Description The second in a series of public domain comic character redesigns: the PRESTO KID!

Introduced in Red Mask #51 in 1955 (Magazine Enterprises, publisher), the PRESTO KID was...

"Jeff Grant was a black smith but he also was the masked lawman known as The Presto Kid. He never used a gun instead relying on a wide selection of both prestidigitation and stage magic to capture criminals." (from [link] )

Two words: MAGIC COWBOY! How has this character not been revived today? Two things kids like: magic & cowboys. Combining them is instant fun for everyone!

Here's my attempt at an update. I changed the character a bit in that I have fashioned him as an actual wizard complete with wand, gigantic spell book and mystical tattoos fighting the good fight in fantastical version of the old west.

"Jeff Grant was a simple blacksmith's apprentice when his home on the range was devastated in a battle between dragon-borne bandits and the local sorcerer-sheriff. Taken in by the victorious magical lawman as his new apprentice/deputy, young Mr. Grant has been trained in the mystical arts, tattooed with the unspeakable symbols and taken an oath to use his knowledge in the pursuit of justice.

A retaliation strike by the leader of the dragon-bandits killed Jeff Grant's mentor and what little remained of his home town. Armed with his master's spell book and his trusty wand, Jeff Grant has adopted the name "The Presto Kid" and become a wandering wand-slinger fighting evil wherever it rears its ugly head. All the while, the Presto Kid hunts for the notorious Dragon Bandit gang and their king for his own personal revenge."

I am also very pleased with my bandit-centaur!

A bandit-centaur equals instant win, and Presto-Kid sounds as a righteous American answer to that British schoolboy! Why-o-why does not Marvel or DC not hire you to make your comics, instead of their usual crud?

That is an excellent question!

Interesting concept! I didn't know this character, but he should fit well in my comic universe. Have you developed your own too?

I have a random assortment of characters in my head that exist in various universes... though most are pretty independent. Many characters I create or reimagine exist as "one shots", though there are a few that I'd love to do more with, even if was only a series of comic covers showing their adventures

Hum... I'm now working for a micro comic-book company, maybe my boss would be interested in getting you to draw some comics with characters like Presto Kid. He'll be reviving Amazing Man and other Golden Age heroes. Perhaps he'll be interested in Presto Kid?

(we publish three Golden Age comic-book anthologies: superheroes, western and science-fiction)

Great discovery. I'd never heard of this guy.
But you're correct that the idea of a "Magic Cowboy" is instant fun!!

There are so many great characters in the public domain waiting to be tapped. I'll slowly work my way through a list I made.

Even with the recent revival, there are still many forgotten gems out there to be resurrected.

Can't wait to see who made your list.

Thanks... I need to sit down a focus on a single idea and at least do a one page comic. I'd love to do one in the style of DC's giant-sized "Wednesday Comics"!

Do IT!!! There are several of your public domain reworks that would be a great foundation of a quirky universe.
