Okay, so I'm confused to death. I remember that line from Kay and I remember being annoyed as heck because... well... a gentleman always has dozens of reasons for carrying a handkerchief, most of which have nothing at all to do with his own nose... but... I don't get where this is going. And I want to understand because... well... I'm just obessive that way. Is part 2 someplace in your gallery or didn't it happen? Thanks (and yeah, he's cute as anything. Love the sheepish look in panel three...

Sorry it took so long for me to respond... stupid computer

The thought has long been in the back of my mind that I should finish this comic by posting "part 2". In fact, I'm almost done with it, and it should be up this week. It should answer most of your confusion... but to settle your mind for the time being, I'll make one point clear: despite the fact that Erik does not have the external cartilage called "the nose"... his mucus glands and smell receptors are still intact WAY inside the head. Not in the nose. Thus, I'm happy to discredit Susan Kay for her lack of insight.

YAY!! ::hates Susan Kay::

I'm SO glad. ::Hates her some more::

It was high time someone discredited her. Thank goodness! Anyway, I look forward to part 2. I MAY even have to deviant watch you so I don't miss it when it comes out. ::watches carefully::

oh. -wipes sweat- I'm glad you dislike her rendition of the book. I mean-- what was everyone thinking recommending that horrid monstrosity in the first place? SURE it had some good parts in it, but the writing's just awful at times and the plot gets so... well... either violent or inappropriate or just plain unfortunate for poor Erik. I mean, really... does he HAVE to have every single unfortunate event happen to him in the course of his sad and pathetic life here on earth? It made me ultimately depressed after I read it and I had a stomach ache (most likely an ulcer) from it as well.

Worst book ever.

Okay... maybe not the worst one EVER, but I agree with basically everything you've said here. Here's why /I/ hate it: [link]

You're right, though... I mean, Leroux made Erik's life unfortunate. Kay made it unbelievable. No one has luck that bad or TIMING that bad. I mean, COME ON! And yes, it made me sick as well. I'm re-doing it, actually... Writing what she SHOULD have written--a complete retelling complete with what really happened and Erik's side of the story in a fair and balanced way. Poor Erik... no one's heard his side of the story all this time!!

oh, I read the entire thing you wrote! And, really, what bugged me the most about S Kay's book you explained perfectly somewhere near the end of your little composition. The versions of Phantom that I cannot bear are the ones where Erik is not redeemed. Leroux had it perfect, and even ALW got it. Susan Kay... missed it in my mind. And-- if you don't mind me asking!-- are you a Christian? You sure sounded like you were on many points... I am as well, and that's also why I couldn't enjoy the ending to the book. It was just so-- stupid. Also why I hate the idea of a PotO sequel.

"It was horrifying. It gave me the most horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach" NO JOKE. That's EXACTLY, I mean, *EXACT-A-LY* what I felt every time after I read it. -shivers-

Wow!! What a GREAT message back!! I love conversations like these ones. I'm so impressed with you.

Let's see... No, I am not a Christian, though I did study Christianity for a period of about 15 years. I tried it but found that it was not the religion for me. But having been a part of it for so long and having been educated at a Catholic college as an English major and having many nuns as professors, I became quite adept at finding Christian themes in literature. And Leroux's POTO is so full of Christian themes that any educated person with knowledge of the religion SHOULD notice them. As for me myself, I'm Jewish now, and sadly, there weren't any Jewish themes to uncover in POTO... probably because Leroux himself was a practicing Catholic (as was Raoul, of course... probably Erik's parents were Catholic, too... the one small thing that Kay got correct).

As to the sequel, I totally disagree with what has been done in the "official" sequel, but I am not opposed to sequels in general. As a matter of fact, I've written one. My rough draft is posted at fanfiction.net. It contains both Christian and Jewish themes, as well as some references to Freudian psychology. I had a lot of fun with it. I may revise it for publication, but the revision process... well... is long and tedious.

Here's a link to my story. [link] I must warn you that even though most readers have given me kind remarks at the beginning, basically the beginning is quite lousy, but it gets much better. I hadn't written fiction in nearly 10 years when I began it, so I was rusty at the start. The chapters are short and the style is stilted. But again, it gets much better. And if you wanted to see Erik redeemed... Well... you may enjoy it.

I'm currently working on a prequel and a retelling to do what I WISH that Kay had done. I'll let you know when it's finished.

(Wow!! Look what a long message I wrote! I wonder if there's a record for longest DA post...)

I too feel that we are conversing very smoothly.

Huh! I very much embrace Jewish beliefs. So did you study Catholicism or all forms of Christianity? To be frank, I find attending a Catholic church to be quite redundant. I prefer a church more like mine where there is lively music to worship God with and regular messages that teach us how to live what we say. Every week it's different!

