Description The Mediterranean War, called by some as the Second War of Italian Unification, was a conflict between the Kingdom of Lombardy, the Ottoman Empire, and their principal allies. Strife first rose between the Ottomans and Lombardy over the latter's claims on Tunisia, which was at that time held under suzerainty of the Ottoman Sultan. War broke out between the two after the Ottomans issued an ultimatum for Lombardy to abandon its claims. France, Carpathia and the Italian Confederation under command of Liguria, Tuscany and the Papal States declared war on Lombardy. In return, the Greek Empire declared war on the Ottomans and Hispania and the Netherlands issued their own declaration of war on France, against whom they had guaranteed Lombardian independence.

Early in the War, France made some major gains in the Savoyard Front, even occupying the Lombardian capital, but the stabilization of the Hispanish front and a Dutch blockade on France in the Atlantic forced them to withdraw to fight against a three-front war. The Ottoman assaults against Constantinople failed, forcing them to lose much needed manpower -something Lombardy made good use of after a lightning-assault occupation of most of the Papal State, Tuscany and Liguria. Things became worse for the Allies when Carpathia made a separate peace with the Greco-Lombard alliance, leaving the war at the expense of annexing Bosnia -which had been a Greek vassal. France agreed to a ceasefire in 18 April, letting the Conference of Genoa to begin.

At the conclusion of the conference, the Ottomans were forced to deliver most of their African lands -in particular Tunisia, Fezzan, Cyrenaica, and Tripoli which became the Lombard colonies of Tunisia, Tripolitania and Cyrenaica. Liguria, Tuscany and other states in Central Italy were annexed by the Lombards, who also took most of the Papal State outside of Latium. The Parliament of Lombardy declared the formation of the Kingdom of Italy on 17 March 1866.
