Description
DBZ and all its characters belong to Toei Animation, Funimation, and Akira Toriyama (Who is god of this world).I don't have a huge problem when shows want to put in their writer's view of the world or do any of that other stuff, but don't interrupt the action for it. DBZ touched on Vegeta and Piccalo's pasts once or twice when their was a significant break in the action, that's it.
LEARN FROM THEM, NARUTO, BLEACH, ALL THE YU-GI-OH SERIES, INUYASHA, AND PROBABLY EVERY OTHER ANIME EVER!

i love dbz and i dont understand why people say there is little character deveopment with the characters themselves. people say vegeta has the most devopment because his attitude changes throughout the season. well to be honest there is loads of characters that change. It didnt show that much for goku b/c we have already seen his devopment in db and he also changes a little once he became a ss. also don't forget piccolo also was once bad but turned good thanks to gohan and we see a good portion of him in the saiyan saga. We see gohans development throughout the whole series of DBZ through childhood to adulthood. We also see some backstories on a few of the characters such as broly, furture trunks and gohan, tapion and cell. there is a good amount of depth into this show and i admit, there is plotholes but why troll and point that out. Just ignore it and go with it. good show is a good show.

Yeah seriously, I like Naruto, Inuyasha, One Piece, and other anime series as much as the next schmuck, but do we really need thirty (or so it seems) straight episodes detailing a character's past?

I lovelovelove it! I bet it's weird to hear that from a girl... But I don't get into romance a lot! I like action, fighting, and all of that boyish-shtuff! Romance is cute in small doses, but I'm only into it when it involves ME (i.e. me and F. Trunks!). And Hellz yes, screw philosophy! DBZ has it's own logic!

I'm pretty sure that DBZ was definetly much deeper than this makes it out to be. One thing about DBZ was that it had numerous plot holes and it treated death like a heavy bitchslap. Some of the characters I felt that they didn't really touch up on enough, and what pissed me off the most was how they ended up putting alot of characters to the sidelines to the point where they barely do anything. About plot again, DBZ had episodes where they would slow down a little with the fighting and touch up on the character's personal lives, life story, or thoughts. It didn't have the most intricate plots, but it still managed to catch certain people's attention. The only thing that annoyed me (and caught my interest) was how overly lengthly certain fights were, which proved how much DBZ was about fighting. When it came to action, DragonBall was possibly the best. When it came to plot and character development, not really the best. It did touch alot with Vegeta and Gohan, it told you what went on in their thoughts. Out of all the characters, I think that Vegeta is probably the most loved and hated at the same time. Hated because he is normally a dick, and I think he's loved probably due to how much more development he has over the rest of the Z fighters. Dragonball was probably not intended to make you think, more of to catch your attention through action and the occasional humorous dialogue. I can't really say I know much about the series because the last time I had seen it I was ten years old. I'm getting back into it to see it now and I kind of have a little trouble trying to figure out what the meaning is behind this (if there is one) because I'm to interested in the action. The action in DBZ kind of overwhelms all the development scenes. But, all stories had their flaws.

@ Shinigami343 I kind of agree with you man.Although (like I kind of pointed out in my Jan,6th,12 posting here), I personally think that the show clearly DOES have the (note) ***capacity*** 2 have much more meaningful intricate fights, go deeper (not "darker and grittier" it already has a suffeicent level of that) and "awesomelly" more plot and character compelled. The main reason that prob.never happened is b/c Toriyama is a comedy type guy and (bizzarre as it may seem) he does'nt "take it as seriously" as his fans do.I found post #1680 on this forum and some of the one proceeding it to be a interesting look at that ([link] /showthread.php?p=14501561#post14501561).
IMO the a way it can be deeper while still retaining it's action comedy nature is to go back to it's more fantasy roots.Think taking elements of Final fantasy, the "Mother" game series (which includes the famous "Earthbound") and some elements of the Discworld books (but with Eastern mythology and folklore instead) and that would give you a vague idea of what I mean and what I'm trying 2 do in fanfic.Sorry if this seems like some long forum posting.

Good action is very important to an anime, but a good plot is too. DBZ's plot is weak and filled with plot holes. I never really got emotionally attached to the characters. I like some of them (Vegeta and Piccolo were my favorites) but they just didn't really have a lot of depth. And I didn't like that death practically didn't mean anything in the show. And, in my opinion, DBZ doesn't even have the best action. I personally like Naruto the best. It has awesome action, an incredible plot, loveable characters (even the villains are likeable), and it's very emotional. I also think it has an amazing OST, I love it's music.
Don't get me wrong, I do like DBZ, I've re-watched it several times and I own several of the movies.
This is just my opinion, I'm not trying to start an argument.

