This is awesome, I really enjoy the design and overall idea.

In the thumbnail though I thought the bee was actually part of the girl. It would have been sweet to see the bee head be a helmet and this bee body hanging off, almost like a balloon with wings. Just an idea, may be stupid but it interested me.

Other then that I want to say I really like the coloring. You are very talented.

I was deeply disappointed when I clicked for full view. In the thumbnail it looks like the hornet is a part of her costume, thus making it one of the largest and most intricate hats ever conceived.

Ah. Thank you. It's not watercolor (to this day, I just can't seem to control watercolor well enough to make a picture with it. It just winds up being a blotchy mess...)

You did make it with airbrushpaint?
It's so beautiful!

Cool stuff Don! I'm an avid Painter user. Mind if I ask what brushes you were using out of curiosity? Although I hardly ever do it, when I do there is a fun feeling of exploring and discovering how the different types of brushes will react upon contact of the canvas. I bet that you felt the same way as you were painting this .

Thanks, Ivan. No problem. I found some of C.Houghton's Brushes on Conceptart.org. The brushes I used were:

Just Plein Quick - Blocking out of major color fields, highlights
Sketchy Tendril Pencil - Lines, finer highlights
Just Add Water - general blending

how do you feel about the new brushes?

the concept is interesting; what if the female character had also like a transluscent cape, wing-like, as well?

Oh, I love the brushes. They require a bit of a change in technique and overall workflow, but it's a pleasant change. I considered the wing cape thing, but then she'd remind me of one of the characters from DarkStalkers...
