Great Job!
Are those actual Fonts or are they objects you had to create?

They started out as fonts. Then I converted them to curves so I could modify them to fit the original poster. Mostly Hobo...
I'm a bit of a font nerd. I try to pick out fonts by name... I find myself doing it with all kinds of advertising.

I do the same exact thing, so I guess I'm a font nerd too!
How cool is that!

My momma alway said "weird is, as weird does", I thought that was really weird at the time, kind of made me feel a little weird inside...

I don't know French, but I'm guessing it's something about the work of celebrated men (poets and composers?).

Okay, I just asked the MADman, who IS French, and he said it goes like this (more or less):
"COMING SOON
the very illustrious Company
of
BLACK CAT
with
it's FAMOUS DARK Pieces,
it's poets,
it's composers
with
Rudolphe Salis"

Nope. Pretty close.
Nothing about men, though, and the domesticity of women through opression, so forget I said anything...

You're right, of course. Those days were NOT the best of times for women at all. Women artists were NOT the norm and the few who existed never got the attention they deserved. For the worst of reasons, it's always been a man's world and for many men, it's been a RICH man's world.

I'm not really a hard-core femenista or anything. I really don't feel oppressed myself, personally. I give myself freedom, and I think everyone should do that.

I find I work well within the system, while remaining virtually invisible.
It IS our own responsibility to find freedom, isn't it?

... Like a ninja...
OOOooo, and it's nice that you used the word 'responsibility' in association with freedom. So many people are slaves to the system, all the while believing that they are rebelling against it, only because they refuse to take responsibility for themselves! Or the ones who need so much attention that they can't be invisible.

"So many people are slaves to the system, all the while believing that they are rebelling against it . . . "
Yes, these are the rebels without a clue.

I know quite a few of these (of the teenage variety, of course).

Heheh, at least teens have the excuse of inexperience, it's really sad when you encounter the adults without a clue.

Yes, I could mention a few of those, too...

As you already know - the U.S. was FULL of adults without a clue when Bush ran for his last term as President. I'm not so sure they've got a clue now, it's just that his stupidity was difficult for even the mentally fast-asleep to ignore.

Oh, and I see where you thought it was about men. I don't know French fluently, but men in french is 'hommes'; 'ombres' means shading. So the poster is probably refering to sketches or drawings. Or maybe the poetry and compositions would be in the shade...
Maybe they were done by women... or most probably OF women...

Yes, you correctly guessed that I drew a parallel between the Spanish "hombre," and "hommes."

ALL artists, poets and composers were men at the turn of the century and following...

Yes, and Emily Carr, and a few others who happened to make it. Unfortunately there weren't many, because a woman had fewer choices then. Unless she was completely bohemian, she could not marry, have children AND be an artist, or have ANY job outside the home for that matter. For that reason, there weren't many.

Yes, it's extremely unfortunate that women have been so oppressed for so long. I can't help but think how different the world would be had women been given equal (or even more) rights from the start.
Culture, tradition, politics and religion have all conspired to perpetuate the myth that men are superior, while not allowing people to take a more skeptical look at how well the world is working under male rule.
