Description
In case you didn't work it out, this is the cover for X-Factor #50.This was another cover I did just before I went overseas. In addition to the pencils and inks, I really wanted to do the colours on this cover too, but I just didn't have the time. I think Nathan ended up colouring this one as well.
I wasn't really happy with Madrox on this cover, luckily the 50 (or more accurately the negative space) covers him up. I also noticed I forgot to ink some lines on Rictor's hand. I wonder if it's too late to make corrections (or if I even have time).
Aside from my inking of Rictor's hand, one of my favourite parts of this cover is Rictor hugging Shatterstar. It's funny I've seen people online commenting on how that hug seems like a f*** you from Peter David and Marvel aimed at Rob Liefeld (on CBR Rob objected to his creation being made Gay in X-Factor, and got into a little "discussion" with Peter David and others over there). Truth is, the hug was just something I threw in. The body language of the characters just worked with what had recently been established in the interior pages, so I thought it made a nice touch.
As always pencils and inks by me. Colours by Nathan Fairbairn (I think).
X-FACTOR #50
Written by PETER DAVID
Penciled by VALENTINE DE LANDRO
Cover by DAVID YARDIN
Worlds and times collide in this double-sized conclusion to the year long storyline that has revitalized X-Factor. Will the Summers Rebellion triumph as is supposed to happen...or will it be derailed? Will Madrox make it back to his own time? Will Siryn, Monet and the rest of the team have their final showdown with Cortex? Will we actually learn just how it is that Layla Miller knows stuff? Will someone die? The answer to at least some of these questions is: Yes.

Thank you.
The 50 I was kind of iffy on too at first, but I think it will stand out on the shelves, and that's (hopefully) half the battle won.

Really dig this cover, looks like a nod to those old JLU and JLI covers where everyones staring up at you.
Great expressions and really dig how each face is unique.
Who cares if Shatterstar's gay or not, he's still cool and really dig the new design on him and Longshot.
Question, I've been wanting to jump on to this series but I'm not sure when what issue the current storyline started at, if possible could you let me know then I can start scrounging for back issues

Thanks.
The new design for Shatterstar was done by the interior artist. I'm doing some redesigns for the rest of the team at the moment too.
As for a good jumping on point... if you want to get the single issues try either from #39 if you can find it, or jump on at the upcoming #200 (which comes after #50; they're renumbering back to what the issues would have been had the original series not ended).
Having said that I highly recommend reading from the start of the current series (I was a fan long before I started doing the covers), so I would start with "The Longest Night" TPB or HC (there was also a Madrox limited series which preceeded the current series and was also a cool read).

Nice. Looking forward to your designs. I like how their costumes are all kinda "street level" gear. Very cool and makes them different from the usual spandex but still almost a team look.
So the current arc started at 39?
I may hold out for the trades. Really looking forward at getting into this series. I did pick up the first trade which was great, the second trade was a little disappointing. But after all the hype over the current story and of course your covers definitely contribute to making me more intrigued about the series and love for these characters.
I'll try get the Madrox series if I can find it this side.
Thanks for the tips David.
Cheers and keep up the great inspirational work

What issue is this? hahaha, jk. Nice layout! Siryn is making a face at me like she's asking..."Did you fart?" Which i will answer... I refuse to answer on the grounds that it may incriminate me...

I like this cover, but I'm not too keen on how the 50 covers so much of the art.
So, the hug was just something tossed in as a nod to current events. Here I was thinking you were establishing the characters' standing in their relationship. That Shatterstar is the pitcher and Rictor is the catcher. lol Just kidding.
I just thought it was funny how so many people got worked up over one kiss between guys.

I was planning the 50 to be there before I thought of the rest of the image.
