Description A simple tutorial about the nature of the color picker. Nothing too in-depth, but I figure I might as well explain some of the intricacies of the dialog that some may not know about.

Lab color ftw!

Well, there are 256 values possible values for each RGB input (0-255), and, since there are three of them, taking 256 to the third power will yield the total number of possible combinations, hence the total number of colors.

Read the wikipedia article on color depth for some more information: [link]
The color depth that is visible on a monitor is 32-bit (24-bit True Color), and is stated in the article to be 16,777,216 colors.

If I use a color that's not "web-safe" will I breaked the interwebz?

darue In reply to Rubber-Ducky-FG [2010-06-17 19:34:42 +0000 UTC]

Yes.

It means that it won't show up as that color when viewed from really old computers.

and if you click and hold the Eyedropper (Color Sampler?) you can move around your screen (out of Photoshop) and pick any color you like ^^)
..just by the way

very useful, but can i ask what does 'colour is not web safe' mean?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

darue In reply to Mamainak [2009-12-08 19:49:53 +0000 UTC]

Meaning, the color is not one of the colors that appear when "Only Web Colors" is checked. Clicking on the icon will bring you tot he nearest web-safe color to what you had selected earlier.

Very nice!

But there's a slight mistake.
It says:

G: -Blue
B: -Green

None the less very informative .

P.S: yes, Lab colour ftw .

What I did was take 2553. What am I missing?

VPellen In reply to darue [2009-12-08 03:04:08 +0000 UTC]

256 cubed, not 255. 0-255.