Oh yes. If Andrew had chosen a good theme for a sequel, hey. I'd be all for it. It's just the plot that bugs me.

How cool! When you are done, yes, please let me see what you have. I love intelligent fanfiction.

(Oh, believe me! Some of the comments I get are novels. Yours is nothing. )

Weee-eeelll.... When I was involved with Christianity, I had an idea of what Judaism was, and it turned out it was completely and totally different. I mean, yes, they are related... but... well... let's not go there on DA. It tends to cause issues, you know?

To answer your question, from age 8 until about 22 I was involved with the Lutheran Church, but I studied at a Catholic college from age 18-22, so there's some overlap. I married a man whose father and stepmother were Southern Baptist and whose mother and stepfather were Church of Christ. When I was in elementary school I attended a Wednesday evening program at an Assembly of God Church and I've always had friends of various different denominations. Even now, I study religions other than my own for intellectual purposes and to make sure my Christian foster children are actually learning not just saying they are something without knowing about it, so I was just reading out of the Christian gospels a couple of days ago.

Honestly, though, I do really like the Catholic services. I like repetition and routine. I mean, there's nothing wrong with changing up the songs, for example, but I loved the Lutheran liturgy and the fact that I knew all the tunes to all the prayers and such. And I like to have a prayerbook not, say, project the words on the wall. But that's just me.

No, no. You misunderstand. The fanfiction is done. I mean... it's complete. The "edited" version will be bound and published someday but at that point it will no longer be available as fanfiction. So, if you wish to read it for free, I would recommend reading it now. I mean, it'll be there for at least a year, so there's no rush, but the edited version won't be going to anyone but an agent. Or to the company, if I end up self-publishing.

I completely understand that there are many traditions and customs that Jewish people practice that I am unaware of, or just plain forget about... simply because I don't think they're relevant to me. But as I read the Bible (Torah etc.) you pretty much get all the important stuff. We both believe in God the Father, right? And I'm sure you've heard this a million times before, but I really do believe that Christianity is just a fulfillment of Judaism.

That's really cool. Saying it is different than believing it. Right on.

Oh, yes... they're simply beautifully organized and most of their doctrine (Catholic) I can agree on completely. Whenever I'm invited to a Catholic service by my friends, I feel that I'm in a safe place. It's all good.

I guess you can say my church (it's "interdenominational") is bordering on Pentecostal, but not quite. We simply follow God's word and want to care and love others as we love God. So we don't like to confuse people by always doing things out of the ordinary. Yet-- things are never the same at my church. -happy sigh-

Oh, I see! Sorry, my mistake. Well, c'mon then, where's the link? -anxious to read-

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BldngHrtCnsrvtv In reply to DarthxErik [2009-01-16 02:13:20 +0000 UTC]

Well, that's why I said... you know... we can just leave it at that... because Christians view Christianity as a fulfillment of Judaism, whereas the way Jews read the Scriptures, they don't say what Christians believe they say, so the way the NT reads (to me... I'm not saying anything if "fact" because I always seek not to offend) doesn't have anything to do with the prophesies are we read them. So... Yes, I've heard it a million times... but... Well... I've also been around a while and there was a time when I really believed that I believed in Christianity, but that changed. (And don't get me wrong here... I'm not suggesting that for anyone else... I'm merely demonstrating that anything can happen.)

Anyway, yes, we believe in G-d and we do call him "Avinu" which means "Our Father" but the connotation is different than it is in Christianity. But yes. Of course we believe in Him.

I typically don't attend the Catholic service because it DOES feel very awkward as a believing Jew. That's hard to explain so I won't try, but it feels odd. Even so, as I remember it, it was a very good place.

I thought I already SENT the link to my story. Sorry about that... Here it is now. I warn you in advance, though... it's LONG. [link]

I don't go unless I'm invited. he he. The buildings are always very beautiful, though.

Thank you! oh- shoot. I don't have an account on there so I can't view it. that's okay... I'll have to fix that.

Gah! No! I just sent you the wrong link. You don't need an FFN account to view. You don't even need one to REVIEW. You just... leave an anonymous comment. Here... try THIS link: [link]

Well, actually "Abba" is literally like "Dad" whereas Avinu is Father. (My children, for example, call my husband Abba, but they don't call him Avi.) We also call him Adonai (literally "The Lord" and HaShem (literally "The Name") and El Shaddai "The Almighty") But the letters yod-hey-vav-hey were never intended to be pronounced.

Well, I have a child who attends a Lutheran church and a child who attends a non-denominational church, but I don't have any Catholics right now. I DID send my Lutheran to a Catholic service on Christmas because I didn't want her to be alone and one of my close friends is Catholic... but I didn't go any of those times. The last time I was in a church for a service was YEARS ago... decades if you don't count weddings.

oh yes, i know about the whole Yahweh thing. pretty sad that the jewish people never retained the oral pronunciation for it somewhere... perhaps it's for the best?

he he he. long time. do you attend a synagogue?

btw: if you celebrate passover every year, that is so cool. A christian semetic friend of my family's came to our house a few years ago and did the whole works. The symbolism in every single element of the meal took me by surprise. It's really a beautiful tradition that I wish more people participated in.

