Photography classes are something I never really had the opportunity to do so I'm familiar with trial and error. Lots of error. What camera do you have? If I cam be of any assistace drop me a note.

The camera I'd want to use is a Cannon AE-1. The one I know how to use the timer on, is just a Kodak EasyShare... I can experiment with it, but it's only a 4 mega pixel camera meant more for casual shots.

For this sort of stuff you don't really use the self-timer, you put the shutter on B and use a locking cable release. That lets you keep the shutter open for as long as you need. You can do that easily with the AE-1 (it almost certainly has a B shutter speed), though probably not with the Kodak. If you do use the self-timer you need to select a long shutter speed (several seconds) and hope you can get the whole shot finished before the shutter closes again.

To give you an idea of what you can achieve, my good friend and frequent model, Sarah, took this self-portrait in her darkened hallway with a 2MP Olympus: [link]

Thanks for the advice. The Cannon has a B shutter speed, though, I do not have a locking cable release. The Kodak can go up to 4 seconds of exposure, though, I know that's not really enough for certian shots. I'll have to look into getting what I need for the Cannon. It needs to be serviced anyways. It's an older camera, but I wouldn't trade it for a new one.

The AE-1 is a great camera, I have a Nikon FE of similar vintage that I still use on occasion. You can pick up a cable realese from somewhere like Andorama for less than $10.

On the digital, four seconds is certainly long enough to have a go and get the feel of the process before you commit to film.

True. It's easiest to fool around with the digital before I get serious with the film. Thanks for the heads up, I'll have to look into the cable realese. It would be very handy indeed.

wowie. how do you do that dave?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

DaveMc In reply to wolfmaid [2005-05-17 08:46:13 +0000 UTC]

You must All you need is a dark room, a source of light and a camera that can do long exposures. A tripod helps, as does a whole lot of patience and a willingness to mess it up a lot before you get it right.

i have a camera with long exposures, and ive done a few before, but i lack a darkroom....but just turn off the lights at night and it works just fine

It's a lightpainting - a long exposure lit using a small flashlight. All of the light is coming from "flame".

Excellent work. Pat yourself on the back! The eyes just grab you.

So many people put up images that the composition is good but the image is out of focus.

This one is just perfect.

Well, the "flame" is the source of the light in this one. It's not a flame of course, but it's close enough
