Description
This is a REAL photograph of REAL mud in Iceland. It is NOT a photo-manipulation or 3D render.Macabre patterns are formed as volcanic mud bubbles up to the surface in Iceland.
Huge single bubbles were growing and bursting in a volcanic mud pool. The bubbles grew to about 18in (45cm) in diameter then burst suddenly and the heavy mud collapsed in on itself. This image shows the instant of collapse, just a tiny fraction of a second, but incredibly complex shapes are formed as the surface of the bubble breaks up.

It looks strangely frozen... you're probably thinking 'well, duh, it's a photo' but I mean the mud looks 'solid' and sort of plastic... ugh, I can't explain those thoughts any better, it's a great capture

Amazing! You've captured something out of this world! I can stare at it for hours and yet I find something new from it all the time. Just wow!

Yes, the holes could look like eye sockets in a skull, I think that is one of the reasons the image is a bit disturbing. The more you look for shapes and patterns the more you'll find!

I love it. When you first think of Macabre, you think of stitched up dolls and dead things, but this isn't either, but fits perfectly in with the title. <3

Yes, this image is so reminiscent of the macabre. I'd love to know why.

Yes, it was one of those occasions where the photograph was more spectacular than the actual event. The collapse of the huge mud bubbles was so quick that it needed a camera to freeze the exquisite detail of the chaotic implosion.

As it looks so clean and shiny I presumed this was actually a 3d render.

Yes, it does look like a render, but I can assure you it is completely real. Perhaps I should upload some of the other shots from the series.

I'd love to see the CGI community try to model the physics of this phenomenon!
I might pop up a few more from this series in my scraps when I get time, but this one is probably the best of the bunch.
