100 Pictures Challenge #46: Family.Personal birthday card art, whereby [Lack of inspiration + Lack of sleep] x Obscene quantities of coffee = Mindblowingly, sickeningly cutesy art suspiciously resembling product of a deranged mind.
At least, I'm using that as excuse because I don't know what the hell possessed me to draw this. That, and I was sick of painting roosters and violins every year. This started out as a cartoon (which probably makes it worse), but then it went in a really strange direction, and I don't know what it is anymore.
Um, happy birthday, dad?

The lightplay is amazing. Although I think that dolphin in the front is giving me the stink-eye.

Well, it all depends on the point of view. Just imagine you were a tasty little fish and the picture instantly turns very threatening.
Still, it's a really pretty if somewhat creepy picture (I'm still in fish-mood) and the patterns of light on the dolphins and the ground add so much to it.

Reminds me of those dolphin statues I admired as a kid. btw, those two dolphins on the bottom...they're out of proportion.

Seriously though: this is marvelous--gorgeous luminosity, with the sunlight sparkling down through the water and over their sinuous forms, the "smoke-ring" bubbles drifting toward the surface, the apparent curiosity of the forward-most dolphin..."What's doin'?" These are amazing creatures--top predators, so good at getting what they prey on that they have plenty of time to play... I love it, and I know your father loves it too.
And I still know you're just messing with us...

From a technical standpoint, it's wonderfully executed.
From a thematic standpoint, why not just imagine that this lovely pod of dolphins is about to accidentally swim over the sunken city of R'lyeh? WHO KNOWS WHAT HAPPENS THEN?

Rim, that is the BEST IDEA EVER. Who knows indeed? maybe some kind of illicit cross-breeding might happen (screw genetics!), resulting in hideously tentacled cetaceans, or some other form of deep-sea horror.

Aww, I love dolphins. I don't know why you're worried about your reputation. This isn't that sickeningly cute, except insofar as dolphins are cute, and I always feel like I'm insulting them when I call them cute because they're also really intelligent. I always feel like they'd laugh at me in a patronising way if they knew...
Anyway! I really like it. The underwater look is spot-on - I love the colours and the play of light on the bottom. And great job with the dolphins themselves as well, of course.

I'm supposed to be evil and scheming, that's why! Or maybe these dolphins are just deceptively innocent, and they can actually morph into horrible, fanged sea monsters! [is still trying to salvage reputation]

We-hell, you know, dolphins are actually pretty badass even without morphing. They look cute, sure, but try being a fish, or a shark. 
Oooh, and have you seen that video of the dolphin and the cat who made friends? (I was reminded of it because of the whole taking-over-the-world thing... what better land-based allies for that than cats?)
