Description This is a REAL photograph of REAL mud in Iceland. It is NOT a photo-manipulation or 3D render.

Macabre patterns are formed as volcanic mud bubbles up to the surface in Iceland.

Huge single bubbles were growing and bursting in a volcanic mud pool. The bubbles grew to about 18in (45cm) in diameter then burst suddenly and the heavy mud collapsed in on itself. This image shows the instant of collapse, just a tiny fraction of a second, but incredibly complex shapes are formed as the surface of the bubble breaks up.

Thanks for the feature.

I admit that it did take a few attempts to get the timing right!

gorgeous composition and lighting. i agree that it does look rather alive, and i think that adds a lot to the overall image.

Thank you. I remembered shooting mud bubbles in New Zealand, so I jumped at the chance of doing it in Iceland. The bubbles were quite a lot bigger and MUCH more weird and interesting.

Dude if it were alive i'd ask for one as a pet!
You must have been doing photography for a long time cuz this photo is simply dazzling!
I have been mind blown by this, before I read the description i thought it was digital art.
How is there no blur from movement? Really good camera or is the mug that slow even when collapsing, haha
