Description This is a REAL photograph of REAL mud in Iceland. It is NOT a photo-manipulation or 3D render.

Macabre patterns are formed as volcanic mud bubbles up to the surface in Iceland.

Huge single bubbles were growing and bursting in a volcanic mud pool. The bubbles grew to about 18in (45cm) in diameter then burst suddenly and the heavy mud collapsed in on itself. This image shows the instant of collapse, just a tiny fraction of a second, but incredibly complex shapes are formed as the surface of the bubble breaks up.

that is an amazing photo - really good capture and i like the gray tint - it makes it hard to tell whether the photo is black and white or not!

btw - that would be a pretty spectacular 3D render, if made from scratch. just goes to show how amazing the art of everyday nature really is.

We, surrealists, have to consume large amounts of hashish to produce such images inside our heads. And there you go -- a bursting bubble of mud! I'm shocked.

Whenever my brain is presented with random patterns like this it immediately works on that 'cloudwatching' mode. Looking for hidden objects within the greater shape. Some lovely seahorse and animal skull fun in there! Great photo.

I can imagine the noise that mud made, sadly it's rather difficult to ytpe. It's like 'Shplk' or something.

This is a gorgeous photograph. I really like that it's taken when the bubbles collapses, instead of a bit later. I love the beauty the photograph represents, and the fact that it's taken by a something so "boring" as a mud bubbles up in Iceland - makes it even more interesting and fascinating. Good work!
