I'd never even considered volume of the hair before. Wouldn't the extra weight sort of balance it out?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to gibsos [2011-10-12 13:25:45 +0000 UTC]

not necessarily because sometimes the volume is faked by teasing or hairspray XD so you can get away with a larger mass.

Of course! I'm just starting out as a digital artist and reading your tutorials helps me so much! I was wondering, if it's not too much, if I could ask you some questions about light sources? I'm slightly confused by them; like for example, how do you know where to shade the dark areas and light areas?
I currently have my base colours down for a piece of mine but I'm just not sure about how to go on with the colouring/shading/etc.

it's kind of hard to explain without a visual to give you. It takes some practice and the ability to imagine things really well XD. light falls on any surface directly facing the light source that isn't overshadowed by another object.. the flatter and more parallel the surface is to the light source, the brighter the light. shadows go the opposite way - wherever the lightsource isn't directly facing, and anywhere an object blocks another from the light. Hrm. [link] <- check out that tutorial, scroll halfway down, there's some images that might explain what I mean a little more. most of my light source/painting info starts there and goes on into part 2. Maybe it'll help ^^

melonria In reply to DarlingMionette [2011-06-18 18:25:22 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I see; thank you for the explanation and tutorial! It actually did help me. It'll all confusing right now but I suppose with time I'll begin to understand the concept of light sources.
But say, you have a character that's facing the front, and the light source is directly behind the character. Would the light only be on the edges of the character or does it slightly climbs over the edge a bit? In my head I see the light slightly climbing over, so I was just wondering.

DarlingMionette In reply to melonria [2011-06-18 22:59:15 +0000 UTC]

It would depend on the angle of the light and the surfaces of the pose. if it's (for example) right behind their head, you'd see an outline of light around the head, but probably a bit more on the jaw, shoulders, and neck where the surfaces are at a 90 degree angle to the lightsource, and flat enough (for at least a little ways) that some of the light would skim along them.

melonria In reply to DarlingMionette [2011-06-20 17:55:52 +0000 UTC]

Hm, I see now; I'm just having difficulty trying to imagine the jaw part. I think that's where it becomes confusing for me. Like if the light source is directly behind the head, how does the light reach the jaw? Uh, another one; for example in this one: [link]
The light source is mainly coming from the left section, right? So why does the light show on the lower edge of her thumb and not on the pointer finger? Is the light too dim to reach there or it just doesn't reach there?
Oh, another one; how do you determine how strong the light source is and how long the light goes? Ah, I apologize about the load of questions there. Dx

DarlingMionette In reply to melonria [2011-06-20 19:10:01 +0000 UTC]

Not a problem XD I really don't mind the questions. First, for the light behind the head, I have an example for you! ([link] ) as for the lighting on that picture, the index finger actually IS lit up, but it's hard to tell cause the picture is itty bitty. For the light source brightness: it depends how bright you want to make it XD The sun, for instance, is bright enough that it'll hit just about everywhere with nearly the same light density. A flash light however, or any other weaker light (lanterns, overhead lights etc) have a fall off radius (after all a flashlight can't see FOREVER into the darkness can it?) how far you set the radius from the lightsource origin determines how bright it is. The closer an object is to your light source though, the brighter the light and the deeper the contrast in the shadows on that object.

psh np. sometimes you need a good solid builiding block. this is great for tuts. and i admire that as i am going to start making video tutorials.

be my friend XD

time lapse. and im honestly not saying my drawings are teaching worthy. im far from pro. but as you know theres tons of stuff for digital and its overwhelming for most.

if used right these things save you tons are time and make fancy art too XD. so i just wanna help people learn solid processes for the task i do on a regular basis trying to make good looking drawings XD

we think alike ^^ I'm all about self-improvement, but at the same time helping others to learn what I already know - hoping it at least saves them some of the struggle. So many artists completely hoard art-information >.<
