Description I was bored today so I built this ship. She is a modular cargo transporter, belinging to the Long Haul class. I have to make up all the specs, because she is my own design. Anyway, she is an early TOS cargo ship, a small but tough lady

Design and mesh by me (Oh, I wanted to say that for so long )

i assume also a passenger transport or else why al the extra living space

No, it's actually that all the living space is located at the exterior bulkheads, all internal space is engineering/cargo.

Nice design and certainly fits nicely into TOS. Good job! And yes, I do believe transport ships are rather underrepresented usually, although, without them, all would fall apart!

Very nice.
I especially like the glowy blueness of the nacelles, they remind me of the NX01-Enterprise's nacelles.

Can this transporter drop its cargo modules like the J class (Earth Cargo Authority) cargo ships or are they permanently attached?

Thank you.

Yupp, the ship can drop the modules (and can attatch up to five of them).

I don't know jack about Trek naming conventions, but I would think Starfleet would give noncombatant starships a different prefix than "USS". Maybe something like "UFPS" would be more appropriate, for "United Federation of Planets Ship". This would be similar to how the U.S. Navy gives hospital ships and supply and combat support ships the prefix "USNS" for "United States Naval Ship". "USS" in the U.S. Navy is reserved for ships that have a direct role in combat and warfare, and so are fitted with direct armaments for combat. I'm assuming this ship doesn't have much, if anything, in the way of armaments.

davemetlesits In reply to Patriot1776 [2009-04-13 16:17:36 +0000 UTC]

USS stands for United Starship, a generic prefix for all Starfleet ships.

My ship has two forward facing phasers (they are, as in TOS, hidden behind panels so not visible when fully assembled )

Patriot1776 In reply to davemetlesits [2009-04-13 17:04:23 +0000 UTC]

Ah, so it does have some armaments. I guess being what you call a Long Haul ship, its designed to be able to haul cargo long distances without necessarily needing an escort ship or two? And I figure it carries cargo that ranges from stuff that either nobody would be interested in stealing up to possibly cargo valuble enough that somebody might want to steal it, but the ship's armament is such to be able to deal with the most likely would-be thieves.

I call it Long Hul class because of the long chain of cargo modules it hauls

I've made a ton of ship designs (Basically Dorsal of starboard views) This is one of my favorites. Angelic Class, basically has a saucer with a neck that goes past the main part of the ship, which spreads down and out like Angel wings, down so that it covers the warp nacelles and 'neck' and warp nacelles stretch so that from the dorsal and starboard views the back and front of each can be visible. The wings are weapons and sensors and stuff like that. In later versions the 'Head and Neck' can separate from the 'Wings,' and pop up a small bridge, along with the aft of the 'neck' sprouting nacelles. The Saucer is relatively small.
Length: 481 meters (About .75 of a Galaxy) Width: 417 (.9 of Galaxy) Height: 215 (a little more than Galaxy)

Yeah, the Falcon was 'one of six variations' on a 'lanet to planet' transport (basically a courier) - I think I can find some of the other styles that developed and create one (if you watch the original Empire Strikes Back - cloud city - one was there on a pad they passed... )

Promus-Kaa [2009-04-12 23:38:40 +0000 UTC]

Now THAT is awesome!! I really like the design!! Coming up with a good TOS-era design is harder than people think - usually they just kitbash the Enterprise. This is truly original but 100% cool (well, more like "67% cool" because of those Enterprise-type nacelles which are contrary to the TOS tech of NO-WARP-CORES).

davemetlesits In reply to Promus-Kaa [2009-04-13 00:21:47 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

Well, the thing looks a bit like the second Miranda variant

As for the nacelles: the ship was built around 2200, when exposed coils were still common (and returning in 2271/TMP with new containment field technology being developed - I just thought this ups )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Promus-Kaa In reply to davemetlesits [2009-04-13 01:11:41 +0000 UTC]

I don't think it looks too much like the Miranda-variant. It's just really cool!

Warp coils are only part of a warp drive system that utilizes a warp core, because the coils generate a warp field around the ship. This is a very high-tech technology that was beyond TOS era technology. In the TOS era, remember, the nacelles were basically huge rocket engines which pushed the ship so fast that it was able to break the "time barrier" and go faster than light. I sent you a few notes on that!

korblborp In reply to Promus-Kaa [2010-03-10 17:54:17 +0000 UTC]

no i don't think that's how it worked. i'm pretty certain they were always supposed to warp spacetime instead of of pushing (hence 'time warp drive'). they just didn't define the mechanism physically in the show... gene went hey matt! saw this sciency thing..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

korblborp In reply to korblborp [2010-03-10 17:55:11 +0000 UTC]

lots of things didn't get defined till later shows, that doesn't mean their not canonical.

davemetlesits In reply to Promus-Kaa [2009-04-13 16:21:53 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know, but this is half a century before TOS, more related in a way to the NX era but a precursos to the TOS designs.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Promus-Kaa In reply to davemetlesits [2009-04-13 16:53:16 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but the NX ships were designed by people who had no idea what the hell they were doing. It shouldn't have had a warp core, either...that technology wouldn't come around until hundreds of years later! That's like putting a nuclear reactor in Christopher Columbus' ship.

No, the Braga timeline. Sorry, but I started Trek with Voyager, so for me, Braga makes canonical Trek and I am with that part of fandom which squeezes in TOS into the Braga Trek. I don't eff with the Braga

Promus-Kaa In reply to davemetlesits [2009-04-14 17:39:41 +0000 UTC]

There is no TOS in Braga Trek. ENT is a prequel to TNG, but there's no room for Roddenberry Trek (TOS) in his timeline.
