Description
phew. This represents months of work, really. After reading the book several times, one needs more than a mental picture of how everything is laid out. So... I got together with a friend of mine and figured out at least one way Erik's lair could be arranged... and I rather like it like this. If you read any scene in the book that takes place in his lair, I think it matches up with this set up...But I'm posting this so everyone can give me an A-OK. Once I feel like this is the plan I want to stick with, I can begin long-awaited comic strips and such.
Please comment, and don't be afraid to challenge my ideas... they are merely ideas! I want to make my future Leroux-based drawings as accurate as possible, so I would appreciate criticism and any other ideas you may have. One thing I especially fear is that I don't have the right furniture in some areas... I tried to stay close to the time period... but... I don't know how to set up furniture.
Here are some extra notes:
Erik and Christine can be seen from a bird's eye view (or rather, a rat's?) about to enter the drawing room.
The gray floor you see in the hallway and Erik's bathroom is NOT stone/cave floor. It is gray marble.
The yellow floor in the drawing room represents carpet, as does the red floor in Erik's bedroom and the Louis-Philippe room. The brown floor in the dining room is wood. The pale floor in Christine's bathroom is tile. I should have made square tiles...
And of course, there are secret passageways and such that I don't plan on drawing out. Even I cannot begin to fathom all of Erik's "secrets"....
**UPDATE**: I just added a kitchen. It's tough drawing furniture from a rat's view, but there's a large counter top with a sink, shelves with kitchenware inside of them, and a stove/oven.

thanks!
you know, I was thinking of adding a door to the drawing room (In the book it describes Erik crawling out of the room and to his bedroom, slamming the door behind him...) but I decided I needed more open doorways. There's a break in the wall there, in case you can't see it. Do you think I should add a door? I wouldn't take much time...

Maybe a double door. I always imagined a glass double door there.

thanks. um-- the Louis-Philippe room is referred to as Christine's room, isn't it? And I'm currently adding a kitchen. thanks for pointing that out!
sweet! You should post it!

Yes that is true I normally separate it out, but yes it is. It does look cool though. Mine is still in major sketch forum I'd have to edit it a lot.

OH MY GOSH! You're my new hero. I love this! And I think that the lines of tile in Christine's bedroom would just make things too confusing. However, I'm kinda sad that the stairway to look down into the torture chamber isn't here. The book's description confused me, so how would you have this look?
Overall, I absolutely love this!!! It's officially how I'll imagine it, just because it's so perfect!

thanks!
I was referring to the bathroom (that's a tub in there, not a bed!) Christine's room is the Louis-Philippe room.
The stair way is in the Louis Philippe room... I just did some stone stairs in the top left hand corner. Does that look bad? I was a bit confused by that part as well...

oh darn, I knew I forgot something.
But I struggle with that. I just can't picture Erik cooking with an apron and all that jazz. But maybe you're right. He needs at least a stove and some kitcheny supplies...
Do you recommend appending a kitchen to the dining room, between it and the food cellar?

RipperBlackstaff In reply to DarthxErik [2009-06-09 20:55:28 +0000 UTC]
I say, move the food cellar to the left above the room drawing room and put the kitchen between the cellar and torture chamber, so that it communicates with the dining room.

This is sort of actually how I always pictured Erik's lair while writing fan fiction. I never based it on the book, though, and don't have a great mind for remembering details in books even after reading them 3 times, so I can't offer any critique. From what I can see, this is an excellent layout and I'd love to see some of those comic strips!

awesome! thanks.
umm... You know, I thought he needed some space to keep not just his suits, capes, shirts, shoes, masks (the normal stuff we imagine Erik keeping) but he could also keep costumes, weaponry and valuable possessions in some boxes on shelves and stuff... I just imagine a space like that in my mind. What do you think?

hmm, that makes sense but I was thinking that he would keep his weapons in his torture chamber so that Christine would not get into them when he took her into his room. He would never allow her to go in there willingly...

