant decide wether Ash is trapped in pure gold or ice :B
gold would have been fun buuut I think he would have suffocated in that so lets scrap that idea
Anyhow the progression is looking great cant wait to see more

Ha ha! Solid gold it is! *SHOT* XXD
Yeah man thanks a bunch for your show of enthusiasm on the comic so far! I appreciate your comments on the screen tones. I am getting better at it but there's just so much more to learn to master the technique!
Anyways you'll soon find out why Ashworth the Wombat may be the perfect character for you to VA. *thumbs up* I like how you can switch from a normal cool voice to something ridiculously funny/shocking/unexpected - much like Onizuka from GTO. XD
But yeah man we'll see how Ash is going to get out of this one.

and yes I'd like to see how he'll get out, will Ruby do it the old fashioned why and get an ice pick and chip him out? Or will a conviently placed T-Rex smash his way through and save Ash!? D: I must know now!

Advance Preview!? WOOT.
I have to say my favorite thing in these pages is the ice, you did an awsome job on that including all the other effects ;D
It's cool how Ruby meets Ashworth, another unlucky moment ends up being her luckiest! (er, in a way I guess )
Keep up the good work
(hhmm, will Ashworth ever mention how he got in that ice? maybe in a flashback... very curious x3)

Glad to hear that you liked the ice on the new pages. The effects took some time to manipulate but at the end it came out right! ^_~
I'm sure the question of why Ashworth got stuck in ice will be explained further down the track.

darkspeeds In reply to CastorThePorcupine [2008-09-11 04:12:02 +0000 UTC]
She's generally that type of person who is not a stranger to anyone - she wants to help those in need even if they are people who she doesn't even know.
Foolish but moralistic! This could be some guy who will kill her but she is more worried about not being able to save someone's life.

Hahaha, poor Ashworth! His first debute in a comic and his expression is THAT? XXD Someone contact his agent! He can NOT work under these conditions!
Haha, all joking aside, the pages look incredible! The flow is wonderful, and I can telll you had fun concepting and creating these pages! You can just see all the hard work put into it! I can't help but wonder, did you create some of the tones and use them, or did you find some else where? I'd love to get a hold of some for practicing.
Man! How's Ruby gonna get Ashworth out! And can he hear her as she shouts?
Can't wait to see more of the comic!

darkspeeds In reply to AgentWebdog [2008-09-11 04:22:27 +0000 UTC]
So many questions yet so little time to answer them! I've got 5 more pages to finish this week and I'm on a roll. X3
But yes thanks for making the inquires - I will let you know that the screen tones and speed lines/focus lines are extracted from a program called Manga Studios - the rest of the tones I've made myself from personal photos taken during my trip (e.g. rock textures were from photos of cliffs off at Sydeny's Bondi Beach! XD)
So yeah I'm very economical with my resources! All of these pages can be done in Adobe Photoshop - so it's possible!
Ash can't hear a thing but at least Ruby's trying - she's foolish to help a complete stranger but who doesn't love a character who is willing to risk their life to save another? ^^ *thumbs up*

Ah, I see. ;3 Just out of curiosity, do you use the clone stamp to apply it on a grayscale mode, then adjust levels, or do you use a different method.
;3 I myself am hoping to get a digital camera for art reference and photography (A new hobby of mine!) So I'm curious about your method-I'd love to try and apply it, if only for fun!
Indeed, both foolish and brave. Go Ruby, go!

darkspeeds In reply to AgentWebdog [2008-09-13 03:53:07 +0000 UTC]
I just out a big chunk of the screen tone and paste it as a layer on the page. I then highlight the areas I'd like the screen tone to go on and simple cut away manually and adjust the brightness and contrast to the tone. That is why you see those specs of dust on the tone because I've increaded the contrasting to it.
Oh that method may be done for fun but I promise that it is most useful. I mean I wouldn't have been able to do some of the more complex poses in my FORTUNE in COLOUR pics and comic.
Yay for Ruby! Time for her to bust him out of there! XD
π: 0 β©: 1
AgentWebdog In reply to darkspeeds [2008-09-13 05:56:11 +0000 UTC]
Ah, so you manually cut it away? That's very interesting, and it sounds like a lot of tedious work, but I can tell it definitely pays off. Maybe if I ever plan to go somewhere with the Alliances, that'll be my method aswell, though of course credit goes to you for telling me about it. XD So does that mean you gray scale it manually, over converting it from RGB color, or no?
Yeah, I'm constantly trying to work out poses, but sometimes I just can't seem to ge tit right so then I go out to a big mirror in the hall way and make poses, pause and sketch, then restrike the pose. It's a tad award for anyone who looks in the window from the door and sees me trying to roundhouse kick the mirror repetitively! That's what I like about digital cameras, you can use them, then simply remove them.
Haha, I could just see Ruby sitting there with a tiny hammer and chisel cutting away at the ice about a fragment a minute. XD

