Description

Night.

Surrounded by a blanket of fog two unique women were seemingly alone in a cemetery.

Alison Blaire, the mutant more commonly known as the Dazzler, aimed her hand beam at the ground below them.

The ground of a recently made grave.

"Here."  She said.

Susan Richards, the Invisible Woman, pointed her hand and made that particular patch of earth seemingly disappear. Obviously it was still there.  But it was now transparent.  Much like the fog in the immediate area.

Ali's light illuminated the coffin buried beneath. Sue concentrated and it became transparent as well.

And within the coffin was the bound Natasha Romanova. The avenging spy known as the Black Widow.

Dazzler, through sound absorption, had managed to home in on her heartbeat.

The sudden light startled the Widow. She heard the stories about near death experiences in which there was a bright light at the end of a tunnel.  Was it possible that it was all true?  And if the Almighty was waiting for her then SOMEbody had a lot of explaining to do.

But just as suddenly the light was gone. Once more she was encased in confined darkenss.

It had to be a hallucination.  The trick of an oxygen starved mind. Despite the bio-feedback, which slowed her heart and thus her breathing, the air was almost gone. And she was no closer to getting loose than she was when she first woke up in this cramped prison.

Suddenly the ground shook. Now she had to deal with an earthquake?

Sue formed a forcefield around the casket. At the same time the ground and the immediate fog became visible once again.

"Find some cover." She told Ali.

Dazzler simply created her own forcefield. A glowing wall of solid light between her and the grave.

"Go for it."

And with a thought the ground burst apart as the Black Widow's coffin-prison shot out and hovered in the air. Once the dirt stopped flying Dazz dropped her field. And once the coffin was safely on the ground the Invisible Woman dropped hers and then "dissolved" fog once again.

Dazzler rushed over and flipped open the coffin lid.

After peeling off the gag Ali asked, "You okay, 'Tasha"

Only one person can glow like that, the Widow thought. And the voice confirmed it. Then she saw Susan Richards standing behind her.

"D-Dazzler? Susan? How did you...?"

As Ali lasered Natasha's bonds Sue did the talking.

"Thank Jan. When you didn't show without calling she got concerned. And when you didn't answer your cell, or your Avenger ID, she knew something serious had to be happening.

"So she used her connection with the insect world to track you down. According to various 'witnesses' you were ambushed by two men. They tied you up and placed you in a van. You were taken to a cemetery, placed inside a coffin, and then buried alive.

"But we had no idea which cemetery. So we broke up into three teams to search all the graveyards in the area. Ali and I were lucky to hit a homer first time at bat."

After freeing Natasha from her restraints, and helping her to her feet, Dazzler said. "That reminds me. I should call the others and let them know we found you."

As Ali unclipped her cell phone and called the Wasp & She-Hulk, Sue asked, "What's going on, Natasha?"

The Black Widow sighed. "After all you've done for me I hate saying this. But it's classified."

It was the Invisible Woman's turn to sigh. She's had smug, self-important, government officials throw "Classified," "National Security" and "Need to know" into her face so many times in her career that she swore she'd strangle the next Federal prick that said it to her again. Especially that hyper-bitch, Maria Hill.

Yet the Black Widow was as much a government agent as she was a super hero. And she always managed to keep the two aspects of that identity separate. Out of respect for the super hero, and not really wanting to see the Widow's darker, dirtier side, all Susan said was...

"Fair enough."

Natasha could tell Sue was disappointed. But it WAS a classified matter. And, besides, she didn't want Sue and the others seeing her darker, dirtier, side either.

"Guys?" Dazzler said with her hand over her cell. "Hospital or hotel?"

"Hotel." The Widow answered. For R & R. Reequip and retaliate. She then turned back to Sue. "I'm afraid I'll have to bow out of the tour for a while. If I can return before it's over I will."

"I hope you can."

Ali rejoined them. "Since Wanda and Carol are Avengers Jan's gonna call them via their cards."

"Thanks, Ali." Sue replied.

"Guys." The Widow said. "I want to thank you all for what you've done for me tonight. I'm in your debt."

"Nonsense." Sue said back.

"What are friends for?" Ali added.

The Widow smiled. No more need be said.

And together the three members of the Miss America Foundation left the cemetery.

I wonder if it'll be 'classified' the next time she needs to be rescued.  I'm with Sue, someone saves your life classified shouldn't be an issue.

