Description On the Seventh of November, 2009, I finished a 3D model of a small, old, underpowered little starship. Due to her vague similarity with a DS9 kitbash ship, I named her USS Polaris, with the low registration number of NCC-782.

In her first appearance, she valiantly fought a Tholian battlecruiser. Die-hard Polaris fans (if there are any) probably remember that picture. But that picture evolved into something I didn't expect.

I fell in love with the little cruiser I created. I built her to be nothing special, but she showed to me what she really was. She was me, in the form of a Star Trek starship. Older than her true age, scruffy, seemingly weak, but always having one more fight in her. This is the Polaris. This is me.

The original concept for the crew involved non-Humans, most importantly an Andorian female as the Chief Medical Officer and a Caitian. For the Humans, Charlotte Ainsworth (Summer Glau) and Vasily Nussbaum (Jason Isaacs) were there even at this pre-production version. As was a Captain David Metlesits. He is my descendant. He is me. He is one with his ship. My ship. As any good Captain should be.

As the months passed, the story started to evolve, with the creation of the United Earth First Fleet and everything wich set it apart from what is known in canon Star Trek. I showed a darker side of Roddenberry's utopia and set out a handful of Joe Sixpacks to fight it on their old little ship. An interesting twist of fate that thre Polaris was "born" on the 7th November - an important day of all the poor, exploited people, an anniversary of them shouting: "No more!" in 1917.

Successors followed in the shape of other Polarii, each corresponding to the Starfleet (or, should I say, the Enterprise) of her time, each a light cruiser with a crew you won't find in canon (or even non-canon) Trek. But everything started one year ago, with the first version of the USS Polaris NCC-782, a Pallada class light cruiser, a ship on which many dreams were born.

This image commemorates the very first Polaris image, featuring the Kzinti instead of the Tholians, due to the Cats evolved into the arch-enemies of the Terran boys and girls early in the story and my mind.

To everybody who grew fond of this little ship: Thank you very much of your kind support, suggestions and the love you showed toward the Polaris. She is as thankful for it as I am. May you live long and prosper.

As for the Polaris: Happy Birthday!

I built it, but I didn't release it. Polaris-related material are not for release.

Too bad! It's a very nice take on a rarely seen ship.

This is very well done, as always. One suggestion I have for future stories is to re-introduce the Caitian character. If I remember correctly, one of your stories involved the First Fleet taking on the Kzinti when the rest of Starfleet had simply run, rather than protecting the Caitians. It would make sense for at least one Caitian officer to coordinate the actions of Polaris and the fleet, much as Worf helped coordinate Starfleet operations with the Klingon Defense Forces during the Dominion War.

The crew is set, so there is no more room for any crewmembers. Especially not on the Polaris. The Caitians are featured as part of the "Iron Triangle" between Earth, Andoria and Cait.