BldngHrtCnsrvtv In reply to DarthxErik [2009-01-17 04:02:43 +0000 UTC]

The story doesn't get really good until about chapter 54... I was warming up after 10 years of not writing, so the beginning is weak. I hope you'll bear with it long enough to get to the good parts.

I think that the majority of Jewish people did not know how to pronounce yod-hey-vav-hey even back then. Only the high priest knew, and even he did not utter it aloud except for on Yom Kippur the holiest day of the year. And he uttered INSIDE the Temple WITHIN the holiest of holies, so no one heard him at all. It seems it was passed generation to generation through the priestly family. (Makes me wonder if the Cohens or the Levis secretly still know it and just want tell the rest of us who are merely Yisroel...)

Yes, but not as regularly as every Shabbos, no. That probably sounds odd since my membership is with Chabad Lubavitch and chassidim are very devout, but I came from a Reform congregation and only recently became interested in the Chassidic movement. Beginning in February in conjunction with a class I am taking with the rabbi I will probably attend twice a month at minimum.

Yes, I've done Passover every year since my husband and I have been together, which is eight and a half years, so nine Passovers. Usually we attend a community Seder at the JCC, but I think three years I've gone all out here at home.

When your friend did "the whole works" do you mean JUST the meal (just, I say! Ha! Just! When I bet it took hours and hours...) or the WHOLE bit where you had to burn all your chometz and go searching through the house with a candle and a feather? THAT part is loads of fun too. If you liked Passover you'd love Purim... And here in San Antonio we have a really spectacular Chanukah on the River production where the rabbi invites all the local synagogues (I believe we're up to eight total now) and anyone from the community and they have Jewish music and food and a menorah lighting and perhaps best of all, the riverboat ride complete with a menorah in each boat and singing songs all the way.

quit over-apologizing! I'm sure it'll be great.

Yes, yes, you're right. Say! That'd make a great Da-Vinchi Code sequel! (only jesting... I never saw that movie and don't inted to. )

I used to go to the JCC all the time as a kid... we were members (though we weren't exactly jewish... lol). Actually, I'm almost half jewish genetically.

You know, I'm sure we did the whole entire thing, because I remember doing the thing with the feather. There were 4 glasses of wine we had to drink (well-- I got grape juice) etc. Purim's the celebration of Queen Esther and the deliverance of her people, right?

You live in San Antonio? How crazy is that! I was born there, and my family just went there on vacation a few weeks ago.

I hope so. DO let me know when you begin reading. If you could leave a review or two at FFN, I'd be thrilled.

Well, I THOUGHT about writing religious fiction about that, but not with any modern day families... more like Bible fanfiction, but that takes LOTS of research.

I haven't seen DaVinci code either and don't plan to, but my father read the book and really enjoyed it. My mother, who probably hasn't read a single book in her entire adult life, looked down on him for it, but I don't think there was anything wrong with reading it just to see what it said. It didn't change him.

Our membership at the J is probably only 1/2 Jews and the rest just people who want to use the pool and think the Y is too far away.

The four cups of wine is part of the dinner/Seder. And there's a part of the dinner where you go look for things, but the part with the feather is supposed to happen the night before.

Yes, that's Purim. Dressing up in costumes, booing and hissing during the megillah, and drinking until you can't tell the difference between "Blessed be Mordechai" and "Cursed be Haman"

Yes, I'm in San Antonio. Where do you live now?

I will.

It does. What kind of Bible fiction are you thinking about?

I'm sure the Da Vinchi code wouldn't change anyone who isn't outright stupid about what they believe in, but it still seems like a pretty big waste of my time...

yes, how cool.

Sorry! Can't share that info. Not that I think you're a stalker, but you never know who could be reading this, either.

Thanks! I'll look forward to it.

It'd be something like... the story of the Exodus from Miriam's point of view. But I'm not committed to doing it or anything... it was just one idea I happened to have.

Well, I'm not saying my dad didn't take it a BIT seriously, and he's not stupid either. I just mean he didn't run out and found a church based on it. He basically said "Hmm... of this stuff is interesting. Maybe even possible. It was certainly a good book. Too bad we'll never know for certain until we die. Oh well." and went on with his life, you know? Like a regular person would.

Yeah. I enjoy it.

Well, right. That's why if you asked me for my longitude and latitude I'd say no. But that's hardly the same as saying "Minnesota" for example. I mean... if someone came to San Antonio to stalk me, I'd laugh my butt off because they'd NEVER find me in a million years.
