In 1855, the Kingdom of Spain met with several diplomats from the United States of America to negotiate their offer to purchase Cuba. In dire need of money to refill its treasury which had been drained in a recent Civil War and fully aware of the Ostend Manifesto, The US's official position regarding Cuba which would result in a declaration of war on Spain in case of their refusal to sell that island, Spain let go of its largest remaining colonial possession. Cuba was immediately overran by wealthy southerners who very much would like to settle it and allow for it to become a slave state and restore balance in the US Senate. Only six years later, the Great American Experiment began to end.
