Description YAY tutorial. Finished it up. I didn't get into many specifics towards the end, because it would just be repeating what I already explained in Part 1.

I bought my paint tool sai :3 just like everyone else - but I have custom brushes. If you check my tutorial section in my gallery you can find a tutorial on how to make custom brushes, and a custom brush supplement that actually has the download link to download the brushes I use :3

What does "CG" mean?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to PhantasselArt [2012-05-18 00:16:13 +0000 UTC]

CG means "Computer Generated" or "Computer Graphics" depending who you ask - in art terms it's usually used to mean "coloring on the computer"

I am in love with this tutorial. Shading faces is a bit of a struggle for me, just because I get a little too excited when coloring and end up missing parts that should be left highlighted. (I use traditional tools, so ctrl-Z isn't an option. ) This will make a great 'checklist'. Thank you so much!

Okay, that's it. I think I'll stop spamming you with favs now xD
With that said, I really like the end result of this tutorial. I personally will probably stick to cell-shading (I am planning on being some sort of animator, after all), but you gave the painterly-style a new light in my eyes. You're quite skilled ^^

synyster-gates-A7X [2010-11-09 22:03:07 +0000 UTC]

awesome! This is a huge help! I find it really hard to make short, straight hair look interesting and properly shaded though... any suggestions?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to synyster-gates-A7X [2010-11-10 14:15:23 +0000 UTC]

It depends how short, if we're talking short, female hair, then work with your lightsource - you'll want shadows on the underside of the hair, the part, and a little bit of a dull shadow where the hair falls from the crown of the head behind the ear - hair usually dips in a little there. also, adding shadow towards the tip of the hair sometimes helps. I can't be much more helpful without seeing an example XD

Oh my goodness, this was wonderously helpful! Skin is my biggest issue, so such detail is amazingly helpful, thank you do much!

Only one question...what scale do you work in? My pieces tend to be small, but I've been noting a distinct lack of ability to do more detailed things and have been wondering what a good scale to work at is...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to Whisperwings [2010-11-08 18:49:04 +0000 UTC]

I generally aim for my pieces to be finished at about 900-1000 pixels wide, and however tall they need to be to fit those proportions. I zoom in a LOT while I work, about 500-800% to get all the details I want. It helps if your DPI is 300+.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Whisperwings In reply to DarlingMionette [2010-11-08 19:08:29 +0000 UTC]

Oooo didn't even think about adjusting DPI! But that's awesome, thanks so much!