Excellent story .
Really like how Susan and Allie work together and use their powers in concert to save their friend Especially liked the part in which Alison immediately  homed  in on Natasha's   heart beat to make sure she was still alive.
And I was really impressed with the part of the story that gave us the Black Widow's POV from inside the coffin and tells us how she reacts to what is happening to her ( The unexpected explosion of light , her use of bio - feedback to make the oxygen last longer etc. ) In this part we get to see a strong woman dealing with an extreme situation . I thought this part was very well done . ( as an aside I hope my own writing gets to be as good eventually).
I thought that Jan's use of her connection to the insect world to locate and track their missing friend was an inspired bit of story construction and a clever and imaginative use of her powers .
Also I thought that mention of  the heroines  ongoing difficulties with the powers - that -be ( National Security , Need to Know  etc.) and especially the reference to Maria Hill as a " hyper bitch " was another inspired  bit of story construction.
Also I like the fact that your story makes the point that Sue and Allison were  only part of the big team that is out looking for their friend.
Finally  I really like how you story quietly demonstrates the friend ship , understanding and respect that the heroines share
Thank you for another great story.

"Powers in concert."   I always thought Ali and Sue would make a great duet.

I wanted to show Dazzler's versatility as a super heroine. And her DareDevil-like ability to home in on a certain sound seemed a natural way to go. And though she wasn't seen I always wanted Jan to be a part of this for the same reason. To show off HER versatility.  If she can shrink or grow then, just like her ex-husband, she should be able to communicate with insects as well.  And what better way to find the trapped Madam Natasha?

As for the "Classified" part.  I really only wanted to do Ali and Sue.  So I left that part of the story open ended. Since I don't own the characters there is no reason why someone else can't have Dan do a Black Widow story in which The Search played a small part. If they are so inspired.  You, for example, could do a story where the Widow and your favorite girl, General Roberta, could be working together on a case. Maybe throw in some other characters like the Miss Americas or Femforce or whatever.  Or not.

In either case I'm glad you liked the story.

I've always really liked how your stories went beyond the easy and the obvious  to  imaginatively showcase and demonstrate the ladies powers and abilities ( and how they ( your stories ) also make the point that so often it comes down to their intelligence and mental toughness and strength of character.
And again I did like the way you found a way for Jan to have a role in this story.
As to your suggestion /invitation to continue pick up and continue Jan's  story and to bring in my fave character ( General Roberta Strock ) and have the two work together . That is sorely tempting and the more I think about it the more I want (need) to do it . I would use the evenys of this story as a staring point Early idea - Jan consults with the General with whom she collaborating on this mission to find out how it was that she was discovered and captured . Suspecting a pervasive infiltration/ treason Roberta mandates a clandestine investigation . The ladies soon find themselves in over their heads   . In my wilder flights of fancy I consider expanding this adventure to have the FEM Force and the Miss America foundation working together( eventually  after some conflict / misunderstanding ) in a grand alliance  to find /assist / rescue their comrades
Of course I must complete my current project ( and take care of a promise ) before I proceed . But I appreciate you sparking the concept. And thank you again for a great story.

It would make for an interesting cross-over between the Marvel and AC heroines. Even if it's just Natasha and the General.

I can actually see Gen. Strock and the hyper bitch arguing over jurisdiction. And maybe the General doesn't want Dazzler to be part of the joint team because she's an X-Man.  An "outlaw" band of super heroes not officially sanctioned by the government. Now wouldn't THAT go over well with Sue  and the others who've worked with her before.  (That's assuming you want to use Maria Hill and the Miss Americas.  You may have a whole different cast of characters in mind.)

Anyway. I'm glad I inspired you.

I like the idea of General Strock arguing with Maria Hill over jurisdiction .
However I see Roberta as some one who is wise and insightful judge of character and so would not have a problem with Daz being a part of the mission . I see the problem arising when Maria wants use Ali as an expendable asset / canon fodder /sacrifice decoy ( "she is an unantioned outlaw  and no one important will miss her . ")
Roberta will not stand for that and argues fiercely against it.This impress Susan would had first seen the General as a "by the book Tin Soldier"
But it angers Maris who plots against her.
And I do want to include the MISS America's in the story
Thank you for the inspiration.

I should have realized that. Since you like my interpretation of Dazzler, Sue and the others your Roberta can't be all that different.

She is not .
In my "Universe " General Strock is brave dedicated  Patriotic soldier who is  highly motivated to serve and protect her country .
She is  as tough as nails and a  no nonsense commander
. But she is also wise and perceptive and compassionate . And bold and fierce  and fearless
And she is also loyal and dedicated to those who serve under her.In the official A C continuity the character has put her career  and her life on the line ( more than once) to save "her girls"
I am thinking that this attitude will put her in the gun sights of the " uber -bitch " Maria Hill  who see her as a trouble maker and a  maverick  who does not see the big picture
I think she and Ali will get along just fine  just like the FEM Force and the Miss America's .
Thank you for the moyivation
