Description
"You were the Chosen One! It was said that you would destroy the Sith, not join them. Bring balance to the Force, not leave it in darkness!"- Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Painting of my favourite scene in ROTS. Yes, the one in which Anakin Skywalker gets flambΓ©'d.
I've realised that my greatest weakness where painting is concerned is - I depend entirely too much on preliminary sketches. If I have to do everything from scratch digitally - *especially* if it means painting from blobs of colour - I'm pretty much bantha fodder. So from now on, whenever I can, I'm going to force myself to do exactly that. (Uh, practice, I mean, *not* become bantha fodder). Even if it means subjecting my hapless watchers to crappy paintings.
EDIT: Fixed his damned teeth.
Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mustafar, and everything else Star Wars property of George Lucas.

I just can't believe I missed this piece when I browsed before!! **slaps forehead** What an amazing capture of a most emotional, gripping moment: his face just screams his anguish and anger, his grief and despair at having "killed" his friend, his padawan...his brother... I cried the first time I saw this scene--MacGregor's performance was very powerful here, and really got me. Just wow...an amazing piece of artwork!

Thank you very, very much.
That was probably the most spectacular bit of acting in both SW trilogies. (Another would be Obi-Wan's reaction at seeing his master getting cut down by Darth Maul). I loved how raw and unrestrained that climatic scene was. All the emotion was just - gushing out of him.

"Obi-Wan's reaction at seeing his master getting cut down by Darth Maul"
Oooo, yeah--that was awesome, too--"raw and unrestrained" definitely fits as a descriptor there, as well. In any case, you've certainly captured that feeling in this piece!

I really like the use of 'film' in this one-- makes it feel dynamic, and moving. Lovely colors, excellent likeness, and I like the texture on his robes, too. Faving this one, too.

Thanks very much! The 'film' border is there because I was an idiot and made my painting square instead of rectangular, and got stuck trying to 'frame' it. I'm glad it turned out for the better.

I really loved that scene; Obi-wan's anguish is so moving and you did perfect justice to it The celluloid border was a cool touch too!

Thank you very, very much. Unconventional borders can come in *so* useful when you haven't planned in advance, and wind up with a picture of weird dimensions.

This looks so awesome! I've always felt terrible for Obi-Wan during this scene. I mean, come on. He just dismembered his best friend! I'd be broken-hearted too. But the way this turned out is amazing. And it's all digital? I'm in awe...

Heh, his teeth look great I find teeth very hard to paint.
I like the colour and it's an excellent likeness...the idea of having it framed like a piece of cinema film is cool. ( come to think of it I should pay more attention to framing my own work )

Thanks very much! (and for the fave!)
Hahaha, you know, my original canvas was almost square (no thanks to my lack of planning), and it drove me half-mad trying to come up with a frame for it. (I tried stretching out a very Gaussian-blurred version into A4 size... but it looked terrible). In desperation, I decided to try the cinema film approach... and it worked much better than anything else. Framing's always a pain.

Yeah, the few times I've framed something I ended up really frustrated. I stink at the 'graphic art' side of things Bleh!

I started the other way around. Almost all the stuff I did before Dec '05 were graphics stuff - mostly snazzy avatar and signature sets for various forums. So I know my way around transparencies and line tools and effects... but not painting.

Gee, it's amazing to think you've just started digital painting so recently Your work is really good...and your style is distinctive and original. That counts for a lot, in my opinion! I think too many people try to imitate other people's style, especially in the digital community. I love it when I come across someone whose work is different

Thank you very, very much. Aside from a brief Mickey Mouse stint as a very young kid, I don't think I've ever seriously tried doing somebody else's style (I suppose it helped that I never liked anime). Mostly because I feel confined, trying to emulate someone else, but also... because I'm, well, stubborn. It's a double-edged sword. I do wind up with what now feels like my own look, *but* it's also hard to stray far away from it, and it's also almost impossible for me to follow a tutorial before giving up and going my own way halfway through.
And uh, I suppose the ten-plus years I spent not doing any coloured work allowed the slate to be cleared so that I could start afresh without being encumbered by stuff I didn't understand as a kid. Lack of practice, is, I suppose, not as horrible as some people think.

How funny, I had a long break from art too. I think it was good, though, as you say...a chance to let the pieces fall into place. I don't think I've changed in style significantly after the break, but the experience of observation over the years has paid off. It's easier to work without reference now
Sheesh, if that's the consequence of being stubborn, stay that way. I don't see any point in rehashing someone else's ideas...
Sad to think how many really good artists are wasting their time following someone else's style. I think we lose out on a lot of new ideas because of that.

DarthFar In reply to MBoulad [2007-01-22 02:47:20 +0000 UTC]
I still have huge banks of photo references. [chuckle] Everything from Elizabethan clothing to Spanish galleons. I don't think I'll be comfortable working completely without refs anytime in the near future, but at least I can not dig up Andrew Loomis every five seconds now, and not be reduced to a whimpering wreck.
And yeah... I see a lot of [otherwise] really good artists out there who are doing artwork in the style of some established artist, and wonder why they don't just go off their own way. ... And then I review the contents of my own gallery and see the piles of game fanart in it, and decide that I might be in the same boat after all.

MBoulad In reply to DarthFar [2007-01-24 12:44:16 +0000 UTC]
You have Loomis books? If so, you're lucky! I hear they're very rare nowdays. I did find a site that has them online, but it's not the same as sitting down with the book at leisure (and the sites seem to disappear fairly quickly, darn it)
Even if you're painting fan art your technique is original. I wouldn't call that following someone else's style

Uh... if you mean hard copies, no. I found them online here, quite sometime back: [link] Took me forever to download every single page! I've tried looking for them at all the major bookstores, but it would seem that they're out of print. At least, in these parts.
And uh, thanks again.

I loved this bit. I have such a foul hatred for Anakin that watching him have his legs cut off and his torso roasted was very satisfying. Sorta made up for three films worth of whine, whine, whine.
Awesome picture, as usual, I envy your drawing skills... so good!

"I have such a foul hatred for Anakin [...]" ROFL! That pretty much sums up my feelings as well. It was a pleasure watching him fry in lava. At least we know where Luke inherited *that* whiny attribute from.
And thank you very much.

I particularly loath that whinebag for ruining Darth Vader... well, not really, Vader sort of exists in a different continuity from Anakin in my head, it's better that way. Poor Luke though, having a dad like that *shakes head*

Ohhhhh my Goooooood. What were you thinking?! This does not subject us to horrible paintings! This subjects us to your full awesomeness! The picture is raw. It's full of detail and emotion...and it screams the way Obi-Wan did. This looks like a good year for you - you've already jumped three steps ahead. One day, when you're a famous concept artist or something for BioWare or somesuch, I'll be able to say "I knew this guy! I saw his beginning paitings jump to his masterpieces!" No one will believe me, but it doesn't matter. I can boast it honestly, and I really mean boast, because that is...WOW.

[turns bright tomato-red] You know, any more comments like these and the blood vessels in my face would explode. Or something. There's some consolation, though, in the fact that I'll feel warm and fuzzy just before the lights go out.
Seriously, thanks, Nell. I don't think BioWare - or any other art/game companies, for that matter! - needs a (disgruntled) mad scientist who will happily talk to plates of bacteria, but I'm touched by your evaluation of my skills nonetheless.
