Description So............

This image was a holy bitch to render. I had to sit and babysit the damn thing. Rendering a few squares at a time, saving it, rendering, them piecing the whole thing together.

Not sure what the deal was, maybe it was the insane displacement maps, but the dialogue between me and the computer went something like............

"Render the image please Hal".................
"Render the image please Hal".................
"Hal?"
"Render the fucking image Hal!"
"I'm sorry Dave, (even though that's not my name) this conversation can serve no further purpose, goodby....."
\"Hal..............................Hal.................HAL!!!!!!!\"

UGH. I think it was easier to build the damn thing than it was to render it.

Yeah I know I know, I was more focused on his armor and face tattoos that I forgot to do the proper body. BUT, I can always fix that for future renders.

This is probably the most epically terrifying artistic interpretation of Krayt I've seen on the net. Excellent job. Given that it's just a standard non-cinematic style render, I'm not too picky about the fact that the lighting is a bit mystifying. I think the eyes could use a bit more shine to them. The armor is fabulous. Great effort as usual.

This is amazing, what did you use to make and render him in? I've tinkered with 3D Studio and now Carrara and I have yet to make anything THIS awesome

darthhell In reply to wario7793 [2009-12-21 03:10:58 +0000 UTC]

It was 3ds Max. It took lots of practice. I would say actually this was the first really complicated thing I ever made, and I couldn't believe how well it came out.

wow nice! I did make a few simple 3D models back in 1995 and I bought a premade model and tinkered with it in Carrara Pro, but I'm still struggling with it. well, I am trying to do animation more than modeling from scratch but yeah, it's great to see awesome examples of 3D models like this!

darthhell In reply to wario7793 [2009-12-21 03:44:06 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Yeah the animation part is not my arena, but I'm trying to teach myself a bit of it lately. The creation of bones and such makes me want to slam my head into the monitor sometimes. But I've been building more and more character type stuff, and I want to just abandon poser altogether since the posing is all I use it for anymore.

wario7793 In reply to darthhell [2009-12-21 04:37:07 +0000 UTC]

yeah, I know what you mean. I tinkered a little with Poser and couldn't do much beyond basic posing lol but I plan on tinkering with a new model idea and see if I can figure out some more animation.

He definitely looks like one seriously mean mo-fo. The sheer appearance of him alone seems to be almost enough to deter any foe from thinking they would be able to beat him. Darth Vader has got the same advantage. If Vader's suit was pink, I'm betting there would have been plenty of people that would fancy their chances trying to take him on, even if they didn't have a hope in hell.

Back to your image, Krayt's armour looks superb. He just looks so damn menacing. Funnily enough, despite my comments for the previous image of him, I think this version of him would have benefitted from some visual sign of his eyes. I think the reason behind that is because there is more of his presence visible beneath and around the armour. More of his body, his flesh. I was picturing a faint glow of Dark Side eyes through the mask.

That remark doesn't stand as a criticism though, just a possible alternative of the existing image (and my suggestion may have even taken away the impact of the image). What is actually present looks kick ass.

Which software are you using? If you're using 3ds Max to render there are some very cool plug-ins available which will split a picture up and render it in seperate parts, then splice it back together at the end. It sounds like exactly what you were doing but automated

If you're using Poser though I don't know how to help you rofl.. I try not to use Poser if I can help it, the renderer setup is very very slow

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

darthhell In reply to eliskan [2009-11-16 21:55:07 +0000 UTC]

Yes. 3dsmax is what I use. And that is exactly what I was doing, except this was to the extreme, we're talking a 20x20 sq at a time.

So a plug in like that would be awsome. Do you have a link, or what it's called and I could look it up, that would be perfect. Thanks.

eliskan In reply to darthhell [2009-11-16 22:52:29 +0000 UTC]

Okay! I think I found it, mind you I haven't experimented with it myself but it should work

[link]

That website has a ton of plugins too which are very useful, I've been trying to learn MAXScript so I found the site pretty much instantly (first google result for maxscript lol)

Hopefully this helps I love your work so maybe this'll allow you to keep these awesome displacement maps going!

Haha I know what you mean I've been using it for like two years and it seems like I barely know the half of it!

So do you use Poser to set up your characters or do you do all that in Max as well?

darthhell In reply to eliskan [2009-11-17 21:50:02 +0000 UTC]

No I use poser for the posing. But I'm starting to teach myself the skin and bones in max, so maybe soon it will all be max.

