Description
Haikara-go is a special century-old tram that has served Hakodate since 1918 and today runs as a regular tram on weekends and public holidays. While it travels passengers learn about the historic places they're passing as information goes out over the intercom. It requires no special ticket or fare, if you see it stop just get on and pay the regular price! I rode it from Suehiro-cho to the end of the line, Hakodate Dock-Mae, where the attendant has a special sign passengers can hold up to take pictures with the tram."Haikara" is an old Japanese term (literally "high collar") for something modern and fashionable.
This tram was built in 1910 and initially served in Narita, Chiba Prefecture before being purchased and moving to Hakodate in 1918. It stayed in passenger service until 1936 and was used for snow removal afterwards. It was restored for passengers service in 1992 for the 70th anniversary of Hakodate City's beginning of municipal administration.
I'll be writing about my trip to Hakodate soon!
