Description
WARNING! Do not download any of these computer viruses onto your computer. You could seriously mess up your computer, have all of your personal information and data compromised, or even get in trouble with the law if it spreads to other people. We already had Covid-19 to worry about in the early 2020s, but apparently there was another virus we had to worry about, mainly for Android users and more specifically a ransomware. In March 2020, there was a fake app called Coronavirus Tracker. Common sense says to just stay home and practice social distancing whenever you had to go out. But for some folks, that wasn't enough somehow. The app worked by asking for allowing battery optimization, this is done so the ransomware could keep running. Then it asks the user for access to the accessibility feature, this is so the ransomware stays persistent. Then finally it asks for administrator privileges so it supposedly can better detect that a positive tested patient is nearby, but the goal of every single hacker is to get administrator privileges on any device. If all of those steps are taken, the ransomware goes into full effect! As soon as the victim presses the "Scan area for coronavirus", the phone gets locked and a ransom message appears asking for $250 in bitcoin within 24 hours or else the hacker will leak all of the victim's personal data, videos, photos, etc. to the internet. How many red flags did you guys catch? This is pure social engineering at its finest since there was already a ton of misinformation being spread online about Covid, and now there were hackers using fake apps using people's fears to their advantage.
The lesson here is to stick to valid and credible sources of how to survive a pandemic such as doctors, the WHO, the CDC, and that episode of Surviving Disaster about a pandemic. Right now, Covid's no longer a pandemic, but it's still out there.