You know, there is one thing that is glaring and a shame that is missing. Ummm, much like Talon... the man has an extensive tattoo collection on most visible parts of his body. It is missing, and it shows...

Outside of that, there are a few small nits that I see here. Mostly to do with the armour, and the lighting on it... there is too much shining off of the armour, and the coral look is a little off... And he's still got a natural arm (one of them and one of his eyes are Voug bio-tech replacements, here the arm is the most noticeable).

Outside of that, I'm going to fire some Geese ni Mustard... you defiantly have the badass look right. The sabres seem really good (lacking only a bit of detailing), and that pose is fitting.
Another nice render, a shame that it took so long to do.

darthhell In reply to JamesSarrow [2009-11-16 17:00:47 +0000 UTC]

Ahhh, I didn't realize that about his tattoos. I knew he had the face ones, but I wasn't sure about the body. I also didn't know about the bio-tech arm, but the eye (although not so noticable in this image) is a blue one.

I need to find some more reference pictures for the tattoos.

Thanks for the comment, I hope I can figure out the problem with the rendering because I would really like to refine it and use it more.

JamesSarrow In reply to darthhell [2009-11-16 18:53:42 +0000 UTC]

It seems to be policy of the OneSith for being a member, the only two that falls out of this line is Cade and Krayt but then Cade was a member-in-training the time, even then he didn't come out of that without getting inked (it's just not the extensive tattoo collection like the others, he just got a few new marking on his shoulders next to the Rak tats), and Krayt's are mostly markings from his days as a Tusken Raider.

About the references, good luck to you. You'll only have is the comics to go by (from my knowledge)... through if I can make a suggestion, start looking at Legacy 15 onward. And note, there is nothing on the bio-arm.
The eye, by the way, is odd.. it's an off-white with a gray (like his armour) iris and off-white centre... again Legacy 15 will help (it's one of the few times that you really see that eye, and the details to it).

Well, this is a great starting point. Most of the visual is right... save the reflection on the armour. I am sure you'll fine the perfect middle with time...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

darthhell In reply to JamesSarrow [2009-11-16 20:31:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, there doesn't seem to be any other reference material other than the comic. I was looking at the first or 2nd one as I was modeling this, I'll have to look through the ones you suggested for some refining.

Another problem is everytime you see him, there seems to be differences (I'm sure that's because the complexity of the outfit would be hard to get spot on everytime one draws it)

JamesSarrow In reply to darthhell [2009-11-17 03:25:20 +0000 UTC]

Well, as it turns out, it wasn't Jan... it was Terese nielsen [link]

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

JamesSarrow In reply to darthhell [2009-11-17 02:57:22 +0000 UTC]

Well, hold for a moment... when I was looking at him for a moment... I have noticed something, the markings aside from his face, are not tats. My bad on that, it was hard to distinguished... they are an outgrouth of the bio-tech, which has been slowly killing him, popping out of his skin like boils or rock-like blisters.
At times they look like tats, but they are not. I am sorry for that.

That is true, but out side of his outline, he is a visually complex to draw (I would assume). So inconsistencies with him are a little rampant with the other artists involve with Legacy. Mostly, he is one of Jan Duursema's characters (like Talon) so her images of him dictate his appearance quite a bit and bring some measure of consistency. If I remember, she is a member here at dA.

darthhell In reply to JamesSarrow [2009-11-17 15:57:02 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, those growths. I'm working on a way to duplicate those next. I'm flipping through those issues right now, they do give some good closeups of his bad skin, and also that eye, that should be easy to replicate.

Ah yes, Terese, I have her on my watch list. Although I couldn't find one of her images of Krayt. That would have been an awsome source for reference.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JamesSarrow In reply to darthhell [2009-11-19 19:15:03 +0000 UTC]

Not what I meant, I mean that I through that Jan was a dA member. It wasn't, it was Terese... to be honest, I am not sure if she has done Krayt. As far as she has show, she hasn't.

Outside of Jan's references in the comic (mostly in 0 comic) and one other in the Jedi V. Sith book, I can't see of others. So you are a bit on your own.

I will say this much, I would not mind if Terese worked on another Talon or others of the OneSith. She seems to get the characters well (outside of Luke)

Sooooo after your HAL ignored you in such a superb manner, I suppose he didn't even take the time to tell you the magic number and let you dream of little 4s and 2s? Ah, maybe your computer and mine should meet

This picture is an awesome realization. I can help but stare and stare again at the realism of the armor, it must have taken hours and hours of modelling!
I love the lighting effect too, this is one of your masterpieces!