DBZ Was the Best Anime ive ever seen honestly. You people who think its just action and no plot and story? Go shove those ideas up your buttholes. Goku and the series INSPIRED Naruto and One piece and a whole majority of characters. Each Character was unique. Now that its gone. Im just buying the whole seasons in Box Sets. I grew a Hatred torwards Full Metal Alchemist jeez that show is all about B***hing and i hate how the Action revolves around Science. God Edward and Alphons's voices are annoying like heck. Point is DBZ was not all fight. It Had story. and it had THREE SERIES OVERALL. Dragon Ball, Z, and GT. You think its all just stupid fighting? Well no. There are a whole chain of Episodes revolving around the characters themselves and not fighting. The Biggest you can see is the "Great Saiyaman Saga" which showed Gohan in High School and how he fell in Love with Videl.

No offense, but I dont get how all of you are calling it "all fight". I cant help but disagree. Don't get me wrong, DBZ was (and still is) the only anime I really am a nerd about.(Its my favorite) When I was a kid, I was a bit more girly. I couldn't STAND bloody scenes. So when I'd watch them on my brother's DVDs, I'd skip them and still get a whole lot from the series than the fights. My favorite character is Vegeta BECAUSE of his past. His shitty life and stuff made me fall in love with the series and his character. So I don't believe it was "all fight" nor "dramatic". It was a. . . perfect balance I guess. A lot of fights backed up with their everyday lives.

I'm sorthis is such a random and late reply. But I totaly agree with you. I love the development on the charictors. Vegeta was my favorie for a long time then future Trunks took over for the sam reason I like Vegeta. I do agree that there is a good balance between their every day lives and the fights.

I think myself that the world would explode. It would just ruin DBZ and make Twilight better but still it would be shit.

I kind if disagree with this demotiv.Even though the show was basically moral dualism and fighting. There were tormented pasts (ex.Vegeta,Future Trunks & by extentsion Tien if u include info on his past in the orig). There was'nt any "love triangles" but Vegeta and Gohan developed romances with the latter's being on screen. There is also arguably some more introspective stuff (though not philosophy) like family history, misuse of power and redemption although a lot of that is subjective to interpretation since it was'nt really so openly conspicous on the show.Highly unlikely as it is 4 many reasons if they made another DB series personally I would love if they had a better mix of energy and physical moves (ex.a ki charged punch) instead of overwhelming energy moves and if they gave more characterization with having characters who's fighting styles r based on a real life martial art like what they did with "the last airbender" series. For ex.I could picture all descendants of Goku to have a natural apt to fight with Monkey kung-fu moves while doing it in the signature fast and frenzied DBZ.Doing that would be IMO the next big step to developing the series by developing the fighting in such a way that is comparable to the significant change in fighting techniques between the original DB and DBZ.Also the only way enemies considering how Z and GT left off could actually effectively get more powerful, interesting and better would be if u have like cosmic or conceptual entities and u cant really do those without some philosophy or at least some more introspection.

this poster has a pt..The DBZ series is interesting in how compared 2 some other anime it's not very introspective.I'd disagree a bit about not having "angsty tormented pasts" though.Examples include Piccolo (aka Piccolo Jr.,King Piccolo's son),alternate future trunks,Vegeta a bit (after having his dad killed and forced 22 work 4 Freeza),Broly and I've got feeling some other movie only characters would fit that category.

It's these so-called "bullshit philosophy, teen-drama love triangles, or angsty tormented pasts" that makes other animes - even Naruto and Bleach - far superior than DBZ, plot-wise. The other mangaka learned what Toriyama may have failed to learn - a good, solid plot and enough character development is what makes people love anime. We're not brainless anymore.
I'm a big fan of DBZ, and to be honest I'll never be attracted to other animes the same way as DBZ had done to me, but I know for a fact that DBZ wasn't the best around. Character development was fucking horrible. Many characters are really irrelevant (in comparison to FMA, where even the MINOR characters have a very important role to play in the story) to the story, and there is no plot in DBZ, to speak of - each saga is merely a chain of battles intertwined together. The ONLY time we get to see a rather excellent plot and character development was the Cell Saga (which could damn well be its own series). Admit it, you only like DBZ for the ACTION. And that's all DBZ is good for.
