I'm always moved by this scene the most i believe. I was compelled to do this now, mostly because I recently realized one more detail of significance to this scene.
We all know that Erik is watching the monkey play "masquerade" as he sings along. One thing I never noticed though, (even though it's almost very obvious) is that he is not only looking at the monkey, but straight at his own mask.
Remember when Meg comes upon the monkey? The mask is sitting right next to it. For some reason, it never clicked for me.
But this last time that I watched the movie, I saw that his eyes gaze upon the little monkey, and then down further as he begins to sing the song. I just got utterly moved once again... and so, consequently, couldn't resist capturing that moment of sadness.

I also feel that the darkness in this picture is very deep. When I look at this picture, it makes me feel the emptiness and loneliness that he is experiencing.

Well, enjoy the sadness of it. My love goes out to poor Erik!
