Description phew. This represents months of work, really. After reading the book several times, one needs more than a mental picture of how everything is laid out. So... I got together with a friend of mine and figured out at least one way Erik's lair could be arranged... and I rather like it like this. If you read any scene in the book that takes place in his lair, I think it matches up with this set up...

But I'm posting this so everyone can give me an A-OK. Once I feel like this is the plan I want to stick with, I can begin long-awaited comic strips and such.

Please comment, and don't be afraid to challenge my ideas... they are merely ideas! I want to make my future Leroux-based drawings as accurate as possible, so I would appreciate criticism and any other ideas you may have. One thing I especially fear is that I don't have the right furniture in some areas... I tried to stay close to the time period... but... I don't know how to set up furniture.

Here are some extra notes:

Erik and Christine can be seen from a bird's eye view (or rather, a rat's?) about to enter the drawing room.
The gray floor you see in the hallway and Erik's bathroom is NOT stone/cave floor. It is gray marble.
The yellow floor in the drawing room represents carpet, as does the red floor in Erik's bedroom and the Louis-Philippe room. The brown floor in the dining room is wood. The pale floor in Christine's bathroom is tile. I should have made square tiles...
And of course, there are secret passageways and such that I don't plan on drawing out. Even I cannot begin to fathom all of Erik's "secrets"....

**UPDATE**: I just added a kitchen. It's tough drawing furniture from a rat's view, but there's a large counter top with a sink, shelves with kitchenware inside of them, and a stove/oven.

Although lately I read my *unabridged* version of PotO and I think I may have to edit this one more time...

Well, I think it's just about exactly right. I mean, the Louis-Philippe room is right next to the torture chamber, so that Christine can go up the little ladder and see in through the little window... We knew there had to be a dining room because Erik waits for Christine in "the dining room by the lake." They're entering through a door that leads to the drawing room, which is how it happened the first time Erik took her there, and it was very bright, so there are lots of candles in there (though, Erik MAY have had gaslights. The rest of the Opera did, so why not tap into it? (That is THE ONLY intelligent thought it Kay's whole book, I think...) I love Erik's room and I do always envision it being in close proximity to the other room... though... I usually picture them as being on the same side of the hallway, though that's not necessarily true. As a matter of fact, I think that, though instinctively we all place Erik's room NEAR the other rooms, it probably wasn't in Leroux's mind, because when Christine comes out of her room she goes to the dining room. She doesn't remark on any other rooms at that time. Later, after eating, she is taken to Erik's room, so that room is probably in pretty close proximity to the dining room. She comments on how funereal it is, how much it upsets her, but she doesn't say anything about it being near her own room or anything. It occurs to me that if it was very nearby, she might have been still more disturbed at that. Of course, I could be wrong. She simply didn't manage to repeat that to Raoul... or Leroux simply didn't write EVERYTHING she said... whatever. I think the house is lovely this way. I WOULD love to have the secret passageways, but I understand your hesitation to delve into that realm. But then, don't you suspect that there are passages within the walls, that Erik can move within the walls between the rooms so as to hear inside the rooms without being seen? I suppose the walls could be thicker to represent that, yes? I mean, don't redraw it or anything. It was just a thought.

Anyway, suggested I come over here and visit with you because I'm always struggling with Erik's layout and trying to figure out what is possible. Actually, in my most recent fanfiction, I've made the house WAY bigger because... well... because Erik needed those extra rooms in that version. Long story. I am going to have to decide some things about the layout at some point. Interested in helping me out, by any chance?

Exactly right? YES!! -triumphant dance-

wow! thanks for the long comment... I agree on pretty much all your points. It'd take a LOT of candles to make the drawing room BRIGHT so gas lights will be needed. Thanks muchly for that tidbit. Larger walls... sounds like a plan. Yes, I won't redraw it, but it sounds like a plan.

Oh, that's nice of her! Sure, why not? But it seems to me that you have a pretty good handle on his lair... What would you need my help for? Well, anyhow, I'd be glad to help with whatever I can!

:snark:

Are you familiar with my latest fic? It's... gosh... it's... I don't know how to say it without being misleading. I don't want to call it AU because it isn't. It follows the Leroux timeline EXACTLY and clears up all the things Leroux got wrong, which happened because... well... he mostly didn't ask the right people and the only person who knew anything--the Persian--lied to cover for a friend.

So... the building of the lair happens entirely differently--not during the construction of the Opera as Leroux claimed, and not for the reasons Leroux claimed, either. And everything else that happened... also happened... but not in the way or for the reasons that Leroux claimed. And as I said... some additional rooms were needed. It throws the floorplan that I think of when I stick to canon out entirely and leaves me... well, I'd say "hopeless" except my readers don't seem to particularly care about the layout, so I guess no one will really notice, right?

I think I read one or two chapters when you gave me the link, (and I think I even bookmarked it on my browser... gosh, that was a while ago!) and it was an extremely well-written fic!

I don't usually read fanfiction, but there are exceptions to that rule! Anyway... yah, no one will notice I think. Leroux doesn't go into extreme detail when it comes to Erik's house, so you could add rooms and play around with it a lot!

BldngHrtCnsrvtv In reply to DarthxErik [2009-06-20 16:24:59 +0000 UTC]

Right. (No, I wasn't asking you to read it... just explaining why... it would... change the floorplan. But thanks. I'm glad you did look at it a bit.)

Yes... What I notice is that MOST folks who read fanfiction don't care if stuff is "exactly right" or not because that's the point--it's fanfiction and therefore we can change stuff. But I'm a stickler for accuracy. I want it exactly a certain way. I want to be able to insert additional scenes that don't detract from canon.

This is amazing!! I love it! I never really had the patience to sit down and imagine a layout for Erik's house,(though I wanted to at some point) but then again I only read the book once and didn't really pay attention to the layout.
But it makes a lot of sense like this, and I always think of this layout in our rpg's now. XD Makes things a lot easier to imagine.

So... I'm quite dumb. What exactly defines the Louis Philippe room?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarthxErik In reply to bophie1 [2009-06-15 14:26:55 +0000 UTC]

what defines it? hmm...

Well, firstly, it's the room that Christine finds herself in after she first arrives at Erik's lair. There are brief descriptions of some of the furniture and features of this room. Christine mentions that Erik established that it was her room. It's also the room where the "final lair" scene takes place, as it is adjacent to the torture chamber. It's a pretty important room for the final chapters of the book...
