The creation process of the "Outposts" matte painting. The idea was to create a sci-fi scene featuring two tower complexes built on high ground. I started by roughly sketching out the design of the main tower on a piece of paper. Then, I quickly modeled the basic shapes of the scene using Sketchup, to figure out the best camera angle for the shot. Once I had decided which angle works best, I imported the scene as a 2d image into Photoshop where I started tweaking the values and hues to create a sense of depth and coherence in the image. I used photo textures to quickly detail certain parts and added elements like additional structures and flying objects to enrich and balance the composition. As a final touch, I boosted contrast using the "levels" feature of Photoshop.Final image can be seen here: davidhakobian.deviantart.com/a…

i always struggle drawing architecture and i'd never thought of using sketchup, thats a really cool idea! thanks for sharing how you make your images, its very helpful
