Description "It was very dreary being a dragon. He shuddered whenever he caught sight of his own reflection ... He hated the huge, bat like wings, the saw-edged ridge on his back, and the cruel, curved claws. He was almost afraid to be alone with himself and yet he was ashamed to be with the others."
-Voyage of the Dawn Treader

--

This is one of the best scenes in The Chronicles of Narnia. It always stood out throughout the years for me since it shows the greatest change in any of the characters - in more ways then one. I'm so happy i did this painting, this image has been in my head for so long - I'm so glad its on paper now also, done in watercolor and took about 20+ hours to finish.

I am happy Disney got rid of it. They haven't done anything recently that I've enjoyed (cartoon wise). I love family movies, don't get me wrong. Animated films are some of my favorites. The extreme appropriateness that Disney strives for has ruined many possible good movies.

I'm happy your Christmas was good, we had a small but nice dinner. We got snowed in yesterday so we're waiting for the snow plows to save us.

I think Disney has been in a decline since Aladdin with only a few pockets of goodness to show since then. The two Narnia movies were the best things they'd done in years. Perhaps they got rid of it because they weren't all that involved with it so didn't have any attachments. Still, really delighted that Fox picked it up and I hope they keep going with it!

Glad to hear you had a nice Christmas too. All our snow is melting here!

I agree, Aladdin is probably my favorite Disney movie (of the early 90s+ generation). Is it bad I know all the songs?

The snow finally melted here in PA too. We didn't get it nearly as bad as they were calling for. I agree, I'm happy that Fox picked Narnia up too, I saw the movie yesterday and it was much edgier than the previous films.

Happy New Year to you and your family!

Aladdin is a great one. My wife knows most of the songs herself. My preference though was always Beauty and the Beast. Maybe that's the sap in me. It felt less like it was attempting to be popular whereas Aladdin you have all the pop culture references via the Genie. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed them, just made it feel less authentic if that makes any sense. Still, Aladdin is by far better than anything Disney came up with animation-wise after (though I did love Brother Bear for other reasons).

Where are you at in PA? I'm near Pittsburgh myself.

How did you think the movie was edgier? I suppose there was less time marveling at the magic of Narnia as there was some in the first two movies.

Happy New Year to you and your family too!

Oh cool, I'm right outside Philadelphia. I actually spent my New Years at the new Harrahs that opened up a few months ago with my brother. Definitely a different way to spend the holiday!

I know what you mean about the cultural references. I think that's more Robin Williams than anything. Beauty and the Beast was a great movie, most Disney films are (minus the 2000's). I remember really liking Brother Bear, although I haven't seen it in a few years. Honestly though, my favorite cartoon wasn't even a Disney Film, it was 'The Iron Giant'.

Well, take the serpent scene. It would still have been included in the movie because it's an important scene in the book, but not nearly as cool looking/visually striking. I thought the way they filmed the whole thing too had a more intense feel.

I hope your New Years was good! Best Wishes for 2011

Forgive my ignorance, but what's a Harrahs?

I only like a few of the Disney movies made after Aladdin. But when they get away from the lowest-common-denominator type stuff they managed to put out some good material. and my favorite cartoon is also non-Disney, "The Secret of Nimh". Just one more reason why I've always loved rodents, and why Reepicheep is the awesome!

Good point about the Sea Serpent. They certainly made it a much more dramatic and intense sequence. and of course the fight on the isle of slavers. That was definitely a new touch.

Yes, I had a great time!~ My wife and I just watched movies, and then shared a bit of wine to ring in the new year. And best wishes to you too for 2011!

Sorry! Harrah's is a casino. We usually go to Atlantic City for that, but they opened one a few miles away. My brother and I like to play poker

Yes, the slave scene was also intense. Disney would have taken a different approach I think. Quiet holidays are the best holidays in my opinion. Yours sounded great!

I think 2011 will be better than 2010.

Ah, there you go! I'm not much of a Poker player myself, but I do love watching Craps. Perhaps because I'm a Mathematician and I love seeing what combinations of numbers come up.

My holiday was excellent. Almost two weeks of uninterrupted hiatus from work. Was a lovely break. And I got to go to Mass more often.

I'm hoping that it is. So far it seems to be starting off just right.

yes! i love to see how people paint such beautiful things, but i never understand quite how they do it it's truly amazing! i also love your fox as your avatar. did you paint that too? i do hope to see more paintings and narnia paintings from you soon your welcome!

DavidHoffrichter In reply to lottieowl [2010-11-20 02:49:16 +0000 UTC]

Thank you again! Yes, I painted my icon/Avatar. It is from my piece called "Wanderer of the Woods". I'm definitely an animal nut, I think all my paintings should have animals in them

It doesn't matter if your paintings or drawings are necessarily good/professional, as long as you love what you do and create, that's all that matters ~ the rest comes with time and the more you love creating, the more you'll put into it without much thought I can say I'm enjoying creating my recent paintings more than some of my more popular pieces!

I love the story of Eustace! I hope they do it justice when the new Narnia movie comes out. So far I think they did a pretty good job with them, but the books will always be my favorites...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DavidHoffrichter In reply to bluelilyoffire3 [2010-04-11 21:55:05 +0000 UTC]

I hope so too! I think they will, a lot of people didn't like Prince Caspian but it was always one of the weaker books in the series. However, Voyage was one of the strongest and I am very excited!

It's funny, I am currently reading the sword of truth series and even though I like the show "legend of the seeker" there is no comparison that the books are better

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bluelilyoffire3 In reply to DavidHoffrichter [2010-04-12 17:37:20 +0000 UTC]

I thought the Seekers sounded familar... I tried reading "Wizard's First Rule" but I couldn't get into it because of the horrible witchcraft. Using a little boy as a sacrifice and explaining it in full detail just doesn't work for me. But I do like a lot of other fantasy authors. Terry Brooks, Anne McCaffrey, Mercedes Lackey, Robert Jordan, Diane Wynn Jones... there are others too that I can't think of right now.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DavidHoffrichter In reply to bluelilyoffire3 [2010-04-12 18:26:55 +0000 UTC]

That was definitely a crazy and dark scene. I think Terry Goodkind was on something when he wrote that

I'm on the 5th book in that series and besides the heavy fighting (lots of death, etc) there wasn't (from what I remember) anything like that original scene in terms of sorcery.

I have Robert Jordan's series next on the cue. His stuff, along with the Sword of Fire and Ice Series One author I want to get into is Terry Pratchett - I think I will like his books, but I have no idea where to start

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bluelilyoffire3 In reply to DavidHoffrichter [2010-04-13 01:30:48 +0000 UTC]

Terry Pratchett tends to make fun of fantasy books, though... doesn't he? I read the back of some of his. It's kind of Monty Pythonish... Which is kind of funny.
