Description

  Among the rolling foothills of the valley, a large herd of wild mustangs grazed the lush grasses with vigor. A recent storm had brought much needed rains to the summer parched lands and the foliage had exploded in its wake. A strong wind remained after the weather had passed, providing the horses some relief from the biting insects and heat. It was good times for the wild horses, and it showed in their relaxed behavior.

     A stout, brown spotted stallion lifted his head from a patch of delicious clover, taking a moment to gaze upon the herd as he chewed. His mind wandered along with his rovering eyes, taking the time to appreciate the collection of horses in the herd. A herd he hoped to call his own very soon. Damon smiled at the thought, reaching down to pull out another greedy mouthful of greenery as he continued his pondering.

     Some of the mares and most of the foals respected him as their lead stallion, all he needed to do now was get the rest of the mares on board with the idea. The seeds had already been planted, in more ways than one. Damon smirked at the thought as he let his gaze land on the mares carrying his progeny. Sahar and Jessabelle had been the first and were already showing early signs of pregnancy. Damon’s eyes sought out the most prized of all his conquests, the herd’s lead mare, Estraya. The other two mares were just bonuses, while Estraya was his true prize. With time he hoped others would follow suit, but for now he was satisfied.

     Damon snorted softly before returning to his grazing, his mind still wandering. He had little to worry about these days compared to his time as a lone bachelor. The herd was healthy and strongly guarded, between Naomi, Estraya, Finn and himself, the chances of them losing mares to roving bachelors was slim to none. Predators rarely even tried their luck with so many eyes around to spot them - though the pack of wolves earlier in the season had been exceptionally brazen.

     Yes, there was no need to be hasty with his plans. Already the opposition to his leadership was waning, their hard stance was crumbling day by day. Those that tried to remain neutral had started commenting that the current leadership had been working out well so far. Tension between the sides was still an issue, but it was starting to quiet down.

     The way Damon saw it, unless Ajax himself strolled in to take them back, the herd would be Damon's by the end of the summer. Any who still disagreed by then could see themselves out for all he cared. There was no room in his herd for-

     BARK BARK

     The stallion’s head shot up as his thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a canine. Much to his annoyance, it sounded to be getting closer. The stallion snorted, begrudgingly stepping away from his prime grazing spot to investigate the sound and likely drive off the mutt. What happened next was the last thing he ever expected to occur.
