Penguins of Madagascar - Skipper and Private
I tend to get a little too emotional over Skipper going into daddy mode over Private in the show; and, since I love the penguins showcasing a few of their more animal tendencies...I really REALLY like the thought of the penguins preening each other. So this was born.Β
Also...Lunacorns shouldn't be so much fun to draw. Kinda want to draw Princess Self-Respectra some more.Β

Aww this is really adorable and I like your style! You drew Skipper's face to look so expressive! I would love to see more of their animal tendencies too, I always love when they do something penguin like! Their waddle in the new movie is really authentic looking.

I'm assume you are referring to the mix of both his color choice and the circles under the eyes. BOTH, I assure you. were choices I did on purpose. The lines under the eyes were actually to emphasize the shape that they have in the show, as well as show how they are technically popping-- if you noticed when they turn to the side they actually do that. The eyes pop out of their skull...Kinda freaky and cool. But I digress. The color was because of two things. One...I have a pet peeves with the color white. like, psychologically it messes me up. (Which you don't need, nor probably want, to hear about all my traumatic scarring backstories.) So not only did I have to use an off-white/yellowish color...But i need to show the age difference that I see from the characters. Based off of the show, if we believe what Skipper says, at least, dude has been alive for YEARS. His character is waaay older than Private's. And while I don't see Private as a child, like many fans do, I DO see Private as a young adult/teenager. This I think help emphasizes the paternal feelings I see from Skipper towards the lad in the show, and why he seems so set in protecting him. And...let's admit it, even coddle him at times.Β
My mini essay aside, I AM glad you find it cute all the same. Thank you. I just felt the need to explain the thoughts behind even a simple piece like this. Β

And thank you so much! I absolutely adore their relationship, so I thought I needed to actually draw something. While, admittedly, its not like this ALL of the time...It's obvious that Skipper cares deeply for the lad. He cares about what shapes him into a 'man', he gets beyond worried when things happens to him, and Private seems to have this ability to make Skipper forget that he's angry/worked up as he says something so naive that Skipper just HAS to stop and smile-- followed up by a pat on the head. It's those little moments I love finding in the show, that really flesh out the characters.Β

He's surprisingly VERY sentimental. It's nice to see his softer side in general. But I've laughed AND gotten gooey over seeing him getting over protective/worried over Private. Or the times Private says something beyond naive, and Skipper just smiles down at him and pats his head. Just...

Nice to see his softer side isn't enough, Its WONDERFUL to see his soft side. I'm glad that you like that side of his personality too. Besides I think thats stupid to act more manly than someone is for real. Too bad that skipper don't realize that. Besides he is the most tough penguin man in USA, so what for act too manly?

I think Skipper has a defined sense of manliness, but it's interesting to note the things he DOES that would USUALLY conflict with that. How many macho guys do you know that would gladly pull out a "cute-n-cuddly" routine? Or how many guys do you see that would break down crying because he was worried for a member of their team? While Skipper DOES throw out misogynistic comments from time to time-- which the show, thankfully, plays as both a joke and shows the audience that it isn't the proper thing-- it's interesting to note how fluid he considers the role of a man. It doesn't make you less manly to let your mother smother you, it doesn't make you less manly to have emotions, it doesn't make you less manly to be silly and goofy. THESE things...I love that the show is showing them. I think it's important for the younger generations to see that you can BE a manly figure...and still be human. (Or penguin, as the case technically may be.)

Yes, thats all true. Penguins characters are very well refined. Its funny that you mentioned a "routine". In My eyes, Skipper often does a routine trying to be 200% manly instead of 100%. Some times it's interesting to watch how he fights with his feelings, some times it's funny, and sometimes it's not necessary for him to fight so much, but he still does that. and I think you right, HE CAN be a example of a "manly figure...and still be human (man penguin) I guess.Β
