So cool.
So with it being on a real long shutter speed to get the light drawing as it were does it mean the model has to stay extra-specially still otherwise it would blur?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DaveMc In reply to bec1989 [2007-03-21 21:43:26 +0000 UTC]

Yes, usually around a minute, so a model who can hold a pose well is essential.

most intriging, might i ask what light painting is exactly?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DaveMc In reply to SamSeddon [2006-08-30 22:19:01 +0000 UTC]

Light painting is long exposure work lit with a small hand-held light, usually a flashlight - in this case a slightly modified Mini-Maglite. The flashlight is moved during the exposure to "paint" light onto the subject.

Outstanding picture! What size light did you use, just wondering how big the flash light was or maybe could you do the same picture with a small led light. Keep up the good work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DaveMc In reply to Turbo-knight [2006-04-21 20:09:59 +0000 UTC]

It was a very small one - 2 AA cells. You could do the same thing with LED lights, but I tend to find the colour temperature of LEDs to be somewhat strange - I suspect that they produce a broken spectrum, which is difficult to correct.

Where did you get the light torch? I've been trying long exposures with my old Nikon EM 35mm I have from when I was a kid. Not sure what to use as a light source, or exposure sttings/times. Any helping hints?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DaveMc In reply to cappaholic [2005-12-03 18:12:17 +0000 UTC]

You can pretty much use any light you like, I have quite a few flashlights and each gives a different look. You need to lock the shutter open with a cable-release and control the exposure with the aperture alone. A few test shots will be be needed to figure out what aperture you need to use for any given light.

I'm just now trying to accomplish these type of shots. Experimenting. Problem is I'm using a standard SLR, so I don't know the outcome until I get the film developed.

DaveMc In reply to cappaholic [2005-12-04 00:34:40 +0000 UTC]

The best thing to do is shoot a series of test shots, bracketing widely. With ISO 100 film and a standard D cell flashlight I would expect to use f5.6, but there are many variables: brightness of the bulb, age of the batteries, distance of the light from the subject, speed of movement of the light etc. Once you get that sorted out you'll still probably have to shoot qulte a lot of film to get that one good shot.

That open of an aperature? Uh oh. I've been using like a f16, like in the shots in which I've been doing light trails from cars. I can't wait to get a D-SLR!

Please swing by and take a look and support some of the other artists. *I wish I would have posted the woman in the bulb, but this is still one of my favs too!
