Description
Lara Croft’s quest to recover the Scion had taken her from South America to Europe, where she pursued the second fragment in a series of ancient Roman ruins. Presently she entered a large cavern, where she could see a massive statue, or at least its lower legs. If the rest of it existed, it was embedded above the ceiling of the cavern. Broken chunks of stone littered the ground, and there was also a very large stone hand apparently broken off from the statue. The base of the statue proclaimed “MIDAS” in massive engraved lettering. Lara recalled the story of Midas, a king whose wish to turn everything he touched into gold had become his greatest nightmare, eventually even turning his daughter into nothing more than a lifeless golden statue. She mused on the dilemma, thinking that she might not mind such ability, as long as the touch had to be accompanied with intent. Alas, unlike some stories, Lara knew this one to be simply a myth. Even if there was a man with such a cursed power, it couldn’t possibly extend to a mere facsimile in stone.Lara explored the cavern keenly, leaving not a single stone unturned, for she always seemed to find first aid kits and ammunition magazines in the strangest places, and she certainly needed them with all the feral animals she encountered. She finished her search atop a ledge next to the enormous stone feet. There didn’t seem to be anything interesting in this particular cavern, so it would be prudent to move on to the next. Rather than risk a sprained ankle from jumping straight down, Lara decided to break her fall by hopping over to the stone hand first. Graceful as ever, she landed gently atop the hand…
Her feet suddenly felt terribly cold, then completely numb. Alarmed that she might have somehow landed badly and injured her feet, Lara looked down, only to see a cloud of golden flashes swirling about her, and her feet seemingly covered in gold…no…they were gold! Panicked, Lara tried to walk. Her feet were just as heavy as she might have expected gold to be, and she could barely lift them. Worse, she could only just balance herself with no sensation coming from her feet. The chilling feeling abruptly started working its way up her legs, followed again by total numbness. Lara watched helplessly as inch after inch of her legs glowed briefly, then hardened into solid gold. Her left leg had hit the stone first, and so the transformation was working its way up slightly ahead of the right leg. Soon both her knees were transformed, the weight of her golden legs disabling her from even trying to swing her legs at the hips.
Two thoughts crossed Lara’s mind at that point. First, even if she could somehow get herself free from the hand of Midas, assuming that would stop the transformation, what then could she do? She’d be trapped in the middle of a very isolated ruin, where likely nobody else would explore for centuries, with useless gold legs. She would starve to death before she could drag herself out. Secondly, with a sense of resignation, Lara wondered if, when somebody did eventually come exploring, they would ultimately find her increasingly valuable remains. Would they meet the same fate? Would she eventually be the mysterious artifact comprising the centerpiece of some museum in the future?
Whatever the future held, the transformation continued inexorably, Lara’s thighs now almost completely converted. All she could do was watch herself succumb to the same fate as what she now realized had probably been the very real daughter of King Midas.

If that had happened to me and there was absolutely no way of escaping...I would flip off the freaking hand and let myself solidify that way ensuring that anyone who came across my golden corpse would know that I went down with fight in me. And it would be hilarious.

Actually, those ruins were Greek, not Roman. Excellent work, on both story and picture!

Good point, I probably should have realized that from it being a palace of Midas. That's a side effect of typing the stories immediately after I finish a drawing without any time to rest or fact check.

I really hate for her die this way...
I had an idea for a short fan-fic where she lands awkwardly on the stone hand, and falls off. Unfortunately, she sprains her left ankle, and even more unfortunately, it has turned to gold (along with some of her shin). Her right foot is okay, due to the thick soles of her boots, which only touched for a second before falling over. She hops/drags/limps her way out back to civilization...

Nah...probably has to be in Atlantis. In the same death Lara was shot by a flying Atlantean while sliding down a slope to evade a lava boulder...then she fell into a lava pit WITH SPIKES, and the boulder rolled in after her.
These Atlanteans don't mess around.

Oh wow... this is EXCELLENT! I must say, i am very impressed. its also quite creative! Not very many people copy this scene. Usually she's eaten by something.
However, i would LOVE to see a series of pics where Lara Croft is tied up, forced to marry Amanda Everett, and is eaten by Amanda during the honey moon...

I love this one. I'd go see a Tomb Raider movie if they turned Lara to gold on the big screen.

Oh yeah, the Midas hand thingus. Heh, I remember you rambling about that in a forum once. Some kind of post as to the character you wish to see impailed best, or something along that line.

Very nice, but the gold doesn't looks like gold. What if it's the Fools' Midas Statue, which turns its victims into Fools Gold?

I really like the gold effect but the hand, hmm. It looks more real than morta and also seems to start from no way. You need to intergrate it with the wall. (sorry, I'm not a very good critic, mostly 'coz I can't draw)
I like the concept though. Kind of creepy to think you could just turn into gold.

Thanks. I actually resorted to finding a picture of a gold statue and eyedropper-ing some of the colors to figure out how to get a reasonable gold color. The little specks flying around are just a bunch of brushes of the airbrush with line mode on, with a blob of airbrushing in the middle, then shaded a bit.

If you're familiar with *DrewGardner , he has a great one of Lara underwater fighting (and losing) to an octopus. I can't say I've got any such plans myself though, as underwater is a bit hard for me to figure out at the moment.

Nothing screams hot like perky nipples just before you die!
I'd work on the hand some though, it doesn't fit much at all. And since this is the first of your work I've seen in a long while,

Thanks. I was actually thinking of just outlining the hand as I did the character, but for some reason I didn't. I guess I just didn't really care much about this one as much as I do with some of my other ones.
