Description phew. This represents months of work, really. After reading the book several times, one needs more than a mental picture of how everything is laid out. So... I got together with a friend of mine and figured out at least one way Erik's lair could be arranged... and I rather like it like this. If you read any scene in the book that takes place in his lair, I think it matches up with this set up...

But I'm posting this so everyone can give me an A-OK. Once I feel like this is the plan I want to stick with, I can begin long-awaited comic strips and such.

Please comment, and don't be afraid to challenge my ideas... they are merely ideas! I want to make my future Leroux-based drawings as accurate as possible, so I would appreciate criticism and any other ideas you may have. One thing I especially fear is that I don't have the right furniture in some areas... I tried to stay close to the time period... but... I don't know how to set up furniture.

Here are some extra notes:

Erik and Christine can be seen from a bird's eye view (or rather, a rat's?) about to enter the drawing room.
The gray floor you see in the hallway and Erik's bathroom is NOT stone/cave floor. It is gray marble.
The yellow floor in the drawing room represents carpet, as does the red floor in Erik's bedroom and the Louis-Philippe room. The brown floor in the dining room is wood. The pale floor in Christine's bathroom is tile. I should have made square tiles...
And of course, there are secret passageways and such that I don't plan on drawing out. Even I cannot begin to fathom all of Erik's "secrets"....

**UPDATE**: I just added a kitchen. It's tough drawing furniture from a rat's view, but there's a large counter top with a sink, shelves with kitchenware inside of them, and a stove/oven.

Erik: Sora, I'm going to have to move your room to the... er... torture chamber!! -evil grin-

Me: oh dear...

Me: ._. didn't he just buy those?

Erik: My new drapes. *french cursing* Ah... Erik is merely saying that he prefers to have you stay... out doors! There's a quiet little forest that I own! Why not reside in it? Careful now, it can get a bit hot in there, so don't wear anything too heavy!

Erik: Fine, Erik-- I will stop. But only if Sora stops burning my curtains.

Me: Isn't referring to Sora as Sora instead of adressing her directly still talking in third person?

Erik: No, I believe that's something else.

and wouldn't it be a bat's point of view? a rat is closer to the ground...while a bat hangs from the ceiling?

I just don't see Erik as a prolific cook. Probably the most he does would be reheating chicken, since it probably would've gotten cold from the journey down... He steals most of his food, right? And he doesn't eat much, anyhow. There's kitchens, shops and cafes throughout the Opera House... If he ever needs something, I'm guessing he snatches some baguettes, meat and vegetables and wolfs it down.

The huge closet makes me smile. I think he needs a place to put all the fancy costumes he must periodically steal from Carlotta!

Also, I has so happy that you remembered to draw in the Torture Room's "Viewing Room". I was afraid you would forget that small detail! But yay!

I had always envisioned the whole set-up a lot smaller, but now that I see the way you lay it out, it makes better sense (and is more awesome for Erik!)

Nicely depicted. But didn't Christine have her own room? Or was that only in Kay's book?

Christine's room = Louis-Philippe room.

For the most part this looks good to me, though the organ in Erik's bedroom appears not to be large enough:

"Then I saw the keyboard of an organ which filled one whole side of the walls. . . ."

(Yay Project Gutenberg!)

You could leave it where it is, just make it larger (think ginormous cathedral organ and all the attendant pipes and cabinets and whatever, not just the part that houses the keyboard - google pics of organs. You'll be amazed), move his desk across the room to the opposite (southern) wall and scootch it closer to the closet door, and put the (music stand?), candelabrum and small bookcase?/curio cabinet? where you originally had the desk.

And to purely please MY sense of aesthetics, I think you ought to pivot the Louis-Philippe bathroom so that it's oriented vertically to the overhead view, not horizontally. It seems kind of odd, sticking out to the side the way it does. It would balance the appearance of the "back" (top portion of the layout) of the house a bit more evenly.

And I just have to laugh at the idea of a cellar in the fifth cellar.

oh dear, you're right! He needs something massive ( Thanks a lot, Gerik, for confusing me by having a smallish organ in your lair!!) Thanks for pointing that out... I'll fix it in the near future...

You know? I was JUST thinking about doing that to the bathroom. Who in their right mind walks into a bathroom that's set up like that? So I'll fix that too...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mominator In reply to DarthxErik [2009-06-10 18:12:17 +0000 UTC]

Here's wikipedia's "pipe organ" entry:

[link]

And don't blame Gerik's organ. It's FAR larger than the stage version.

I think the layout of Christine's bathroom is just fine, I just don't like the way it sticks out away from the rest of Erik's home.

And if you don't cave in to my demands, I'll have to either smack you with my Punjab frying pan . . .

. . . or live with it.

Wow! Your layout is almost exactly how I pictured Erik's house to look like!
The only big difference is that in my mind I've always pictured Erik's bedroom to be were the drawing room is and the drawing room where the bedroom is. But besides that it's almost identical to what I have always seen in my head! Crazy!

*As she whips out her book and starts to read it to see if the layout is correct*

I really can't find anything wrong with this layout! It fits with all the book's description and there are just no mistakes. (Unless my eyes aren't searching hard enough.) The only little thing that was hard to spot is the door between the Drawing Room and Dining Room. Is there supposed to be a door there? I didn't know if is was just a entry way with no door or what.

Your friend and you did a wonderful job planning this out! Faving right away!
