Description My submission for the July '06 KFM Duelling Circle Challenge, "Action". I wasn't in the mood to be serious, so I decided to poke a little fun at how one seemed to get attacked by animals everywhere one went in both KotOR games. (No peaceful herbivores around, huh? I can understand Dxun, but... Dantooine! where are the iriaz, for starters? And surely the creatures everywhere aren't uniformly territorial - only a small percentage of animals are actually territorial... on Earth, anyway - or going through a mating seasion or ravenously hungry all at the same time? and even so, why is it that their hunting/attack behaviour are all the same? Okay, I know, it's because it's a game, and it wasn't made by the fellows who did Half Life or Biohazard. But I've made fun of so many other aspects of the game that I might as well go on poking fun at it!).

I suppose they have to do it so that players can have violent encounters with said animals? haha. I can't imagine one scoring much by way of experience points by slaughtering innocent bantha!

Heh, I have that one mod that restores the Iriaz...they attack me too.

I remember the multiplayer sessions of "Neverwinter Nights" with some friends from a forum (all guys, me being the only girl.). We were playing an Evil group (usually we all play Good characters. I am always Chaotic Good usually, and a rogue to boot.), and it was fun. However, the guys had a tendency to attack everything on sight. So we were walking through the forest, and they started attack random wildlife (They did that a lot. I felt quite a lot like I was herding a bunch of little children, only I believe little children are better behaved and have more common sense. *rolls eyes* Still, they're good friends, and it's fun to play with them.). Sure, the wolves and bears attacked us first, but they were quite a bit away from the path. And the guys also suddenly started attacking the deer in that forest, who were mostly harmless if you left them alone.

Now, the funny thing was, they were getting "pawned" by the random wildlife. Not only the bears and wolves, but they were getting killed again and again by the deer they had angered, before they managed to take it down. I later found out that we accidentally had used too low level characters than was required for the mod (I think it was "Cave of Songs".).

So yeah, random wildlife is dangerous.

Isn't it nice to know that at least the Gizka are not thirsting for your blood?

Well, I dunno. I think it would be hilarious to watch the party members battle gizkas. (Kind of like that Cati the Gizka mod for K2).

I haven't played enough RPGs, clearly. (The only ones I've ever played are K1 and K2; I'm more a fan of 3rd-person shooters). I was thinking of getting Neverwinter Nights, but didn't know enough people who'd played it to get reviews/opinions. But if you say you can randomly attack wildlife...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jazhara7 In reply to DarthFar [2008-01-17 13:36:12 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you can indeed attack random wildlife. IIRC you can attack nearly everything (I think there might be a small resriction, stopping you from attacking any of your companions or anyone who is temporarily in your group at the time. But everyone else is free.) You simply have to right click on them and select "Attack".

And then there's that one silly cheat called "Cows from Hell" which summons a bunch of flying cows that zoom of from where your character is, and attack anyone in the area. It's a bit dangerous though, because if someone is not instantly killed by that attack, they come to get you. And no, I'm not messing with you.

Oh, and according to a comment in the Hordes of the Underdark (the second expansion of NWN) catapult script, it is possible to use cow projectiles, though I yet have to see any mod make use of that option. But seriously, silly Bioware programmers. *grins*

I can recommend both NWN 1 and 2. The OC of NWN 2 is nice, though not that great. But then again, the OC of NWN 1 wasn't that great either. In both cases it was the expansions that were really great, with NWN 1 having HotU as the best of the expansions. "Mask of the Betrayer" is the first expansion for NWN 2, and I really enjoyed it, though others didn't (but you never can please everyone). I still like NWN 1 better than NWN 2, but NWN 2 is starting to grow on me. If you decide to get NWN 2 too, I recommend buying the download version from Atari's website, as I had some troubles with faulty discs (I've tried three different discs, each one had a faulty spot at one point or the other, making the file at that point unusable. Way to go, Atari! *glares* ).

The real gold value of the NWN games is the fact that everyone can make mods with the toolset that comes with the game, and share them with other players. This way, you have a nearly endless supply of great module contents for every taste. There's pure hack'n'slash ones, but also great roleplaying ones. Sites like the Neverwinter Vault ( [link] ) host those mods for free. There's some really good ones like "The Aielund Saga", "Tales of Arterra", "Threat of Dreams" (this one isn't complete yet, though it might be redone in NWN 2), and "Sanctum of the Archmage" (this series isn't complete yet either, but it's still being worked on. The first few modules are in NWN 1, and the rest are going to be in NWN 2. Though this is awkward because you can't transfer character files from NWN 1 to NWN 2. But the first modules will eventually also be remade for NWN 2)

There aren't as many modules for NWN 2 yet as there are for NWN 1, as obviously it takes some time for them to be made, but there's already some great ones like Adam Miller's Dark Waters, and Rogue Dao studio's Planescape Trilogy (though this one is no longer free, as the creator has been assimilated by Obsidian. It's going to be available for download as a Premium module, and it's looking great. I hear it's going to be about 40 hours gameplay.).

Uh...I sound like I want to sell you something, do I? Sorry about that. I tend to ramble a bit when I get started.

I really don't regret buying NWN 1, in any case. And that's saying something, because back when I first bought it, I discovered my computer was too slow to play it properly. So it rested on my shelf for a few years, and one day I thought, why not try it anyway. And these days I wouldn't want to miss it. ^_^ And like I said, I'm starting to appreciate NWN 2 too, though I was sceptical at first.

Do I even have to tell you I nearly fell out of my chair laughing? I think it was Atton's lightsaber fizzling out that got me the worst. (Exile *told* him to change the batteries, but nooo.) That, and Di high-tailing it away from the zakkeg. Those boys are such wimps!