DarthxErik In reply to Soccerfan217 [2009-06-09 20:46:40 +0000 UTC]
I recall one lasso on the tree... but Raoul and Daroga didn't stumble upon a pile of weaponry while stumbling through the "forest"!
Well, of course he wouldn't keep all his weapons in plain sight (In case Christine DID go into his closet...) He'd naturally keep everything like that UNDERNEATH the closet. All he'd have to do is swing the trapdoor up and "ta da!" there's his rope and swords. I really don't know. Is that illogical?

didn't he keep his weapons in the bag o' life and death? I remember something of a bag Christine mustn't touch...Maybe I was dreaming

DarthxErik In reply to morguefortheliving [2011-07-10 21:01:57 +0000 UTC]
I think he kept the keys to his entire house in the bag of life and death. It's sort of a parody of the Blackbeard tale, where the girl finds the keys to blackbeard's house and opens the room he made her swear she'd never enter. When she enters, she finds the bodies of all his previous wives that he killed. I think blackbeard ends up trying to kill the girl but i think she escapes. Anyway, Erik calls his keys the bag of life and death because he's trying to make sure Christine knows that his house contains many secrets and that he's not afraid of killing her if she betrays him...?

Perhaps, but he had a rather good chance when she pulled the mask off of him, even under his ungovernable anger she made her hurt him then he hurt her...He almost strangled her, but he didn't...
As for the keys bit, I may be getting the story messed up with others, but I cannot truly remember what he put in the bag...I think this answer with come with rereading POTO or checking out wiki..or something along that nature.

good point-but then again they were dellusional and not exactly looking for weapons when they were going through there...
Hmm, if he built a door underneath his closet wouldn't the lake's water push up against it and rot the wood?

DarthxErik In reply to Soccerfan217 [2009-06-09 20:56:16 +0000 UTC]
I really don't know... it's not like he built his house on an island.
Come to think of it, Erik didn't really BUILD his house thinking Christine or anyone for that matter would pop in and scold him for storing weapons. So scratch the trap door idea. I say he keeps them where he likes, but out of plain sight. That way he can snatch them when he needs to, but Christine won't notice anything immediately.
So in conclusion, is it wrong for him to have a closet that big? See-- I thought the dresser in his bedroom (on the very left) wouldn't be enough room for all the attire he owns. So I thought a closet would be nice. But is it a bit vain for Erik? He can't keep more than just a few suits... or can he?

Don't forget that people wore more articles of clothing than they do now, so having a larger storage space might not be so out of the ordinary.
Though, since Erik is described as wearing evening dress ALL the time, I suppose he wouldn't have morning suits, day suits, afternoon suits, or whatever different outfits men of society used to wear, and thus would NOT need a large storage space.
Then again, since it appears there are no cabinets in the bathrooms, he's GOT to have a place to store all those towel and bed sheets. Not to mention cleaning supplies, tools (such as saws for cutting through heavy chains), and the various ingredients required for recreating toad vocalizations in the human throat.
Yet on the other hand, I'm not sure people used closets in those days to store clothing. Wardrobes, yes. Closets? I THINK they're more recent, but you'll have to google the history of closets, 'cause I'm too lazy.
Or heck, maybe he just has lots and LOTS of red ink, blank music paper, and false noses to store.
Barb
P.S. His Punjab lassos would take up very little room. They're made from "catgut" - as are the strings of violins and other stringed instruments.

good point! just as I thought!
ugh... I'm too lazy. he DOES have a wardrobe in his room... but I don't think you can have a big enough wardrobe for that. You know, Erik was sort of a man that didn't belong to his time... he could've been the first to invent closets!

the closet makes perfect sense. and not as we might think of a closet today...simply another room off his own personal space in which to store his unmentionables...and of course he'd have a wardrobe with a selection of suits and capes to throw off anyone foolish enough to snoop around...this is a super idea, and you thought it out so well...
kudos!
