Description
"You were the Chosen One! It was said that you would destroy the Sith, not join them. Bring balance to the Force, not leave it in darkness!"- Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Painting of my favourite scene in ROTS. Yes, the one in which Anakin Skywalker gets flambΓ©'d.
I've realised that my greatest weakness where painting is concerned is - I depend entirely too much on preliminary sketches. If I have to do everything from scratch digitally - *especially* if it means painting from blobs of colour - I'm pretty much bantha fodder. So from now on, whenever I can, I'm going to force myself to do exactly that. (Uh, practice, I mean, *not* become bantha fodder). Even if it means subjecting my hapless watchers to crappy paintings.
EDIT: Fixed his damned teeth.
Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mustafar, and everything else Star Wars property of George Lucas.

There's nothing wrong with his eyes! I told you when you showed me that he eyes were very much his. I should know, I have Ewan all over the place! Including an original autographed piccy

Yeah, sorry, the shock was too much. I'm in awe over the details. My Obi fangirling aside, the burn marks in the robe, the sweat, the hair, and the film-like arrangement is just...awesome.

Well uh, thanks again. The sweat actually went on later, after I ran it by a friend whose good ideas never seem to run out.

Well, he was certainly more expressive and convincing than any of the other characters in the prequels. His anguish when Qui-Gon was cut down, and during the Mustafar battle - that's great acting.

Oh... just wow. If I had only an incredibly small fraction of your talent, I'd jump around for joy and paint Ewan for the rest of my life. This is awesome... the colors, and the emotion (and the Ewan), and wow. It's awesome.

Oooh, lovely and angsty. I love the detail in his beard. Very nice.
"the *teeth* on the other hand... egads, the teeth. Look like an orthodontist's nightmare."
And the truth comes out; Di's frightening toothiness did not die out , it was instead passed on, all the way to Obi-Wan Kenobi.

So Obi-Wan was descended from Mical?? I should've guessed!
At least he didn't inherit Di's tendency for bad hairstyles.
Thanks very much, Occy.

Nice likeness and expression on him, I like the framing him on film too.

... Because I depend too heavily upon it. Being too dependent upon any particular thing can be bad for you, especially when you have limited abilities to begin with. (I still can't do traditional coloured media to save my life).
I've never denied I was a Star Wars fanatic. And thanks!

You clearly haven't done enough art history class if you think you're too dependant on them.

Art history class? *what* art history class? The only arts-related classes I ever took were music and 19th century English literature. I could argue circles around you over opera reform, but what I know of art history can probably be fitted into the back of a business card.

Well you see, the Venetian masters of the Renaissance era used to be very big pre-painting work. So much so they they considered the proper process to be to draw what you were going to paint at least four times in charcoal to make sure you got it right before you even considered sketching it out on the canvas.
At the same time, the master of Florence, heavily influenced by Titian, would rarely do much prelim work beyond a few studies of stuff they weren't familiar with and would begin by placing colours and then refine it in layer after layer.
So essentially, it's just a difference in style. Venetians tended to get better form and greater attention to detail while the others would have more vibrant and captivating colours. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

Ah. My ignorance in art is astounding. Thanks, J. I feel slightly better about relying on pencil lines now. (And yet cannot help but still feel envious of people like Bergkvist who can produce masterpieces from... well, a clean digital canvas).

I went to an art class once where the teacher told us before we drew anything we had to do at least two sketches where we measured out and counted everything to be perfect. Then the next week my mother watched a video of an artist sketching a bird from scratch, top down and he he commented, "Now we paint in the breast feathers, of course first one has to know how many there are." without missing a stroke.
Some people just have their material really visualized in their brains, and I am forever envious of them.

Oh my gosh... I thought it was a photograph until I looked closer! You seriously painted this entire thing? Not that I'm doubting you, I just think it's amazing... I'm totally in awe. I can't paint digitally to save my life, so I really appreciate this piece of work! And it's my favorite Jedi of all time in one of his angsting moments... so all the more better!
I really love it! Definitely one of the best Obi-Wan paintings I have ever seen. And the film border is a very nice touch.

No, actually I just happened to be on Mustafar with my digital camera. It was no small miracle that *I* didn't get deep-fried.
Thank you very, very much. (And if you haven't noticed - I couldn't paint digitally to save my life either, at the beginning of last year. It's something that takes practice. Given that you already know how to work with colours, I think it shouldn't be a problem for you to get started).

LadyofRohan87 In reply to DarthFar [2007-01-07 07:18:34 +0000 UTC]
Haha... Well, Mustafar is a dangerous place! I've been there myself many a time... good to see you made it out alive! Oh, and by photograph I actually meant "screencap" but I see that you caught my little typo and found humor in it. It gave me a good laugh!
Hmmm... do you really think I'd do okay on a digital program? I actually have Adobe Photoshop and I'm currently learning and practicing cell shading, so it's a start! I'm still getting used to the program because there's so much to utilize. I'm sure it'll take a great deal of time before I can do advanced stuff, but I'm slowly making progress. My only issue lately is finding the time to practice.
π: 0 β©: 1
DarthFar In reply to LadyofRohan87 [2007-01-07 08:29:09 +0000 UTC]
Actually, to a certain extent, digital is actually *easier* than traditional media, for two good reasons: (1) the eraser tool, and (2) CTRL+Z (aka 'Undo'), both of which I flagrantly abuse. (Of course, I can't draw smooth lines to save my life, but... I can live without them). There isn't really all that much you need to know about the programme to get started. Just stuff like: layers (without which I am nothing!), locking layer transparency (so that you don't colour 'outside the lines'), and how to adjust the brush/paint transparency and size so that you can either have a thick dollop that covers everything, or a thin coat that goes over other layers of paint. Anything else you may find in the programme is considered a bonus.
And any progress is better than no progress at all. You may be surprised at how quickly things come together.

Crappy? You can subject us all you want, I think that you've done a wonderful job on this. You managed to capture a lot of the emotion that Ewan put into Obi-Wan in that scene - one that I too love, even though the crawling burnt stump does tend to make me laugh while I'm still appreciating Obi-Wan in his angst.

Crawling burnt stump - !!! Anakin doesn't have very much dignity left, does he?
And thank you very, very much. That scene probably had more raw emotion than *any* other scene in the prequels (save Qui-Gon's demise)... which, I suppose, says something about the new movies...

Uh... yeah, it looked odd to me too, but I thought that was just me. And then you mentioned it... so I went and checked by taking the original and overlaying it on my painting. The eyes are aligned with the original (I guess he's just not perfectly symmetrical ); the *teeth* on the other hand... egads, the teeth. Look like an orthodontist's nightmare.
Thanks for the heads-up, though, and thanks!

Nah, it's just that I couldn't make all that much out on the original picture because it was kind of small, so the details are kind of iffy. I'll always appreciate pointers that'll head me off in the right direction.

Firera In reply to DarthFar [2007-01-07 13:23:32 +0000 UTC]
Hmmm...what I actually meant was darkening the teeth that are nearer to the shadows, in a way. Might help. ^^ There isn't a bigger pic online? Maybe freezing the frame might help.
