Dave, Check put a painting of mine called Ultra Violence. There's a similar style there and I think you'll dig it. And again, great job on the ICE RAPTOR!

Yeah, because feathers can't keep it warm no. The obviously vulnerable sail would work.

But if this was made before you knew feathers, my apologies

Cool design, but sails would freeze so quickly. They look amazing, tho

Right, because modern animals that live in frigid environments totally have areas of thin exposed skin. Oh wait, no they don't, because that would make them LOOSE HEAT. Do you morons know ANYTHING about thermoregulation???

Mekronid In reply to MaxterandKiwiKing [2014-12-06 22:30:34 +0000 UTC]

It causes them to "lose" heat because directly exchanging heat with the environment results in a net loss unless the environment itself is warm. I.E., direct heat exchange in polar environments is a death sentence. Hair and skin provides protection the same way insulation does - by using a non-living barrier as a means of isolating heat from the environment. Hair is more efficient than skin at containing heat because it uses air - one of the best natural insulators.

So, what if:
A. The animal's exposed skin were maintained in a manner similar to claws and nails, where the resulting tissue does not contain and is not necessarily nearby any blood vessels. It could even be a form of scales which trap air like hair does, hence why the scales are mostly on the forward and downward facing areas. Wouldn't a solid mass be more effective at isolating air from the environment, assuming said mass didn't easily transmit heat?
B. The sail area had blood/lymph vessels in the spines/sails which only allowed heat exchange when the result would be a net increase in body temperature. The sails could use melanin deep under their surfaces to generate heat, while the sails' outer layer would be a thick, clear surface (perhaps with air pockets?) which would help prevent wind-related heat loss.

The fun thing about evolution is that it doesn't result in the best design for an animal's environment. It results in the most easily adapted design which works to an acceptable degree. That's why we ended up with birds instead of giant raptors. But if a different form factor had been more easily adapted back when the mass extinctions occurred, who knows what could've happened?

That's all the artist is getting at. "What if." Not "what is."

They's still die off in the climate changes, even faster than the mammals. But with that thing, it's possible.

Indeed a nice concept... I like the sail objective, but it could turn against him when the blizzards starts...???
maybe he could folder over itself ??? that could star a new picture about this creature,
