Description

This stone engine shed was built in 1911 and is the oldest operating shed in Japan. It is used by SL Hitoyoshi's engine 58654 and is adjacent to a working turntable.

58654 is a Japan Government Railways Class 8620 2-6-0 steam locomotive that was built by Hitachi Seisakuju Co. in 1922. She served around Kyushu until her first retirement in 1975. She came out of retirement to be a sightseeing nostalgia train in 1988. Today she runs on weekends throughout the spring and summer taking travelers from Kumamoto to Hitoyoshi and back through a beautiful green valley along the Kuma River and stopping at two classic wooden railway stations. At Hitoyoshi she is kept at the stone engine shed and travelers can watch her get re-oriented on the turntable in preparation for her return trip.