darkspeeds In reply to AgentWebdog [2008-09-13 13:48:21 +0000 UTC]
Ha ha! Ruby will be there for a pretty long while then...
Gosh it's pretty cool how you pose in the mirror, sketch and then repeat just to get the right look for the drawing! That's dedication to the art man.
Your camera will save you lots of time acting as a virtual mirror. Store it the pose and view it from the display of your camera!
Best to go for a camera that also has a large display screen on the back. ^^
With regards to the toning I guess you can say that it is manually cutting away the layer - it's very easy once you highlight everything though! XD
Here's a tip - when you have placed the layer on top of something you wanted to shade with set the layer property to 'Multiply'. You can see through it now and also the tone will stick naturally behind the lineart.
Next you highlight the areas below the layer you would like to tone (i.e. the areas in the lineart you want toning). Once you have highlighted the bits you want with the Magic Wand (another tip is to hold the shift button and use the left mouse click to highlight multiple places at the same time) the next thing to do is hold Crtl+Shift+I on your keyboard.
This will reverse everything else that was highlighted earlier. Then press Ctrl+X (i.e. Cut). This will make the tones outside of the highlighted areas diasspear!
And viola! You've manually screen-toned your drawing with Adobe Photoshop!
Hope that helps Lin! *thumbs up*

If I have trouble with perspective, I've really got no choice. I have a little manikin for posing but he's not human, and can't do some of the more simple poses so I just decided to take care of it myself. There's a good few times I've almost knocked the thing over- Mom'd kill me. It's an antique! XD So I think investing in a digital camera may definitely end up saving me from a probable future trouble. Say, if you don't mind me asking, what Camera and model are you using?
Really? So you basically inverse the selection so everything outside the line art is selected? Now that's something interesting! I knew multiply had uses when coloring your line art, but I never thought to put it to use on screen tones. That's really helpful, Darkspeeds! Thanks a lot for the tips! They're defiantly going to come in handy!

Poor Ash...his first appearence, and he's stuck mid-scream in ice! I'm surprised he hasn't chewed you out for that. *laughs*
Anyway, I like these pages! You wrote (and drew, of course) Ruby quite well, and I'm anticipating what will happen when Ashworth finally gets unfrozen. Now that I think about it, how long has he been frozen? Long enough to get a culture shock? I love reading (and writing!) about culture shock...
Ahem. Enough rambling.
So keep up the good work! Hopefully, I'll get ahold of the series soon, and I can read it all!
~Ciel
PS: Ruby calls herself clumsy in this...but didn't you make a big deal awhile ago because you changed her from clumsy to simply unlucky? Just thought I'd ask.

"I'm surprised he hasn't chewed you out for that."
Ha ha! That's because I was lucky, real lucky!
Culture shocks are interesting experiences indeed and something that is worth writing about - though I highly recommend that you see those first hand when you are travelling around the world - then you will be inspired enough to write a best seller!
Yes that is a good point you've made about Ruby being clumsy or unlucky - this is just a play on the joke kind of thing for those who have been knowing Ruby since day one! She is not clumsy at all in the official (that is now) story - she is in fact just unlucky and Chapter 8 will explain a little more on just how much more unlucky she is as she progresses to get her Fortune Hunter's license to attend the World Quest!
I'll come up with an explanation as to why she is unlucky in the first place - and since you are curious it is something to do with the green 'eye-looking' gem she's been wearing on her chest the whole time.
