So when it comes to flatting the image, the lineart doesn't need to be in different layers?
π: 0 β©: 1
DarlingMionette In reply to Lana-Lee [2013-08-14 03:51:46 +0000 UTC]
not necessarily no. There are ways of doing it on one layer, but it's more difficult and hard to make edits later on. I usually work with one layer of lines, and a second layer under that for the painting.

Lana-Lee In reply to DarlingMionette [2013-08-14 04:31:44 +0000 UTC]
That's what I do. With the linework. And for the layers you use for painting, you useΒ separate layers for certain parts?
π: 0 β©: 1
DarlingMionette In reply to Lana-Lee [2013-08-14 04:37:49 +0000 UTC]
It depends on the picture, but usually if I'm afraid I'll mess something up, or i'm starting a new section, i'll put that on a separate layer until i'm sure it's going to go the way I want.. and then i'll merge it with the main layer later. It keeps me from making any major mistakes I can't reverse

Lana-Lee In reply to DarlingMionette [2013-08-16 02:39:37 +0000 UTC]
So you merge. Okay. Thank you for the tips. I just got SAI so I'm still learning ways to color.Β ^^

DarlingMionette In reply to Lana-Lee [2013-08-16 22:53:43 +0000 UTC]
no worries it takes some time to learn, but in my experience, sai is so much easier to learn than most paint programs, and has some really great results
if you run into any problems or have any questions, feel free to message me anytime
I've been using it for years, so i'm pretty knowledgeable about it.

I've noticed that SAI takes time. I'll be sure to ask if I have other questions. Thanks again

If you check out my custom brush supplement (in the tutorial section of my gallery) it has all my brushes The one I painted most of this tutorial with is called simply "brush"

Thanks for the tutorial (I've been faving tons of yours, sorry about the spam xD But they are so complete and detailed, they're amongst the most useful tutorials I've seen on dA, I HAD to fave them so I can find them again if I ever need it).
So, I've got a silly question : what does CG stand for? I always see people talk about "CGing this, CGing that", but I've never seen anyone use the fall name for it so I don't even know what it means xD
π: 0 β©: 1
DarlingMionette In reply to Yuki-Namida [2013-01-21 17:42:08 +0000 UTC]
XD it originates from the phrase "computer graphics" but it actually has several meanings XD the first meaning (and more readily understood) is that it pertains to any form of digital media created on a computer... this usually means 3D rendered models such as the movie Finding Nemo or Toy Story.. and that's what most people know it for. The second, less understood meaning (which is actually older) is more pertaining to art... when someone colors or paints a piece of art on a computer it usually referred to as "CGing". Dunno how it came about, but it's been in use for the last couple of decades at least :3 In my tutorials I'm using the second meaning obviously ^^ Now a days some people mistakenly refer to CGing (in its second context) as "Rendering" but it isn't an appropriate alternative.. Rendering ALWAYS refers to 3D modeling, never art.

im kind of lost with my order of processing pics. i mean it's stupidly messed up. as i now looked at your tutorials (i've been watching these couple times before~) i realized i really need to organize my working. i decide where lights and shadows and other important stuff (like poses etc. lol) are going to be after im already painting it.. :I it get's hard to change 'em afterwards xD this may actually be one reason i lose my interest in working my pics so quickly and don't feel like finishing 'em correctly. i feel so dumb
your tutorials are really helpful and easy to understand.. at times also fun to read - that unibrow x)
thank you for helping!

awwies thank you XD, and you're very welcome yah i've found working with a thumbnail sketch/lighting thumbnail at first helps to plot out all the details ahead of time XD

One day, when I'm doodling, I realized everything I draw is based on some tutorial you have, whether its lighting or facial proportion. I love your tutorials, they really help me improve as an artist. And the recent redlines made me figure out similar mistakes I've made so I've been correcting those too. Thank you~

CG : Computer Generated, but in the context of this tutorial (and what you'll hear it most used for on DA), it's mean to mean that something is colored on the computer ^^

I have been looking at every single tutorial you have, well, almost all. I'm going slow, trying to remember everything on your tutorials for the most part. I am taking your advice with making an inspiration folder and will be finding pictures like you said! I am very happy with your tutorials, I learn alot with each one. Now I know to draw everyday, even if it's just doodling. I used to draw on thw eekends ONLY, but now I will start(hopefully..school is starting to ruin my life) drawing everyday.
Anyways, I wanted to take the time and thank you for your awsome tutorials. They are a great help to me and I'm sure everyone! Once again, thank you. Also, your an amazing artist!

There's a nifty tool in SAI called 'luminance to transparency' under 'layers' which separates the lineart, and in PS, just a quick use of channels can separate it too
I personally find I don't have the patience to flat, so half my works are unfinished
I can't help but think that your hair is a pain to color xD
π: 0 β©: 1
DarlingMionette In reply to laniessa [2011-01-04 14:20:55 +0000 UTC]
XD i never trust settings that do things automatically, it's probably just my OCD talking, but i do everything manually -_-, and yes, flatting takes a LOT of patience. it's very time consuming :3 and you're right about the hair -______- omg it's a pain in the butt.
π: 0 β©: 1
laniessa In reply to DarlingMionette [2011-01-07 13:54:15 +0000 UTC]
We're completely different then - I'm really lazy and I take a lot of shortcuts (like making my image huge to make it look better when it's resized), but I always draw my lineart with a tablet.
Still, I really admire people who can spend a lot of time on one image.
