Description
In case you didn't work it out, this is the cover for X-Factor #50.This was another cover I did just before I went overseas. In addition to the pencils and inks, I really wanted to do the colours on this cover too, but I just didn't have the time. I think Nathan ended up colouring this one as well.
I wasn't really happy with Madrox on this cover, luckily the 50 (or more accurately the negative space) covers him up. I also noticed I forgot to ink some lines on Rictor's hand. I wonder if it's too late to make corrections (or if I even have time).
Aside from my inking of Rictor's hand, one of my favourite parts of this cover is Rictor hugging Shatterstar. It's funny I've seen people online commenting on how that hug seems like a f*** you from Peter David and Marvel aimed at Rob Liefeld (on CBR Rob objected to his creation being made Gay in X-Factor, and got into a little "discussion" with Peter David and others over there). Truth is, the hug was just something I threw in. The body language of the characters just worked with what had recently been established in the interior pages, so I thought it made a nice touch.
As always pencils and inks by me. Colours by Nathan Fairbairn (I think).
X-FACTOR #50
Written by PETER DAVID
Penciled by VALENTINE DE LANDRO
Cover by DAVID YARDIN
Worlds and times collide in this double-sized conclusion to the year long storyline that has revitalized X-Factor. Will the Summers Rebellion triumph as is supposed to happen...or will it be derailed? Will Madrox make it back to his own time? Will Siryn, Monet and the rest of the team have their final showdown with Cortex? Will we actually learn just how it is that Layla Miller knows stuff? Will someone die? The answer to at least some of these questions is: Yes.

Yeah I read the discussion too, and that was a funny scene in the book. BTW I don't know if that cover will ever happen with Guido's current existence being... er...

OH NO AA SPOILERS hahaha actually I was referring to both Shatterstar & Rictor being on a cover together. But Guido + anyone is awesome by me too.

I just hope they don't Retcon the kiss between Rictor and Shatterstar. This cover is awesome and I have to agree with about the old JLU and JL style covers.

dang dude I'm not professional, but things like that happen to me all the time. I draw something and I think its like a cool idea then I find someone else who pretty much drew the same thing before me =/. But its not like you drew 100 bullets characters in there. the only similarity is the 50 and people gotta calm down and not give you such a hard time. it could happen to anyone. great minds think alike right? well all that aside this is a great piece . you and Dave Johnson have on my watch list for a while and you both inspire me greatly and I hope to be professional someday soon =].

Pretty familiar, yo.
I love Dave Johnson as much as the next cat, but let's leave some 'breathing room' art-wise, yeah?
Courtesy.
Or is it all coincidence?
Oh well.

Just curious here, has anyone mentioned the resemblance in composition and palette to Dave Johnson's 100 Bullets Cover?

davidyardin In reply to MikeHaff [2009-09-26 03:14:11 +0000 UTC]
No, I don't think I even saw Dave's 100 Bullets Cover (Don't hate me I do have the first TPB).
***quick google search***
Hmm... yeah the idea looks the same with the 50, but the actual drawing's not the same layout. Colours I guess Nathan's b/g choice is close to Dave's Orange, but I think Nathan is using the Yellow/Orange to pop against Guido, rather than as Dave's used it (affecting all the colours). I actually wanted a dark b/g in the negative space around the 50, as I think that would have popped better (either that or make the area within the 50 darker). Palette-wise I would have gone with something different as well, but oh well.
Anyway apologies to Dave if he sees it as a rip; on my end it was produced without having seen his cover.

I hear you. I think it was made a bigger deal by a few peeps on his page than it needed to be, but that is a popular layout to do and I have seen it as a fan for years anyway.
All of that aside, it is a really nice piece!
By the way, pretty damn cool that you reply to so many comments. I notice that about your page.
Kudos to you!
It lends a lot to you as a person and artist.

Awesome, man. Love your work on this cover, I'd been admiring it since it came out and you did a great job with all the characters.
I'm sad there is such a huge negative fuss being made about Rictor and Shatterstar. You conveyed the warmth between Star and Ric very very well. Nice to see those two happy. (finally)
And you're right, Marvel writers have been hinting about Ric and Star for about...10 years now I think. There are some pages out there detailing it but hopefully people don't think it's too out of the blue.
Again, awesome work on the cover! Thank you for that extra touch. Now I'm going to have to check out your color work too!

so shatterstar is gay, so is rictor i guess from the hug?, and X-factor turns 50?! I remember buying #1.... damn I've missed a lot of issues.....

Yeah Rictor is Bi or Gay, and Shatterstar is obviously one or the other too. Shatterstar's sexual leanings were apparently hinted at before the current X-Factor series though.

Yeah, Ric actually hinted at his bi'ness in issues past in a conversation with Maddox I believe.
It's been hinted at for a long time.
My apologies David for commenting outside appreciating the image!

shouldn't be a problem with the commenting outside the image..... I haven't been able to get an X-factor issue since #11, so i didn't get a chance to read that.... I remember when Rictor was introduced in New Mutants, it's odd to see people (lol people) you've read about be different than you've known.....

Yeah, I can definitely agree there! Some comic writers of the DC and Marvel persuasion keep up character development continuity and others don't seem to bother. (my god there were some Robin issues I was wtf'ing at a while ago) Even then, time can definitely warp characters. I remember Rogue being evil with a horrid haircut. WEIRD.
But if you want some backstory for whats been going on with Rictor (Star too) I know a couple sites that could catch you up with what some of the writers were doing when he was in the storyline. It can, sadly, be rather confusing. Those two have been thick as thieves for a bit now, except when other writers decide they're not friends. Hence the confusing!

I love your covers, they're really nice.
And I gotta say, I love hearing that the hug between Rictor and Shatterstar wasn't just flipping the bird to Liefeld or anything like that. Makes it even nicer to me that it's there just because it seemed natural for the characters, not just for the sake of making this Big Scandalous Statement.
Not that, y'know, flipping the figurative bird wouldn't have been funny.
Just kidding.
Or am I?
...Nah, I am. :]

Thanks.
Yeah the hug wasn't in the brief at all, but Peter David told me it was a nice touch too I met him in San Diego.
I always try and do subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) things with the body language in my work, and I guess a lot of times it is only unconsciously noticed (which is often the beauty of it).
I like how the hug worked, not only because it fit the relationship now established between the characters, but visually it makes an interesting juxtaposition between the rest of the team looking all hard and serious (especially the ladies), and Rictor being really happy for once (you've got to admit he's been a bit mopey since losing his powers). Shatterstar is still all serious looking though.

I really like this cover, as well. I was a bit skeptical about the big fifty, upon seeing the zoomed-out version, but it works. I really like how Longshot and Darwin turned out, as well as Rictor and Shatterstar.
But then, I've really liked all your X-Factor covers.
